I tried hooking up my new printer

and either the USB cord is not good or according to the reference guide, it's because I also have a scanner attached - I can't have both a printer and scanner plugged into the computer at the same time?

More info is needed. What errors are displayed?

You could try un-installing the scanner and then let the printer self install. If it's happy, then try installing the scanner again.
