I thought characters only stayed at Disney owned areas

I had always though Disney characters could only be seen at Disney owned or licensed areas. Well I live in Maitland Florida (just a short drive from Orlando) and I read that our local Jewish Community Center is having Disney characters at its renovation grand opening. Hmmm...

Believe me, I know they go to places besides WDW. Obviously they can be seen at Disney owned/licensed places like Disney Cruise Line, Disney Stores, Disney On Ice, etc. But the Orlando JCC has nothing to do with Disney.

Not that I am upset about this. I'll be there celebrating the opening with them!

I think they go anywhere that people want to pay them enough money or whatever as long as they have gone through the proper channels and Disney has approved it.

Mickey & gang were in Chicago this Christmas in the Festival of Lights (I think that's what it was called - they were turning on the downtown lights).

Then again, are you sure it's the real Mickey? LOL! Although being in Florida, probably a good chance. I know our mall had a children's center court re-opening and on the sign was "Pooh and Tigger Too" - we just happened to be there and Pooh & Tigger were basically the hooded sweatsuit costumes, where you could see the face of the people.

I believe Disney (through DisneyHand, the charitable arm of the Company) is a contributor to Orlando JCC -- they've donated videos, books, games, supplies, etc. as well as volunteer hours.

Well ... it's not just about the money. It has to be an approved event and something that fits in well with the image of the company. The Nickelodeon and Nicktoons characters will pretty much go anywhere you pay them to go, though.

Yup, that's why I stated "Wherever Disney would like them to go". Wherever they go, whether it be Disney or non-Disney, it has to be sanctioned by Disney.

We tried to get Disney characters for our annual travel expo and were told no.
There were a whole bunch of licensing restrictions (?) but basicallyl we were flat out told NO! Although there is going to be a Home Builders show a couple blocks from where our expo is and they will have Buzz and Woody. Go figure. I'll have to stop by to see exactly what Buzz and Woody are like.
