Disclaimer - I have to admit that I knew doing a whole trip report this time probably would not happen, as this was our first week long trip with our three year old, and I knew I wouldn't be able to properly take the necessary notes for a full trip report. However, I bought a notepad and had very good intentions of a good dining report. However, we ate at a lot of character buffets, and everything just happened so fast! So while I still feel like I can offer a decent review of our meals, the pictures aren't as frequent as I had hoped! However, I do still have some, and plan to share as much as I can!

So if you are still with me, here we go!

Who are we?

Me - My name is Melissa. I love traveling to the Disney Parks, and I am the planner of the group! I am 34 and work full time as an accountant by day, vacation planner (for us!) and mommy by night!

DH - He is Justin, also 34, works full time as an IT Analysist by day, and puts up with my planning by night. An awesome hands on daddy as well!

Anna - Our miracle baby, born at 27 weeks weighing 1 lb and 2 oz! I was so excited for this trip, as she loves all things Disney like her Momma!

Another of Anna, just cause I love it :)

IMG_4431.jpglargethumb.jpg

Justin and I made two adult trips prior to having our daughter. In 2011 we spent 1.5 days at the parks after DH's conference, so while that was her first official trip, I really consider this trip more of her first official visit. And it was so awesome to see Disney through her eyes!

First up –

Columbia Harbour House

We had not intended on going to any parks on our arrival day. The original plan was to eat dinner at our resort, swim, maybe take in the poolside movie, and get ready for our first big day the following morning. Until we boarded the plane, and Anna kept saying “I want to see Mickey” over and over. How do you tell a child for months that you are going to see Mickey, only to say “no, we aren’t seeing him today”. Instead, we opted to use our departure day tickets to go ahead and visit the Magic Kingdom for the evening.

On a Saturday.
During Extended Evening Hours
With no Fastpasses.

But it was truly fine! We opted to eat at Columbia Harbour House because we had had it before and really liked it, plus we knew it had plenty of seating and the park seemed very busy to us. Additionally, we were all craving something other than burgers. So, after seeing Mickey, we headed for the Liberty Square area. We were on the dining plan and would use a counter service credit for this meal.

The service was okay. They were pretty crowded and busy though, and it didn't take our order long to get ready, and it was all correct.

We found a table upstairs, and after a large group cleared out, it was very quiet and nice. Justin and I both had the chicken nugget and fish meal with slaw and fries. Neither of us likes slaw, but our three year old does, so she enjoyed that! We also had the chocolate cake for dessert, and diet cokes to drink. We both really enjoyed this meal; everything was hot and fresh. Anna had the kids chicken and fish meal, and we substituted applesauce for the grapes, and she had the yogurt and a milk with it. Now for our three year old, these meals were awesome, but I could see how they would not be suited for older children. She ate a little of everything, but she has a small appetite and didn’t eat all of anything. I didn’t realize I could substitute a cookie for a side; the sides we ordered her were perfect, but she also wanted dessert, and ended up with some of Justin’s cake (he doesn’t care much for chocolate anyway). The cake was, to me, traditional Disney cake, but it was a little too rich for any of us.

We had a Garden Grocer delivery for the week, so while our breakfasts in room weren’t very healthy (mostly honeybuns and rice krispie treats), they did tide us over until our next substantial meal.

Next Up -

Hollywood and Vine Disney Jr Lunch

Our first sit down meal was at the Hollywood and Vine Disney Jr Meal. We had an early lunch at 11:20, and arrived about 11:15, immediately following the Anna and Elsa opening parade. The line to get checked in was really long! Probably at least 10 families or more in front of us at the podium. We waited and once we got checked in, we took advantage of the complimentary water they had out front. This was the only restaurant that we ate at that offered this (that I saw). We waited approximately 10 minutes for our name to be called and we were seated to the left of the front door.

H&V was busy, but we really enjoyed the atmosphere here! Very fun for young kids, and our little girl LOVED the constant songs and character visits. What we quickly found frustrating about buffets was trying to get her a plate, get us a plate, dodge character meetings, and then of course the “Mommy I need to potty”. Not the restaurants fault at all; we just had to learn how to juggle it all better! (This was made apparent when I went to the buffet, Jake came along – my husband didn’t take a single picture, and Jake’s signature is on the “This Book Belongs To” page!)

