I want an ipad, should I settle for kindle fire?

I bought the Kindle Fire a month ago when they had the refurbs on sale at Amazon. Loved it from the moment I opened it up but the one advantage that the Kindle 3 has over it is the e-ink, which makes it better for reading outdoors.

Yesterday, the kids surprised me with an Ipad for Mother's Day. We had purchased one for my parents at Christmas and I have been doing Facetime with them on my iphone ever since (they live on the other side of the state). The kids wanted me to be able to see the grandparents on a bigger screen.

For reading, I think the Kindle has it over the Ipad. The Ipad is too heavy for me to hold with one hand. But the Ipad can take pictures, store more music and has a better internet browser than the Fire. You can store videos on the Fire, but not too many. It can only hold about 4 or 5 GB of data. Both devices have clouds where you can store additional data but the Fire requires a wi-fi connection to retrieve the data while you can retrieve your data via 3G if you have the more expensive Ipad.

Really, it's going to depend on how you want to use the device. If you want something that mimics a laptop in function, get the Ipad. If you just want something that you can Facebook, watch streaming video, retrieve email and read books, save your money and get the Fire.

I recently bought a Fire and love it! I would love to have an iPad, but don't feel I need it at this time. I have a laptop, Kindle Fire and iPhone, each serves its purpose. I use my Fire for everything! I spend a lot of time outside (unfenced yard with a dog, so i'm out there all the time) and wanted something I could easily use outside, this was perfect! I read a lot of reviews that the screen was hard to read outside. I have not had a problem with that. All I have to do is adjust the brightness and it's fine. You can also change the text/background color of books, that helps too. I use it a lot for internet surfing and playing games like Words with Friends and Draw Something. Another one of my favorite uses for it is watching Netflix in bed. I've got a cover that double as a stand which is nice when watching Netflix.

Not much discussion on the Nook. I have a Nook color. I love reading both books and magazines on it. I also browse the boards in a breeze! The apps are limited, don't get me wrong. If I am looking to write a 8 page school paper, I would rather do it on my PC anyways ;).

Plus, the NOOKS are Android based. Love Android :thumbsup2

Buy a Refurbished ipad2 from the Apple.com ... they just went down in price last week = $319.00 + tax ... if there are not any available when you check ... wait a few days and try again ... they will be in stock. :woohoo:

I was just coming to post exactly that... we got one of those HPTouch Pad in the fire sale and although it is nice we bought an ipad2 2 months later, there is nothing like it , we love it... I would not settle. I had bought a itouch referb from Apple over a year ago and it has been fine they give you the same warranty as a non referb so I would not worry and you can always get at Square trade warranty (cheaper than apple) and people have said they were great... :goodvibes

I have a Nook Tablet and it is perfect for my needs. I read alot on it plus do e-mail, FB and general searching on Internet with it. It's also nice to hand to the kids to play Angry Birds etc.. when we are in the car or waiting around etc. I like its smaller size as it fits easily into my purse but still has a nice size screen to read, browse etc....

I think I need to have both..lol! I have an iphone now and love it. It's small though and when i'm home i'd like to be able to use something bigger to play games and surf the net. Plus being able to hook up a keyboard to it would be great.
I also would love to have an ereader though. I looked at a kindle touch and it didn't seem to respond well to my touch. And i'm not sure I like the eink. I like the fire though. I'd love to have that for reading. And i'd bring that for travel too and leave the more expensive ipad at home.
That said, i'm considering getting the ipad 2 instead of the 3. Hope i'm not missing much.....

I don't understand people already entrenched in iOS getting a Kindle Fire. I have an iPad that I surf, watch movies, etc. and a Kindle Keyboard for reading. For me that is the best of both worlds. And I have an iPhone to use when I am out and about. If you heart is set on an iPad I would just save up the money for one.

There is no substitute for an iPad, it has the best app selection, easiest user interface, and tremendous battery life.

You can buy a refurbished iPad from Apple, it will come as good as new with a 1 yr warrenty for $319 16GB WiFi.

They come in and out of stock, be sure to check regularly store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad

If you want an iPad, you will not be happy with a Kindle Fire. I have an iPad2 and I love it. DH has a regular Kindle and I don't like it. I have the Kindle app on my iPad and love it. The iPad is so user friendly for the most part.

Go to a local Best Buy or Apple store and play with an iPad, then decide. I don't even have 3G service on my iPad. I am posting from it right now, as a matter of fact.

I have a Kindle Fire and I did not have any interest in getting an ipad.

I love using my Kindle to read books AND listen to music at the same time while on the treadmill - triple tasking!

I have a glare guard on mine - it cost around $4 for 2 of them on ebay. It really cuts back on the glare from the bright screen. And I have the background for books set to seipa(?) to make them easier to read.

