I think I have my ammo to get DH to agree to adding on a 4th Disney day. Follow me here....told the kids I think we're going to fly to Disneyland instead of drive and all 3 of them said they'd rather drive. :faint: We are in Utah and if we drive with just bathroom and a lunch breaks, it takes about 10.5 hours.

Drive over fly? :upsidedow

Their reasons:

  • we like to wake up and start driving in the dark
  • we like to stretch out and have all of our stuff
  • we hate your airport anxiety
  • we like the good snacks you pack us
  • we like seeing all of the stops along the way
  • we like pulling up and seeing the Matterhorn and Disneyland signs
  • we like having our own car
  • just because

My responses:

  • we can take an early flight and leave the house when it's dark
  • they are right, squishy on the plane
  • right again, I hate flying
  • Uhhh, I'll pack airplane snacks too
  • Uhhh, again, we have to drive to Disneyland initially after our 4 non-Disney days. They'll see all the same stuff
  • no response. I won't be renting an Expedition
  • Got nothing

I guess I should be happy that they like spending that much time together and with us but not sure if I enjoy all that time. DH is all for flying.

I think I have my ammo to add an extra day. I'll tell DH we can talk them into flying if we tell them they'll get an extra Disneyland day. It's perfect. It's a bribe. I don't care. pirate: I get my 4th day and DH gets to fly. No one really cares what the kids want. :rotfl2:

Glad I'm not the only one who feels the need to talk her kids into things, rather than just telling them 'this is how it is'.:goodvibes

  It didn't even occur to me to do it any other way.

I text DH my idea. Waiting for a response. I'm sure the GCV won't have our size villa available so it means either the PPH or DLH but who wants to move rooms for one night?

We are going through the exact same process. We are also in BYU country (sorry rivalry week:)

We are leaning more towards flying. I love being able to fly in and go to Disneyland the same day! But we also enjoy the "journey" driving provides. When we do drive we usually stop in Vegas for the night. Lots of fun stuff to do there, and the kids love it.

Ute fan here. pirate: Should be a good game! I went once. It was crazy! I think I'm too old tailgate properly anymore.

We will most likely stop on the way home but not the drive there. We'll be leaving the day before Thanksgiving which leads to another reason I'd rather fly: traffic in and out of Vegas. It's terrible around Thanksgiving. Last year on the Sunday following Thanksgiving it took us over 8 hours to get from Vegas to Anaheim which is usually a 4 hour drive for us. :faint:

We went to DLR last year for DS's 6th birthday over UEA weekend. We had 3 park days and I definitely left wanting more! I would definitely push for the 4 days if I were you! We drove and stopped overnight in Las Vegas on the way there and had dinner at Serendipity 3 and then stopped in LV just for lunch on the way back. It was dh's birthday and he chose Serendipity again!

We had a trip to WDW all planned for this summer and we had to cancel it the day before we were to fly out because of my pregnancy complications and I SO wish we were going to Disneyland for DS's birthday again. Alas, I am stuck in Utah until this baby makes his arrival!

BTW, my dh went to the U for undergrad and the Y for grad, so we have some split loyalties going on here!

Ute fan here! Lol. Anyways we are flying this time from SLC To LGB. Yes it does cost more, getting to Anaheim in 1-3/4 hours is reason enough alone for us. We have a two year old son that can't even make it to the point of the mountain with screaming bloody murder!*

Also we have done the "drive thing" and it's ok but man it's a LONG drive. We have relatives that live in Vegas so we can stay for free. But usually on the way home the traffic is horrible always right before prim.*
Also there usually a long line at the agriculture station. Yuck!

So I did a lot of research on flying and which airport was best. LGB is cheapest from SLC and we like it much better than the craziness LAX has to offer. Perks, Smaller airport less stress, with children this is a bonus. Plus rental car agency is literally right out the front door!*

As far as pricing if you book your airfare around 90 days before departure it's usually the best price. For example we got our tickets on Jet Blue round trip for $149.00 total per person.(all fees included) I use Kayak to help find the best price, Kayak sure does all the leg work for you.*

Best wishes on your trip!

I always look at the fly vs. drive. SLC to LA is only a couple hours by plane, but with the time in the airport cut's the drive time in half. 5 vs 10. Just so everyone is clear where I stand.

Go UTES!

Both excellent schools! :goodvibes Good luck on the baby. I hope everything is ok. Have you been to WDW before? What's Serendipity?