We had Doc McStuffins, Sofia the First, Jake, and Handy Manny at our lunch. One nice thing about buffets is kids (and adults) have a variety of choices. Most of my daughters food actually came off the adult buffet (admittedly she eats the best of any of us). I do not have any pictures of our food, nor do I really have a list of what we did or did not like. I do recall really enjoying the BBQ Meatballs, and my husband enjoyed the chicken that had a ranch flavor to it. My daughter enjoyed the fresh fruit (cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew) and the corn the most. We bribed her to eat a few more bites with the promise of dessert, but the characters kept her pretty occupied so dessert mainly got skipped over.

I know some people say the food is average, and that you are paying for the characters. We honestly enjoyed the buffet though, and it was probably our favorite buffet we had during the week. The food was all hot and fresh, the lines were very manageable, and the characters were the icing on the cake. Though we know the least about Handy Manny, he was probably the best interaction from the meal. The seat next to Anna was empty, and he sat down and picked up a fork and acted like he would dive into her food. The characters kept moving at a good pace; we ended up having to wait for Doc McStuffins at the very end of our meal, but it was fine.

Would we return here? It will truly depend on if our daughter is still young enough to enjoy the Disney Jr Characters when we return to Disney. Based on this visit, we would!

Dinner that evening was at the ABC Commissary.

I know that the counter service options at Hollywood Studios are lackluster at best. We had eaten at the Backlot Express on previous visits and I wanted to attempt something different this trip. I had originally thought we would eat at our resort this evening, but we had fastpasses to the Frozen Sing A Long at 6, and by the time we got moving from our afternoon break, there was no time. The ABC Commissary menu looked promising on the outside, so we opted to try it.

The lines were fairly long, as it was a prime dinner time (6:30-6:45). Justin opted to go with the bacon cheeseburger, fries, diet coke, and the sugar free strawberry parfait. I had the grilled chicken sandwich with bacon and cheese, fries, diet coke, and the chocolate mousse. We opted to get Anna the Power Pack Lunch, as it seemed to suit her best from the kids meal selections.
We got our food, then decided to switch tables, as the original one we found was dirty, and we thought we spotted a cleaner one. In hindsight I think it was just wishful thinking. I took one bite of my sandwich and Anna announced she had to potty. So off we went. Came back to cold fries by this point and a sandwich with very little flavor. Then, somehow while I was getting the condiments, napkins, and straws, Anna managed to get my parfait in her possession; so no dessert for me. This was our least favorite meal of the week. The tables were dirty, the lighting was dim, and just overall not thrilled with the food. It did however serve it’s purpose, but it was at this meal that I decided to have a better plan for future quick service meals. I did not take any pictures here, sorry.

Cinderella's Royal Table

IMG_4025.JPGlargethumb.jpg

Our next meal was breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table! I won’t lie – I know I was looking forward to this more than Anna! We had a 10:20 breakfast scheduled and I didn’t realize the check in process was so tedious. I went to the counter at 10, but was told I had to come back at 10:10 to check in. Luckily we found a bench to sit and wait on. My little girl wore a Cinderella dress, and we had a cute bow to go with it, and as luck would have it, the bow got lost before we even got through the MK turnstiles that morning. So while we waited, I went to Castle Couture and found some Cinderella shoe clips (I think?) and put one of those in her hair. Again, it served the purpose.

The dress and bow, in our room before we lost the bow. Please ignore the background mess

IMG_4435%20-%20Version%202.jpgsmallthumb.jpg

After our official check in, we waited maybe 10 minutes to be called into the castle to get in line for our Cinderella photo. Our names were called for breakfast while in line, but we were told to stay and wait for our picture. I was so excited that Anna cooperated well for this picture!

IMG_4437.jpgsmallthumb.jpg

We were showed the red carpeted stairs to go up, and I was in awe of all of it.

