This show is disturbing and doesn't even come close to portraying real Polygamist compounds and lives. HBO put this lovely spin on it and make it seem in some way ok when it is so not ok it's not even funny. It disturbs me that they are not portraying Polygamy the way it is in real life. It isn't all happy and roses! It is abuse, incest, rape and control. It is inbreeding and OLD men marrying girls as young as 9. These girls don't have any type of say in what happens to them and they certainly as wives are not equals as suggested by this show. I live in Utah and we hear about this all the time. There is nothing glamorous or exciting about it. My best friend's mother and her aunt were victims of Polygamy and trust me it is nothing like what this show portrays! I just hope that people who watch it realize that it is Hollywood hype and isn't a fair representation of real polygamist lives.

The "compound" families seemed pretty seedy to me. :confused3

Noooo, really? I am going to have to check this out right now! Thanks for the post.

Oh no doubt they are seedy but I don't think they come close to the real life seedy as I have heard from people who have escaped the polygamist lifestyle. I did call my friend who informed me her aunt and her mother were watching this series tonight and was told they would tell her if it was even close to reality or not. I just wish that they would have portrayed it from the beginning as something other than how they portrayed it with the women in the series seeming to have some kind of "control" over their lives. That is not the case with polygamist women and I wish they could portray that more. I do live in Utah and have heard and seen some of the first hand accounts by those who have escaped. It is nothing like this series even on the best day.

There are many types of television shows that take reality and make it enjoyable to watch. How many crimes are solved in 60-minute time slots in real life?

The shock value of a polygamist show, at all, to the majority of people, is something that is at least causing polygamy to be discussed. That's a start. I don't see them making the lifestyle look like the "beat-all, end-all" way to live.

If you watch the trailers that are on Demand, they mention that on the surface, Bill Paxton is living every man's fantasy... 3 women/wives in his life... until you see how tough it is on a man to have to deal with 3 wives and families at the same time.

They have shown, so far, that the wives are not equal. They have shown how they have to keep their "dirty little secret" to themselves. They can't have friends outside of the lifestyle. They have shown the whacko religious side of these people. They've shown that the elder has money but no one else does... and if they find some, he must get his share.

So far, I've seen no glamorization of that lifestyle being portrayed in this show... but, it is, in fact that... a show.

What are Daxx and I missing that you're seeing!?!? Do you think that men are saying"Yeah, I want a bunch of wives so I can get it all the time!"!?!? Or, do you think women out there are into a man that has to have a rotating schedule b/c of his other two wives? I think, given the option, most people would run from that situation!

While 3 women my be "every man's fantasy", I'm sure men are not thinking of the aspect of 3 women that they're MARRIED to!! It's one thing to fantasize about 3 women, it's another thing to marry and live w/those 3 women! I'm going to guess most men would go "Noooo!" Daxx said it's enough dealing w/me, more or less two more like me!!!!

I can't see how polygamy is being glamorized or portrayed as exciting. What's so glamorous or exciting about tolerating two other women, having to make a caledar for "your days", the whole "It's my morning, so why did you have a go w/her" pettiness. How is this glamorous or exciting? It seems tedious to me.

In all honesty, I find nothing remotely appealing about Bill Paxton and I think that Chloe Sevigny, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Ginnifer Goodwin must be amazing actresses b/c they act so ga-ga over him. I couldn't fake that w/him!!! Bleeech!

Also, you have to admit that Nickki was pretty disgusted to learn that the young girl was married to the "Prophet" (Harry Dean Stanton). So, even though she's a polygamist, she doesn't agree w/everything that goes on!!

Daxx I don't think it's anything that you are necessarily "missing" about the show it's just that not many people know the whole truth and the darkness associated with Polygamy. My best friend's mother was in a Polygamy family but she ran away in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on her back. She has since made a great life for herself. Incidentally her sister just ran away 3 years ago from the same family and talking to both of these women really give you a sense that the lifestyle is not like it is portrayed on this show. I realize it is a television show but there is nothing happy or good about most of polygamy. Sure there are sects that are nothing like what my friends mother and aunt went through but living IN Utah I hear stories about Polygamy in the news all year long.

My idea about this show is that they are Hollywood glamorizing it and there isn't anything glamorous about it. The typical polygamist family doesn't live in 3 tract homes with common yards, the husband doesn't drive a big suv, own a big business like walmart and they are not in great shape and educated. The typical polygamist family is living in a skuzzy house driving a beat up old minivan being held together by duct tape with women and children who are not educated and the women far from being thin or beautiful while living on welfare and state assistance. Unlike the HBO show they do NOT have credit cards or Pottery Barn catalogs that they can order from like Nikki. These women have nothing.

Children who are born in the compound are nameless and faceless as far as identity with the state. They don't have birth certificates or social security numbers. They aren't allowed outside their compounds ever, they have very limited or in most cases no outside healthcare thus resulting in deaths of young girls while giving birth.

The girls become surrogate mothers for their siblings until which time they are married off to a man usually much older than them and they don't usually know who they are marrying until their wedding day. Women should be angered at the way these women are being treated and yet because it is such a "secret" society most people have no clue of how bad Polygamy is.

Think of it much like the Afghanistan women who are covered head to toe, have no education, no say in their lives and are ruled by men and you have Polygamy. People are outraged in the world that Afghanistan is treating women this way and yet here they are in our country and instead of being angered about it people are watching this HBO film thinking that it isn't much different than a regular marriage with the exception of having more women to share their husband with.

For Polygamist men it has absolutely nothing to do with sex! It has everything to do about power and control. There is a book out that has 18 stories of women who have escaped polygamy and the stories are heartwrenching! It's called gods brothel and you can read about it here:
http://www.polygamyinfo.com/godsbrothelbook.htm

I just wanted more people to be aware that polygamy is far different from what HBO is showing and it is far more detrimental to women than has been portrayed "so far" in this show! I do hope they continue to make it more realistic to open people's eyes about it.

I feel very strongly about this as living in Utah I've had my share of friends who have suffered through polygamy, some that have died as a result of it and others that have been beaten by her "husband" for asking a question or trying to get an education. It just isn't all happy and bliss where the women have a say in any aspect of their lives.

This is my last post on this because it is so near to me that I don't think I can continue to post without a lot more hatred of polygamy in my posts. Feel free however to pm me if you'd like!
