Following the advice of all you good people I have decided to follow a more structured eating plan and have chosen one based on fat units (no more than 8-10 a day). Looking in the fridge this morning at the pasta (non meat) and sauce (tomato) I had planned to serve up for supper I was HORRIFIED to see that the pasta contained 9g of fat (just over 2 units) and the sauce 14.5g (over 3 units) and that was per serving (which we find rather small anyway). Guess I'll be seeing what else I can find for dinner that hasn't got hidden fat.

Isn't it a shocker? I do the carbs count and sometimes I am in shock as to how many carbs certain things have  no wonders we are all on plans...they keep sneaking this stuff in on us

Good luck on healthier choices. You have taken the biggest step to being healthier :) :)

Does anybody watch Kathleen Daelamans on Cooking Thin on the Food Network? I just got that channel here and she has some pretty sensible ways of thinking about meals. She says dinner should be one lean protein, one all you can eat vegetable (like a green veggie) and ONE serving of another vegetable (I guess like 1/2cup corn or carrots) and OCCASIONALLY a starch!

I bet that way of thinking would fit into A LOT of our Plans!!!!!!:)

and ummm....no I'm not addicted to the Food Network, really, I have no interest in watching all those meals being made!

Surprise, surprise! ;)

Funny what kind of stuff shows up when you start reading labels! Good luck with your new way of eating! :) Not all fat is bad for you, but it certainly can't hurt to cut back or at least be more aware of how much you consume per day.

Good Luck on your new plan!! I know I was shocked when I realized just how many carbs I had been eating a day...It is amazing when you actually sit down and read the labels on stuff!! LOL

I think we've all been surprised by sticker shock! If you have the time- the best way for you to have that spahgetti is to make it all yourself! Homemade sauce is not going to have much if any fat in it and you can either get or make no yolk noodles. That yolk in the egg is where all that fat is coming from! Good luck in your eating plan!

Look at you, Sue, counting fat content! I'm so proud. :)

I just know we're going to see some good results from you soon!

It is amazing all the junk that is in package food. Reading labels is a real eye opener.

BTW, a low fat diet will work! While expecting DS19, I developed gallstones. Back then it was major surgery. A week in the hospital, then no lifting for 6weeks. With an infant, I put off surgery for a year eating low fat.

I wasn't dieting to lose weight (weighted 105), just trying to stay out of the hospital. :) Anyway, I lost 20 lbs. in a year without trying!

Good luck in your eating plan!

Sue I'm not sure where you come up with 9grams of fat per day at? I use fitday and for my height and weight I try to maintian a 30grams of fat or less per day, stay around 70 carbs or less, and for protein 30 grams. Now don't get me wrong i journal on fitday so every meal i would come look and see what i totalled at before having supper. I don't know what pasta you where having but mine is 1 gram i think now, for 2 oz. I think measuring and knowing your portions are the key as well as what you choose to eat. Fitday helped me so much in the beginning i maintained a 1000 or less per day. I did'nt include things like mustard, and crutons that sort of thing so as long as i totaled less than 1000 on fitday i compensated 200 for those things. And for snacks my rule is 1gram of fat or 100 calories. I have a new favortite whichis chocolate yogurt in a plain i cream cone which is 1.5 grms of fat. I love to have waffle pretels with salsa too! Which i don't snack that often but i have my sweet and salty always in stock so i don't eat no no's!lOL I wish you luck and i hope that 9 is the right number for you just wanted to share my plan with you. It has consistly dropped me an avg of better than 3 lbs per week with no plataus. Best Wishes

Processed food is the enemy of good health. American food companies load everything up with sugar, fat and salt. Almost every prepared sauce you see on the shelf will have corn syrup or another sweetener in it. Yuck!

I make pasta sauce this way: Saute one medium chopped onion in one teaspoon olive oil in nonstick pan. Add one 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes, then oregano, garlic and any other seasoning you like to taste. Simmer ten minutes or so. That's it! If I have peppers or zucchini, I saute them with the onions. Boca Italian Sausage is awesome in this sauce. Since the veggies add more bulk, you don't miss it when you cut the pasta serving in half.

Mangia!