IMG_4026.jpglargethumb.jpg

I was just so excited to finally eat in the castle! We were seated in a row across from the windows; for a brief moment I got excited that we were being led to a window seat ,but no such luck.

IMG_4032.JPGlargethumb.jpg

I still felt like we had a good table though; we were the fifth to see each princess after she was announced. This worked out well, as Anna’s patience is that of any other three year old – short! Anna really enjoyed coloring her menu too, which helped occupy the time short amount of time it took to get our breakfast danishes. I loved the Mickey shaped blueberry muffins! In fact, after seeing nobody else at my table was going to eat it, I ate the second one too!

IMG_4039.JPGlargethumb.jpg

I did not try the other pastries, but Justin and Anna seemed to enjoy them. We each had the traditional breakfast for our meal. I wish I had asked if they could sub sausage for the bacon on the kids meal, but otherwise it was all fine. I didn’t eat many potatoes, but I think I was too distracted with my surroundings and helping Anna get down to see princesses and getting the autograph book ready, to truly clean my plate. The food was fine, but to me this was definitely about the experience.

Here is a view of the traditional breakfast on the kids menu

IMG_4040.JPGlargethumb.jpg

On our visit, we saw Cinderella (downstairs), Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, and Jasmine. To me, Aurora was the best as far as interaction, followed closely by Jasmine. Of course, those are the two that Anna knew the least about. Her fav, Ariel, seemed a little odd to me. She was sufficient, but just kind of quirky or something? I don’t know how to describe it.

After a late breakfast, some rides & Characters, we took a break from Magic Kingdom and rested in our room at Coronado. We later opted for an early dinner at our resort counter service, Pepper Market, before heading back to Magic Kingdom.

Justin and I both wanted a pasta dish, and Anna was asleep when we ordered, so we chose for her :)

Justin had the broccoli chicken alfredo, breadstick, diet coke, and a giant peanut butter cookie for dessert. After the previous nights counter service at ABC, he found this to be very good and he cleaned his plate. He isn't much on sweets, and decided he did not want the cookie right then, so I was able to get a bag from the dessert counter so we could take it with us. Unfortunately it got squashed in the stroller basket that night and we never got to try it. It looked yummy though!

IMG_4440.jpglargethumb.jpg

I opted for the Penne Bolognese with breadstick (on the right) with an oreo delight type dessert (center). For Anna, I ordered the Macaroni and Cheese (left), grapes, and cookies. I wish I had asked if applesauce was an option in lieu of grapes, as I know Anna does not like grapes, but it just never occured to me until we were already checked out and sitting. She had milk with her meal.

IMG_4439.JPGlargethumb.jpg

I really enjoyed my pasta meal. Anna ate a bite or two of her macaroni and cheese, but wanted to try mine, and ended up eating quite a bit of mine instead. My dish was certainly big enough for us to share, and we still had some left. She ate most of one cookie, and we ended up tossing the grapes.

The breadsticks looked good, but didn't taste as good as they looked. Apparently we didn't seem to mind though, because we both ate them :)

This ended up being our only experience with the Pepper Market, and it was fine for us. We ate at a bit of an off time (4:30) and there was only one other family in the whole seating area. Anna enjoyed the big statue at the entrance of the restaurant :)

Tusker House Breakfast –

We were starting to drag by this point, and honestly I was kind of wishing we didn’t have this 9:15 breakfast to rush off to that morning. But alas, we did, so we went. We arrived at Animal Kingdom right at opening, so it was a little crowded trying to get through the gates. Once we made it to Tusker House, we were able to get checked in, and Justin took our stroller to park it. We had our character-less outdoor picture made, but it was certainly nothing to write home about, as Anna was not cooperative. I'm afraid we were all just exhausted at that point.