Go Utes! I don't know if flying cost all that more. Here's my reasoning: With fuel, food, hotel on the way back, and the 5 $10 bags of beef jerky the kids insist on....it's really sixes especially with the price of gas for the Expedition. They don't want to be crammed in my Arura that gets terrific gas milage.

We always fly into LGB. I'm from the area and very familiar with it. Hate LAX and almost refuse unless I can get a screaming deal.

Currently I am getting the daily fare alerts from kayak. We have a $50 Jet Blue credit in my name, a $200 credit in DH's name for United/Continental, and a $100 credit for anyone on United/Continental.

Did I mention I hate flying. :headache:

Go Utes!!!! Are you in Utah? I agree 100% with this. After the airport hassle, we'd be halfway there. Notice the credits above? We don't have the smoothest time flying.

I don't hate flying. I really just hate the airport and all the stress that it causes me. Once I'm checked in and up in the air I'm good. It's the parking, security, finding the gate, getting checked in, seat assignment, checking bags, baggage claim stuff that stresses me out!

We have driven from here once. It was a loooong drive. We also did it the weekend after Thanksgiving. I couldn't agree more about the traffic nightmare. It took forever for us to get to LA from Vegas. Nightmare! We weren't prepared at all for it to take as long as it did.

I guess if I had to choose between airport and traffic nightmare I'd choose airport. My husband was not even close to pleasant by the time we got to DL after all the traffic and kids trapped in the van experience.

Hope you get your 4th day!

Another fan from Utah. We have driven to Anaheim at least once a year for the past 10 years. We leave early (around 4 or 5 in the morning) and we can be on our first ride by afternoon. We stop in St George for breakfast and gas and then just once more at the Costco in Victorville for gas and ice cream. We are usually in Disneyland riding rides by 3:30 or 4.

Thanks for the good thoughts. So far everything is ok with the baby. I have complete placenta previa and likely have placenta accreta which puts me at risk for major bleeding. The doc didn't want me on my feet for hours on end at WDW and then on a cruise ship far away from hospital care for 4 days, so we canceled. I've been to WDW 4 times, dh has been once with me, but this would have been the first trip for our kids. My 6 year old took it in stride and the 3 year old didn't really even know better. *I* took it the hardest, after all that planning, lol! I'll be 24 weeks on Monday and we're hoping to keep this baby put until 36 weeks and then deliver because it isn't safe for me to go into labor.

Serendipity 3 is a restaurant that is on the plaza in front of Caesar's on the Strip. It's a take off of a famous restaurant in NYC near Central Park. I grew up in Northern NJ, right across the river from NYC and we took the kids there a couple of summers ago while visiting my family and dh was hooked. They are famous for Frozen Hot Chocolate. The one in Vegas is much bigger than the one in NYC and has nachos that dh swears are the best food in Vegas.

We weighed all of the fly vs. drive options as well. My kids are great in the car and as skiingfast pointed out, it really only saves us about 5 hours total travel time to fly when you deal with the airport hassle. We didn't *have* to stop in Vegas on the way down, we just enjoy it. The kids did really well on the drive home, where we stopped only for lunch and gas. We didn't hit any of the Vegas to LA traffic, thankfully. We drove down on a Thursday night/Friday morning and drove home on Tuesday.

My opinions about driving may change once we add this baby to the mix, though!

:thanks: I hate all you mentioned and the flying. It terrifies me. I'll do it of course because I love to travel but if driving is an option, I'd do that.

:thumbsup2 We don't hit the parks the first day. We do the same though, leave when it's dark but generally grab some groceries, check-in, and then head to the beach for dinner.

:goodvibes I hope you get to go soon after the baby is born.

 Once I drove all 3 of my kids back alone. :faint: We decided to stay with my friend for another few days and DH had to get back to work. I drove 3 kids under 5. :crazy2:

We are driving from CO next week, so it will take us 2 days to get there. I like road trips- so much less stressful for me than plane trips, even though they are so much longer. We're looking forward to it!

This is just fitting for this thread.
Oh and how about that score.

Perhaps it's like saying you wanted to go to Disneyland, we're going to Six Flags.

Darn, firewalled from work! I'll have to check when I get home.

::yes:: ITA! My only concern is the weather and driving during that time. And the Thanksgiving traffic out of Vegas. :headache:
