I was invited to a 'Cash for Gold' party...

Now this sounds like "my kind of party"!!!! :thumbsup2

Well, if the chain is just sitting unused in your jewelry box, even if they tell you it's worth $25, that's still $25 in your pocket.

That's exactly it.

Could you do better if you took your jewelry to several gold buyers, got multiple bids, haggled, and then took the highest offer? Almost certainly!

Will I be doing that anytime in the near future? Doubtful...:rolleyes1

If that's the case with you, you might as well take them in and get cash rather then leaving them in your drawer gathering dust.

I saw the commercials on tv! Apparently they melt all the gold down to make other stuff.

Well, they tell you they 'make" other stuff but that other stuff is cash. Gold is hovering around $1000/oz right now and they are paying you MAYBE 1/10th of the value, they then turn around and sell it to someone else for a HUGE profit. Just an FYI. I would take to to someone more reputable personally.

But you really need to know someone in the gold biz to get that kind of $$ back on your gold. No pawn shop, home party, OR jewelry store is going to really give you what it is worth (obviously or they wouldn't make $$ either!).

Basically what is happening in the gold world is that there is only so much left. Really! They do take it, melt it down, and make it into something else. There are always going to be naysayers out there, but I've worked in a few jewelry stores and even I would have a hard time finding someone who knows someone I know to give me that kind of $$ for my gold! :confused3

Shop around, peruse your options. If you want to make some extra cash, sell it!

What happened was a serious gold heist. Because all of that gold was stolen, the price of gold sky rocketed. You can read about it here:

Hey, OP here. I actually had some sterling with me too. It was old junk so it was either the little bit of cash or the trash! The silver outweighed the gold by 15 grams and I was only paid $9!!!! It was absolute crap tho so I took the money. LOL. The "Gold Lady" told me before she even weighed it that the difference between silver and gold is enormous. However it was old 80's style tarnished stuff so it was destined for the landfill anyway.

I have been invited to so many of those in the past 9 months that I have nothing left to sell LOL....they are so common here.

I had a gold party at my house in the begining of December. Super easy and I made $830!! I was totally shocked because all I sold was scrap junk that I would've normally thrown away. My gold totaled over $650 and I also got a percentage of the party profits. Now I'm always looking for scrap gold to have another party. ;)

There was a story on the Today Show this morning about these places, maybe even this place in particular. Maybe they have the video online at their website? The piece did not show these places in a favorable light - saying you only get like 20% of the real value and that you're better off going to an individual shop than with one of these big companies...