We waited maybe five minutes to be called; the waiting area outside was nice and quiet and not busy. We were led inside, and taken into the right hand side large room. In that room, we were led off to a little side room. It took our server a long time to come visit our table, and Anna was getting impatient. Finally we decided that I would go ahead and make her a plate, and Justin would give our server our drink orders when he came. I loved the buffet area here. With it being in its own room, it was nice and spacious and didn’t feel crowded at all. The market feel was very cool too! I got Anna a banana, donut holes, bacon, sausage, and a Mickey waffle. When I returned to the table, of course she announced she needed to go potty. So off we went, again on the complete opposite side of the restaurant. Luckily when we returned, our server had delivered our drink orders – Justin and I both had diet cokes, and Anna had milk again. Since our server had not seen Anna at the table, he brought her an adult size glass of milk, which of course got sloshed around. So we requested a kids cup the next time we saw him, and it was no problem. We were also served the infamous Tusker House juice, which Justin really liked. I thought it was good but I am just not a big juice drinker.

Now that Anna was settled with food, I made a quick trip back to the buffet for myself. I really really liked the ham at the carving station! So much that I ended up going back for another serving. I also had a couple of Mickey waffles, bacon, and sausage. I’m not sure what was wrong with it, but I didn’t care much for the sausage. And the bacon was the traditional limp bacon, but I ate it anyway. At this point Anna was squirming again so I went and made her a small plate of cottage cheese and melons, and that kept her occupied. On my second trip, for myself, I got more ham and I also had some donut holes and a chocolate croissant. I know donut holes are everywhere, but these were VERY fresh and very good. Justin had the same things as Anna and I, plus he tried the frittata and really liked it, and he also had eggs.

We were trying to figure out the character rotation, which characters were there that day, etc. This was by far our most chaotic buffet in terms of characters. Our server just seemed swamped, though he was friendly and attentive when he did visit our table. I don’t recall him telling us how the characters would come through, so we just had to watch and figure it out. We had Mickey, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy.

So I was kind of less than impressed with Tusker House, until our Magical Moment! When Mickey was coming around, he got to two tables before us and the music started up to dance. I *know* they know the routine, but in my mind I’m always skeptical that they will remember to come back to us when they are done! However, Mickey comes by, takes Anna by the hand, and took her to dance with him. They made 3-4 trips around our dining area, holding hands. SO MUCH FUN. She had a blast, we got it on video, and Justin and I might have been more excited than she was! I’ve read stories on here where this has happened to others, but honestly never thought it would happen to us. So any negative thoughts about Tusker House flew out the window at that moment!

After the dance, we waited on Daisy to come back, and that finished up our autographs, so we settled our bill (Dining credits) and made our way out into the park.

Pinocchio Village Haus

Tonight was our visit to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. I had studied out the MK Counter Services the night before, to try to find the best option to suit all of us. We had never tried PVH, and I had always been captivated by the windows that overlooked the It’s A Small World Ride. Plus, the menu was something other than burgers and chicken nuggets, which was a plus to us.

We arrived right around 5, and while others were eating, it was not packed or crowded. I think we had like one person ahead of us in our line. For Anna we ordered the kids pepperoni pizza with applesauce and yogurt, and a milk. Justin and I both got the meatball subs with fries and the chocolate gelato.
So by this point, Justin was like “Does this place have any good non chocolate desserts?”. He is not a big chocolate person (silly boy!) and while I know most menus do have another option, it’s not usually something that appeals to either of us. But on a side note, it didn’t matter because once Anna saw that he had “ice cream”, she claimed that as hers.

We got the last available table by a window overlooking the ride. It’s a Small World Turned out to be Anna’s favorite ride that week, so this was a fun counter service for us. Of course I took one bite of my sub and hear “Mommy I need to potty”. Of course you do! It never failed – even if we asked ahead of time. And of course here the bathrooms are outside, and again, clear on the other side of the restaurant.

We both thought our subs were good. They were very filling so the fries weren’t really necessary. I enjoyed the gelato but thought it was too rich to finish. Anna enjoyed waving to the IASW riders while she ate. She ate a few bites of her pizza and some yogurt. We ended up saving (and tossing!) the applesauce for later. By the time we left, the restaurant was really filling up!

I don't have any food pics from this meal, so I'll leave you with a few bits and pieces that I do have:

How about some Trick or Treating Candy:

Parade!

IMG_4208.jpglargethumb.jpg

We didn't put a lot of efforts into costumes. We just decided to go to MNSSHP about a week before our trip! So we put Anna in her Cinderella dress, which she is wearing for Halloween anyways.

