I knew someone had to have died since the entire front of the car was completly smashed in and there were about 8 firefighters on top of it using the Jaws of Life. Sure enough, saw on the 10 O'Clock news, the driver was killed. :sad2:

So sad. I hear about these from Vince, after his shifts, if I ask him about the shift.

I was thinking how hard it must be for them to deal with this all the time. They said on the news the car was a Honda Civic - I knew it was very small. The other two cars involved were damaged, but intact.

That's sad. My DH is on a rescue squad and training to be an EMT. I hope that he can handle it psycologically when they lose someone.

So far his rides have been pretty uneventful--a kid with an earache (they offered transport to the hospital but it was really all they could do), standby at a huge structure fire (they just used the lights on their rig as extra lighting on scene and stayed out of the FD's way--no injuries except a bruised knee from falling on ice), and a bunch of responses to accidents with no "real" injuries. He's only been on one ride that ended in a hospital transport--a baby who had a seizure for no apparant reason and was completely responsive (not unresponsive) by the time they arrived at the ER.

You'd be surprised at the accidents like that, where they actually live. DH will call me when he's on a run to tell me it's a rollover and I always expect to hear that the person(s) died. 85% of the time, they live.

DH's firestation is right off of I-45 in Houston, and he picks up a lot of MVA's when he's on tour. Very rarely will he go into detail, but a few that he has told me about... ooooo, it's bad stuff.

A few accidents have stuck with him; it's the fires that will eat him up inside.

Totally OT--But your dog cracks me up!!!

Having grown up in a family & extended family involved in rescue, medicine & medical support, I can tell you it really does effect those folks. They have hearts as big as all outdoors & those brave hearts break~
:grouphug: Pea-N-Me so sorry that you had to see that it is so upsetting.

a few years ago DH & I were out on a lovely Sunday country drive, when we were waved diverted by a woman re-directing the few cars on the roadway. There had been a Daweo (spelling is wrong) with 4 young men that had thought they could make a light & ran smack into an F250. The little car was off in the drainage ditch, flattened, to the seats. We said a prayer, offered assistance, but there was already a trauma nurse(happened to be driving by) & an EMT (also, driving by) & rescue had been called. 2 of the young men died horrible deaths, The driver--18 yo--permanently blinded, the 4th was thrown & survived. No drugs or alcohol involved. It really was distressing. With a new driver in the house I don't even like to think of that day-

a big :grouphug: to all those fine folks who man our firetrucks, ambulances & healthcare facilities. Thank you, thank you~

Funny thing is that I am a longtime hospital nurse myself, even spent 3 years working in a Trauma Center ER.

But at that moment in time, I was just another commuter - one who, only minutes earlier, was aggravated I was stuck in traffic and wondering if DH had kept my dinner warmed. Reality smacked me right in the face when I saw that car, and once again I realized how unpredictable our lives truly are.

I agree, I admire the work of our rescue personnel myself. :firefight And I can say from my own experiences, some cases affect you deeply and most you never forget.

I commute 25 miles each way to work on the Dallas freeways, and I've passed a few fatality accidents. Accidents always snarl traffic, but it makes one feel lucky to be alive and waiting in traffic when you hear it's a fatality.

It's devastating to witness. Since becoming a commuter I have seen several accidents. One has really effected me because it could have been me had I left my house 2 minutes earlier. Instead it was a family- mom, 3 kids and the family dog, all gone. There are crosses in the place they died. Every morning at exactly 5:50, I remember them, that is when the truck from the other side of the interstate crossed over and hit them head on.

It is terrible to witness a fatal crash.

One day driving home on the Balto. beltway we were seconds behind a crash that ended with a car bursting into flames. We had to drive by, it was horrible to think that there was someone in that vehicle. I had my kids in the car and it really freaked them out. There were people responding to the crash.

once again to all the police officers, firemen/women, paramedics/ rescue crews/ dr's and nurses, who see and respond to these horrible things every day, THANK YOU!! you are all true hero's!!!

Pea-n-Me...i am so sorry you had to witness that. things like that make you hug those close to you a little harder doesn't it?
