Yavn's latest message on his blog is more or less a justified rant on how people all over the VMK fan sites and boards were calling him a "liar", "dumbo jerk", etc. Yavn very reasonably justifies the "boring" newsletter and explains in great detail why we uh... didn't get what we wanted in the last newsletter. I mean, I have no authority over anyone here obviously, but I think that those people who as he so well put it "bashed" Yavn should at least recognize Yavn's explaination and ask his almighty forgiveness :worship: :rotfl:. I think we need to keep in mind that this is a FREE game and Yavn doesn't have to give us anything new.. he can just leave VMK the way it is and just let people come in and out everyday... which would be extremely boring.

I have always considered the newsletter as something extra. I mean, considering it once didn't even exist.

I never got angry over "lacking" newsletters, ever...but I heard he said he would be mentioning something and then didn't lol...I guess people have a right to be upset. They also have the right to post what they want on public boards...but again, they have to remember they are public boards.

I am not taking any sides here lol. Just stating how I feel. If I had complained, I would be appologizing to Yavn lol...but then again, that is just me :rotfl:

For those that want to read the full version. OR just visit yavn.com

Well I must say it was a nice surprise getting into the office, checking the old mail pile and seeing that now I’m a “liar.“ Yup, I was called a liar! What have I done? Well aside from publishing a boring newsletter; I am herby accused of not talking about an Epcot Room and a new Park Quest!

Here are some of my favorite posts / messages / e-mails: “How could you do something so awful?”, “Yavn you have disrespected your fans”, or my favorite “Yavn you are a dumbo jerk.”

So why did I not reveal more details? Simple…it’s not quite time yet. Say that again?? Let me first share the 12 easy (but not so secret) steps to making and launching a park quest.

12 Easy Steps to making a Park Quest

  • Decide overall quest concept (location, subject, type of questions)
  • Research possible questions
  • Write more questions then will be needed
  • Test questions and select questions and alternates for final quest
  • Send questions and alternates to legal department for approval
  • Create quest sheet look and feel
  • Layout approved questions onto quest sheet
  • Send finalized quest sheet to printer
  • Review and approve quest sheet proofs
  • Print quest sheets
  • Ship quest sheets to parks
  • Deploy quest in park!
  • Now there are another 12 or so steps for the reward card as well but they are pretty close.

So imagine you’re ready to launch a new quest and had planned to have it start at the beginning of the year. Well it turns out that the attorneys, printing companies and creative people all go on vacation toward the end of the year, and not all at the same time! Not that it should be a surprise but many printing companies are very busy with holiday cards around the last few months of the year and suddenly there is a queue of projects that delayed until early January. Houston we have a delay! Now this not really that big of a deal except that I was expecting it earlier and hinted that more details would be available soon. So why not just give the info and say it’s coming soon? Well it turns out some people don’t see the “coming soon” part and head to the park looking for the new quest. So imagine the poor cast member trying to explain that the new quest is not ready yet but has no date for when it will be out. Sadly this happened some months ago and I was told by some stressed cast member to please don’t announce anything until it’s in the park or we have a firm date for launch.

Then does that pardon me from “lying” about the quest? Now I’m just on the hook for Epcot. And that is just a case of the quest not being ready yet. We got busy with testing and pushing the new build and had to hold back a bit. I’ll take full responsibility for delaying it. I figured it was more important to get New Orleans Square launched first.

Anyway, I think many of you miss the point of the newsletter. While I do like to write about new features, many times the content is for a specific reason. It may seem like a repeat for those who read it regularly, but after spending time with the game mods there are still several features that people are not sure about. The point of the column is not only to preview cool stuff, but to help with other issues and educate players. It was not a case of not having anything to say, it was more of a situation where I felt a need to offer the information again. The next time you see something that seems familiar, pass it on and help another player. Chances are they may not be as in the know or may have missed the previous edition of the newsletter.

So will the Yavn Bashing end? Nah, as long as I am here I’m sure someone will complain. But that’s ok, if you want to steer the ship you need to be there for the storms and all. Now if you want to see action send on some suggestions, they work much better then calling me names.

Yavn

CapELdano, I agree Yavn doesn't have to give us anything new but that would kind of take away the disney magic IMO.

We dont all owe him an apology. Only a small handful of complainers do.

Hmm.. your right.... if i could figure out how to change the title, i would.

EDIT: I changed the title.

well, one aspect of his newsletter is incorrect. He says "send suggestions" Well, I have sent suggestions to both VMK and Toontown and the letters I got back were something to the effect of "sorry, we do not take suggestions, we know everything already" (you can guess, it was not like that exactly, but it was the implied tone.)

/
I will not apologize because I did not say he was a liar but I still sit on my opinion that he failed to what he said he would say.
(I was really hoping for the Epcot guest room, for more read my comment on yavn.com)

But now knowing it is a quest is all the info i need for this week, glad I wont have to trade for it

Here's my opinion.
Disney fans complain. A lot. I know that I do my fair share. We want everything to be perfect. There are a lot of us "What Would Walt Do?" people. Myself included.
By starting the Newsletter, Yavn set himself up for the complaints. Don't get me wrong, I eagerly await the Newsletter every Monday. It rocks to get the inside scoop/hear about new things and upcoming things!! But before his Newsletter, he was sort of anonymous, known primarily by the hard-core die-hard VMK geeks. Now EVERYONE knows who Yavn is, we can say his title in VMK and everything. So he shouldn't be surprised that people send complaints/aggression/whatever his way.
It's not right, but I feel that it's inevitable.
Again, just my opinion.