Loved your daughter's magical moment at Tusker House. So sweet! We did Tusker House for breakfast last trip and enjoyed it.

Sunshine Seasons

Back in 2006, Justin and I had ate breakfast at Sunshine Seasons and really enjoyed it, but we had not been back since. The night before we had been up until midnight at the Halloween Party, and the week was already catching up with us, so we opted to sleep in a little on our Epcot Day. By the time we arrived at Epcot, it was around 10:30.

We decided to ride Spaceship earth, and then it was time to use our Soarin fastpasses. Anna was too short for Soarin, so we already knew we would have to alternate riding. We decided to have an early lunch because none of us had ate any breakfast and were starving. Anna and Justin would eat while I rode, and then I would get some food while Justin rode. It was better for Anna than just sitting in the Soarin waiting area.

Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of Anna and Justin’s food. He had the slow roasted pork chop and mashed potatoes for his entrée and for dessert he had the strawberry cheesecake. I believe he had…wait for it….a diet coke to drink (the only time he got something different was when the Minute Maid Lite was an option). Anna had the Pizza Panini with marinara sauce and for sides she had macaroni and cheese and a cookie. She also had milk with this meal (she is a huge fan of milk). I liked that the kids meals here had a large variety, and you could get hot side items or the standard cold side items.

It was still fairly early for lunch – around 11:15 – but the seating area was filling up. When I returned from riding Soarin, I went ahead and quickly grabbed my food so Justin could have a chance to ride before our fastpasses expired. I decided to have the Oak grilled rotisserie chicken (without the black bean sauce) and rice. For dessert I Had the key lime torte and a diet coke to drink. My meal was wonderful! By far my favorite counter service of the week. The chicken was very flavorful and tender.

IMG_4496.JPGlargethumb.jpg

IMG_4497.jpglargethumb.jpg

So when I returned to the table, Anna was covered in marinara sauce and Justin was frustrated. Apparently she didn’t love her Panini, but had instead decided to play in the sauce. It had since been removed from the table. I tried a bite of the Panini and it was okay – I kind of see why she didn’t like it though. She also did to him what she had done to me all week - she had to potty just after they sat down with their food. Good times!

Before Justin left for Soarin, he told me they had made a deal – if she ate all of her macaroni and cheese she could go see Chip and Dale. So while he was gone we worked on that and she successfully finished it. She also enjoyed my rice and had several bites of it. I was surprised when she declined the cookie; we took it with us but she never ended up eating it. When Justin returned from Soarin, and I finally had a chance to ask about his lunch, he said he loved it and it was by far his favorite counter service of the trip so far.

Rose and Crown

We knew we were doing a lot of character meals this trip for Anna, but we decided we wanted one sit down meal where we could get steak. In 2006 we had loved LeCellier, but since it is now two credits, and we had already given two for CRT, we decided to repeat a meal we had loved in 2008, which was Rose and Crown. This would be the only restaurant we had dined in before that we were repeating on this trip. Our ADR was at 5:25, and there was a line to check in here also. We had originally considered trying to check in around 5, but since it looked like there was a significant wait already, we walked round to Canada and let Anna watch the ducks for a few minutes instead.

IMG_4503.jpglargethumb.jpg

So we checked in around 5:15-5:20, with 3-4 people ahead of me in the line to check in. Justin and Anna parked the stroller near the building, and we opted to hang around that area for the shade until our pager went off. It took probably 15 minutes to be seated, maybe a few minutes longer. I admit I was disappointed when we were seated at the table closest to the pub area. It was very loud and noisy, and Anna had been kind of jumpy all week about loud noises, so I was scared as to how this might work out. Thankfully she didn’t seem to mind it, and she watched a cartoon on my phone while we waited for our waitress. On the bright side, we didn’t have to worry about her (or the phone!) being too loud, as we could barely hear anything.

