I touched something on Space Mountain

im 5'6 and i never put my hands up on space mountain. i tried this year, but i was so afraid of clipping something. the only ride i put my hands up for is thunder and everest.

I'm 6'1"-6'4" and space mountain always scares the mess outta me, just feels like the tracks are RIGHT ABOVE ME. So I almost always hunch down.

THIS!

I've seen it with the lights on as well. Looks like a giant pile of metal in the middle of the building. I will GLADLY keep my arms, legs, and head inside the vehicle at all times!;)

I seriously doubt that Disney would design a ride that would potentially decapitate someone.

No, I am pretty sure this really happened. I think I saw the guy just before the Halloween parade started.:scared1:

Sorry I didn't read all the pages but we rode SM only once while we were down there. First I am 4'11'' so I have no problem with it. My fiance is 6'2'' and I was worried he wouldn't have enough leg room. But during the ride I noticed the tracks seemed a little close then I got a little worried he might hit his head. He had no problem with the tracks and still has his head :woohoo: but he did have a problem with the leg space so we didn't ride it again :sad1: maybe next time we will be able to with him in a different seat.

Seems that there is more leg room in the back seat.

I am never riding SM again. It scared the crap out of me when I was eight and again when my teenage daughter dragged me on it. I didn't dare try to raise my hands. Oh and I love coasters, but not this one.

At least SM is not going very fast, I once slapped one of the 2x6's supporting the spiral tunnel on The Beast at Kings Island, my hand was numb for a couple hours after that!:headache:

You can in fact touch the bars depending on how tall you are / your arm span.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXyTPdOjWlo You'll notice how close some of the bars are, especially around 2:10.

Hey, thanks for the link! Based on the approximate point in the ride where it happened, I suspect that I touched the thing you can see at 1:43 in this video.

From now on, if I really feel like showing off (to nobody in the dark, LOL) then I'll keep my hands at about head level and will no longer try to reach for the chocolate chip cookie.

Still don't think you can actually touch the ride itself; it would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Hey I think that was me you talked to! Although I don't technically work at Space Mtn. I'm in the gift shop, but I was standing at the end of the ride writing down photo numbers for guests getting off the ride. I have no firsthand mechanical knowledge but I can't imagine Disney having a ride where there is any possibility of someone getting hurt, so I wasn't doubting your word, just trying to reassure you.
Actually, a few weeks ago they had a day where CMs could come in early before the park opened and ride Space with the lights on. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do it but I wish I had - then I would've known for sure!

Yup that was me. Nice to meet you!

I'm sure the people on the ride with you would really appreciate that... NOT!
Reminds me of the time on Spaceship Earth when someone thought it was smart to have her flashlight on the whole time to point to and explain all the scenes to her child. People in the cars around her were yelling at there to turn it off but she was oblivious to everyone else. the comments got louder and ruder as the ride ended. It was unbelievably rude of HER to do that and I noticed someone mentioning it to a CM who just shrugged as the culprit slinked away. PLEASE be courteous to the other guests on the attractions.

For sure if you try you can touch parts of the ride in a number of different places on the ride. And if you watch the video you will notice when you go under lower sections and get close to supports there is a flat "ceiling" instead of just support cross beams. This would have your figures slide across that flat surface instead of banging into a bar and breaking fingers.

Other then the 2 tunnels you really have to try hard to do it or really be stretching for the sky.

Honestly, when you see the ride with the lights on it's rather shocking how close the tracks are to each other (side to side and above/below).

I heard it's quite scary with the lights on due to how close the cars are going in opposite directions.

You absolutely (other than in the initial tunnel) cannot touch any track on Space Mountain unless you are literally freakishly proportioned.

All roller coasters go through testing called "envelope testing". Please see this: http://jalopnik.com/this-is-how-disney-knows-you-wont-get-dismembered-on-a-1714983560

You have (at least) 1.5 metres of clearance at all times (about 4 feet). So unless you've got gorilla arms you can stick up in the air at all times you're not going to loose any limbs/fingers.