I wanted mine primarily for books, but do have my music on it, and a few apps on it too.

i just got the Asus Transformer tablet yesterday for mother's day (thanks sis!) And I love it. I bought my DD16 the Kindle Fire for her birthday and I had initially wanted one until I realized you cannot use a micro SD card to add your own music, take pics, etc.... Yeah, very limited but good for her to start out with.

So looking over everything I compared the ipod 2 to other tablets and found the Transformer is lighter and has a faster processing speed than the ipad, I also love that if so desired it has a keyboard dock and it still has the 10.1" screen! I am a huge Android OS fan and there is a Kindle app for Android so separate Kindle is unnecessary! Loaded my videos and pics from Disney to show my mom and the image quality is unbelievable. Plays Netflix and YouTube without a hitch.

I know that "everyone" seems to love the Kindle Fire these days, but I'm not a fan. With so many choices available, it seems to embody all the negatives of each option:

It's not a great e-reader. It's heavier (which matters when you're holding it up for an hour at a time), and it has a glare on the screen so that you can't read it by the pool. If you want an e-reader, you can have a superior product for half the price -- and the battery'll last months rather than hours.

It's not a great tablet. It lacks the computing power and storage space of the Ipad. If you just want to surf the internet, you'll be fine, but if you want to store movies, etc. you'll be disappointed. If you want an Ipad, the Fire will disappoint.

What the Kindle Fire DOES offer is a low price. However, it makes me think of the old saying, The bitterness of low quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low cost is forgotten. I might consider the Fire for a teenager -- just because of the price. An adult who really wants a table, though, will tire of the Fire once the new's worn off.

As others have said, if you really want an iPad you will likely be disappointed with the Kindle Fire. I have a Kindle Keyboard and a new iPad and I love both. If something were to happen to either one, I would replace it. Personally, I don't think I would ever consider a Kindle Fire because it simply doesn't have the space I would need in an iPad replacement and it isn't as easy on the eyes as the e-ink of the normal Kindle. I know you weren't thrilled with the ink of the Kindle Touch. It's supposed to be the same as the other e-ink Kindles but for some reason I didn't think it looked as good as my Kindle Keyboard, so I would encourage you to look at other Kindles to be sure you don't like the e-ink. I have used the Kindle app on my iPad and it's great but I prefer to read on the e-ink screen of the Kindle. I think reading on the Kindle app for iPad would probably be comparable to reading on a Kindle Fire.

If you aren't going to be playing lots of games on the iPad and you don't care about having the highest possible resolution if you watch movies, I don't think you'd be missing too much with the iPad two instead of the new one. The faster processor makes a big difference with some of the more processor intensive games but otherwise the iPad 2 should be fine for casual games, surfing and the Kindle app.

I have an Ipad2 and Ipad3...just wanted to come and second the suggestion for getting a refurbished Ipad2 as the recommendation!!

While I love the improved camera on the ipad3, the thickness and the heat ar edefinitely negatives for me....

with the price of the refurb ipad2, you really cant go wrong! especially since you are already an iphone owner and can take advantage of the app sharing and the cloud etc...

I wouldn't get either, but that seems to be an unpopular opinion.

When I am on the go I can use my phone and when I am at home I can use my laptop. I just don't see the need or desire for a tablet. :confused3

That comparisson chart is wrong in many areas with regard to the new iPad. The very first areas I noticed were battery life, music playback and video.

I'm on the "get an ipad" team! My MIL offered to get me a Kindle Fire for Christmas, and who turns down an offer like that? I admit I did have higher expectations than I should have. But, I have found that their web browser really sucks, unless you just want to read web pages and never "click" on something or enter in type. Half the time, I have no idea if the link I'm trying to open is opening or if I'm sitting there like a doofus waiting for something to happen that isn't. Android Kindle apps suck. Sorry, but it's true. Take the Android Etsy app and the Apple Etsy app--night and day. The Kindle comes with apps on it that you can't really remove, and it keeps asking me to update or download them and I don't even want to OWN them (imdb, espn). I don't care for how it displays anything you might have done on your screen in the Carousel--when I'm looking at secret Disney stuff for my secret Disney planning, I have to be careful to delete it so no one else sees my history! However, it is good for watching Hulu while in bed sick! I was excited to view magazines on it, esp Martha Stewart, but I can only get Food and can't bookmark pages! That's ridiculous.
All in all, I still end up reading books on my kindle app for iphone instead of my actual Kindle.

Ooops, I was just going by the chart from this article.

I was more concerned with the multicores and proc. speed. That and the fact that my Transformer isnt going to overheat :goodvibes

Neither will most iPads. I don't have that issue and I have the new one. :goodvibes