For dinner Anna had the kids fish and chips. She loves fish and we don’t have it often at home, so this was a nice change for her. She had milk with her dinner. Justin and I both had the grilled new york strip steak and fried fish meal. (I didn’t realize until typing this report that we ordered the same things A LOT during this week!). This came with Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Anna enjoyed her fish, but wanted my green beans instead of her fries. Personally I like softer green beans instead of the more crispy version that Disney serves, so this was fine by me. I stole some of her fries which I thought were very good! Our fish and steak were both wonderful. Justin really enjoyed the mashed potatoes; I thought they were just okay. I tried the yorkshire pudding; I had asked the waitress what this was prior to the meal and she gave me a good lengthy explanation so I felt obligated to at least try it. I think I would like it plain, but with the red wine sauce, I didn't love it.

I was ready for dessert! Justin and I both had the sticky toffee pudding. YUM! I think this was by far Justin’s favorite dessert, as it was not chocolate.

IMG_4519.jpglargethumb.jpg

Anna had the English trifle. I don’t know if she didn’t like it, was just too distracted, or too full, but she more or less just played with this. The presentation was really pretty though!

IMG_4518.jpglargethumb.jpg

One nice thing here was that Anna drank all of her milk, and I don’t know if you normally get refills on milk or not. I asked our lovely waitress if we could pay for a second milk, and she refilled it for us for free. That was a nice touch.

Honestly I’m not sure we will return to Rose and Crown. We LOVE the food, that is not an issue whatsoever. Perhaps I should have made a table request, and if I come again, I definitely will. But it was just too loud for our family to really enjoy our time there. We probably should have said something immediately when we were seated, but we are not one to complain, so we just let it go.

Oh, and while we waited for our table, we saw a fun game of hopscotch :)

I am really enjoying your report! I appreciate all of your reviews as we are planning to eat and many of the places you have. Your daughter is adorable and it looks like you all had a blast! :)

Your daughter is adorable and my goodness what a good eater with a varied palette!!! My grandmunchkins are very picky and not as adventurous!!

I love your character photos, they're awesome!! Looking forward to more.

Thank you for all the kind words! It's fun to keep the magic alive by writing these up!

Be Our Guest Lunch

I was so excited to get to do this! I had been unable to get a dinner ADR, but with the help of disboards, was able to obtain a lunch fastpass. We had fast passed it for 12:50-1:20 and we arrived at exactly 12:50 because none of us had eaten much that morning and we were starving. We were let in immediately to go check in with the ladies in the little building next to the line, and then sent to the fastpass line (well, path, there was no line) and walked right in.

There was one family in front of us checking in. After that we were quickly given our rose; we had chosen to order ahead so we immediately found a table. We found a table right in front of the snowing glass in the ballroom! Anna and I sat while Justin went for drinks and silverware. It was so nice to be in such a cool room and be able to just wait for our lunch to arrive!
I think it was just seeing the snow, but it really helped us cool down from the heat of the parks.

This place is so beautiful! Justin and I each had the Croque Monsieur , which was very good. We are pretty basic eaters if you haven’t noticed already, so this suited our palette just fine. We had French fries with it and our usual drinks. I had the Master's cupcake and Justin had the strawberry cream cheese cupcake.

The sandwiches were VERY filling. They are made on dense grain bread and I could only eat half of mine before feeling stuffed. And of course I had to leave room for my cupcake! Which let me mention – was my FAVORITE dessert of the whole week. It was so moist and just the right flavor. Not overly rich but so good. Justin really enjoyed his non chocolate dessert as well! Anna shared with both of us, though I have to admit I wanted to be very stingy with mine!

Anna had the Chip's Delight - kids grilled cheese and tomato soup and a milk. When our food was originally dropped off (I can’t help but think those food delivery carts look like the carts that newborn babies are in when in the hospital nursery), they didn’t bring Anna’s milk. So I later had to ask someone for it, which was a little confusing since it’s like a sit down restaurant but you don’t have anyone specifically waiting on you. However the first lady I asked was very nice and brought it right to us.

I was a little disappointed that either the Beast does not visit at lunch, or he did not visit the day we were there, but other than that, our experience at BOG was a very good one! (Oh, and we didn’t have to potty until after we ate – another reason to sing BOG’s praises!)
