We just got the pre tsa at the airport. Things were pretty easy
I thought that you coukd get global at the same time
But talking to the agent that helped us he said that’s a whole another app and screening
He did say you get the same benefits with global as with pre
so now Im wondering if we would have been better off just waiting and get things started with global
on the other hand we only go internationally every other year so maybe not such an issue

Seems like you didn't mess anything up.

About 6 months out from your next international trip you can apply got Global. Or right now if you want.

where I think I messed up was when the agent said that you get the same benefits with global as you do with pre
so I was thinking that since i didnt do them at the same time now Im paying for the same thing twice
I thought that for pre it was 80$ which is what we paid but 100$ for global so basically 180$ for both programs
but I thought I read somewhere that it was 15$ to add global

thanks for the reply

thanks thats what I was afraid of

so we really should have applied for global and then we would have gotten pre with it
now since we already have pre when we go for global that will include pre which we already have
do you know how much it is to add global when you already have pre
or are there 2 different prices one the 80$ price and the no matter if you already have that its still another fee for global

We paid $100 each for Global entry, not sure if you can get a discounted price if you already have TSA Precheck but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Not that I would ever advise getting a new credit card for this reason alone, but if you were going to anyway there are a few that will cover global entry as part of their benefits.

It's a completely different agency that does Global Entry and TSA Pre-Check though they are both Trusted Traveler Programs under Department of Homeland Security. Customs and Border Protection do Global Entry. While both TSA Pre-check and Global Entry have background checks ,for obvious reasons the Global Entry can have more they are looking at/for and the interview may actually be more of an interview depending on the individual rather than just getting the fingerprints and photo. Mine (Global Entry) only lasted less than 5 minutes but they did ask if I had any upcoming international travel plans and if so where to which I did the following year (but it had already been booked).

You will pay $100 for Global Entry regardless of your Precheck status.
Depending on when you're flying and want Precheck for, and when you're planning on flying international, you may have done the right thing anyway. In order to get Global Entry, you have to fill out the GE application, then when they get around to it and give you conditional approval, you have to find an interview appointment, that are held at a lot fewer places than Precheck, and can be booked for months out. In my case, it took 13 months to get conditional approval, then another month to get an appointment I had to drive 5 hours to get to, have the 5 minute interview and drive 5 hours home. Meanwhile, my Precheck expired while I was waiting and if I had to fly somewhere I wouldn't have had it.

Please explain Why one needs TSA Clearnce ?

Why does one seek Global Entry ?
TSA PreCheck has several advantages, including different (usually shorter) lines at security, not having to remove electronics from luggage, not having to remove the 3-1-1 bag (liquids must still meet those requirements), and not having to remove shoes, belts, or jackets.

In hindsight, do you think it was worth it? Considering you spent 10 hours driving to be able to save some time at the airport.

13 months? We got conditional approval within one week! But we were already traveling internationally when the email came in so didn’t do the interview at the airport we returned from since we got in too late and they were closed.

Fortunately when it came time to schedule the interview, we were actually able to get one set up two weeks after we returned because they were having special events at various locations. So got the whole family set up within those two weeks (not enough appointments available at one day)

I had other reasons for wanting it. My job, both my day job and my side gigs, have the potential to send me international. I wanted a RealID that I can carry with me while travelling. I keep a second small wallet in my backpack with an ID, two credit cards and some cash. Enough to get me on a plane and home from wherever I happen to be if something happens. While technically my Tribal ID is supposed to work to get on a plane, I don't trust TSA to actually know that or abide by it. The city where I had my interview is also where I grew up and where my mother lives, so I took the kids with me and they got to spend some time with Grandma.
To me it was worth it, but each person has to make that determination for themselves. Now that I have it, any renewals should be able to be done online. Another thing to consider is that I didn't have to pay for any of the application fees. I have multiple credit cards with the credit.

It was 371 days from initial application to conditional approval and 406 from initial application to status being granted. My results are not typical but not wildly outside the norm either. There is only one GE enrollment center in my state and it's 90 minutes away. Initial plan was to zip down there once I had my conditional approval, but because it took so long to get I didn't want to be without Precheck for any of my summer flying so I drove.

Just an FYI - this is not always the case - but mostly true.

I've been told to remove my belt. I've been asked to put my jacket through the xray. I've been asked to remove boots that had steel toes. (I usually would not wear those boots but had to in this situation)

So I tend to put everything in my bag possible before going through just to not slow things down for everyone else - i also want to keep up with my bag.

If you have the time and the option its always better to get Global Entry IMO - especially if your CC pays for it.
The biggest issue IMO is it can take longer to get an appointment - if you can even get one.
I guess if you don't have a passport that might be an issue - IDK - but lots of folks in the US don't have passports.

We had to renew recently and for two of us it was not an issue. One of use got a conditional and had to set up an appointment - but there were no appointments. You can deal with it on entry back to the country - but not my favorite option. Interestingly after about 2 months of not being able to get the appointment they just approved it out of the blue.

Also - just ahead up - the price will be increasing to $120 October 1st.

DW & I took a trip to the DR last year. When returning, we went through Atlanta. I had already downloaded the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app. https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/mobile-passport-control. I can't remember if I filled it out while we were flying or while taxiing. When we got to passport control, there was one line for those with MPC, and another line for those without.

We of course got in the MPC line, which was MUCH shorter and probably saved us 45 minutes to an hour.

Not sure how/where global would really make a difference. OP, since you say you only go international every other year or so, don't stress about it. Get your TSA precheck and just use it. Next international trip, get the MPC app and use it (it's free). You're worrying about something that is SO minor.