I'm really sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, but I'm still disappointed by him not releasing what he said... I apologize, but in the near future he should definitely just post it when needed and maybe not give us an overview on what the next week is going to be about, then he doesn't have to worry about that.

Only comment to this is if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all... especially if you know it doesn't apply to you.

TikiKrissy-

You hit the nail on the head the only thing is some in the newsletter thread went farther than just complaining and stepped over the line to attacking. The DIS does not mind if members want to state their feelings on either side of the fence but we do require that our members conduct themselves in a respectful manner when posting.

While I agree he should not be surprised by people complaints( I have done my share) he and other members of his staff and members of the DIS should not be subjected to aggression (as you put it) here on the DIS.

I want to apologize to Yavn for missing the post on this board calling him a liar!and not removing it.We the moderators are only human and we do make mistakes and miss things from time to time(that is why we have a report button ;) )

For future reference:

Yavn is a member of this forum and as a member he deserves the same respect as other members that means that when you post a thread about him you can not attack him by calling him a liar or personally attack him or anyone in any way. If you disagree with him or any VMK staff you can post your feelings in a respectful thought out manner. IF you disagree with a DIS moderator either here or any other board on the DIS you can address your concerns with that moderator via personal PM. If you disagree with another DIS member you can either post your feelings respectfully or send that person a pm.

Even if he were not a member we here on the DIS have posting guidelines that we follow and if you can not follow them when posting you may be asked to find somewhere else to post.

Please review our guidelines you may find them here:

IMHO: I find that attacking without the whole story is very rude.

Just because he was UNABLE to follow through with his plans for the newsletter. Due to reasons beyond his own control.

Yes Yavn does works for Disney. And as an employee he MUST pass anything he writes through the legal dept. Because the legal dept said NO, does NOT make Yavn a "dumbo Jerk" It makes him a man that is doing his job.

It DOES NOT justify the total disrespect from those that wrote to Yavn.
Their comments could have been controlled.

All they had to do was ask Yavn why he could not do the newsletter the way he wanted. Instead they decided to attack Yavn.

I would hope they are grown up enough to at least write an apology to him.

I just want to say this. ( not directed at any one person but more or less VMk as a whole) Yavn does his best, which in my book is WAY to much. He gets things out in a desent amount of time, with a REALLY good reason if it takes longer. If you want new things every few days, take a look at Runescape. Not to flame Jagex or anything but they are constantly getting nuw things but dont look NEAR as impressive as VMk items do. Yavn is under no obbligation to do this and he does it out of the goodness of his heart.

I hate to say it - it is easier for people to complain than to be greatful for things. I know we see alot more negative posts here on this board then we do positive unfortunately.

I am greatful for the Newsletter, we never had one before. Do I sit there and wait for what he stated in previous newsletter to show up on VMK the following week, maybe I do, but I will not complain if it does not happen. It will happen when it happens. Things change for a reason. Again, I am not paying for this game. I enjoy this game and my friends. The friends that I have made are the best part of this game.

Now something to complain about - is when the weatherman gets the weather wrong. Then you should complain. ;)

I agree that some of the people posting on the Dis lately have been posting in anger and attacking VMK's staff. There seems to be a trend of recent that has spilled over from the attitudes within the game which has been ignored, until now. Not only has Yavn been attacked, but I recall seeing some pretty nasty posts about Phinny and Hula. It's yet another reason I post so seldom here. I realize there may be times when posts are misunderstood and tempers can flare, but that does not give anyone the right to respond in the same manner.

If and when I ever see a post that tends to step over the line, I do try to report the offensive post. I missed that particular post, as I stopped reading the thread, possibly because I knew where it was headed. Moderators can't be expected to catch them all, it's up to us as members of the Dis to try stopping personal attacks before they get out of hand.

To Yavn: I'm sorry for the posts some members here left for you to see. I, for one, do appreciate the newsletter and read every issue. It helps me to be a better Community Leader and player. Thank you and keep them coming!

I'm sorry Yavn for some of the other posts and emails fellow VMKers left you. You didn't deserve them.

I didn't complain about Yavn not mentioning Epcot stuff, new in-park quest, etc.

Yavn, you work hard to get new items in VMK, so that we can enjoy them. Most of the time they have little to no bugs because you and the rest of the VMK team test these things until your fingers fall off from clicking so much. :) If they do have some bugs, you and the VMK team work hard on getting them squashed.

I have enjoyed the new land, the pass, and the tickets, etc.

Thanks VMK team(HOSTS_, VMK_, QA_, Yavn, testers, etc.) for everything you do to make VMK a safe place for all of us players.

Actually it has never been ignored here on the DIS Lori and I both have posted before asking members not to do it, post have been deleted and warning issues.

Okay, I haven't seen nearly the exent of what some of you are talking about. I agree that there is a line that shouldn't be crossed.

I read Mal's post and considering I have not seen some of these nasty posts, I am thanking our mods for doing a great job of keeping the DIS decently friendly. I don't want to read posts bashing someone so harshly.

Sorry, Mal. I meant in general, not as far as moderators. I think some of us have been ignoring the 'bad' posts or even adding fuel to the fire, rather than reporting them.

Lion

Um, yeah, Lion? I'll comment if I feel like commenting. But thanks for the suggestion. Apparently, Cap took my comment to heart, too, and revised the title of this thread. Not that I disagreed with the overall message of the original post. It is true that there were a lot of grumpy immature comments that ripped Yavn for the perceived failure on his part to carry out their expectations on time. I, for one, think that VMK is a pretty good game, given that it costs only what we choose to pay for it (in terms of additional Disney spending and Disney enthusiasm).
