Another disaster and another example of people using Text Messages to get out needed information -- Haiti.

Please learn how to send a text message. The situation in Haiti is again showing that Text messages will go through when the telephone lines are down and there is simply no telephone service.

You might not be in a earthquake zone, but you never know what kind of situation you will be in where you simply cannot make a cell phone call and/or you home telephone will not work.

Text Messages are proven to go through in these situations. Protect yourself and your family.

Depends on what kind of cell phone you have.
My dd has a national cell phone. She could text while we were out of the U.S. Mine didn't work at all till I was back in the U.S.

There is no cell phone service at the lake - I'm in a "dead zone" - and texting does not go through either.. Dson-in-law has texting from one company via his blackberry phone from his employer - and two friends that live at the lake year round (with texting from the other two competitors) are unable to send text messages either..

While I understand your concern, texting simply does not go through in "all" circumstances.. Hopefully that will change someday (I would love to be able to rely on a prepaid cell phone for emergencies only and get rid of my land line), but I think it's still a long way down the pike..:upsidedow

Why on earth would you assume that people who don't text can't?? It's hardly rocket science.

Because of the amount of people that have posted that they don't know how to text.

"Don't know" or just "aren't interested" and would rather communicate verbally? The majority of the posts I have read - including comments of my own - are that we're just not interested in it.. That's not quite the same as saying we wouldn't be "capable" of doing it if the need should arise..:)

While I agree everyone should know how to send out a text incase phone lines are down texting doesn't always work in emergency situations - I could not get any text out after Katrina. It took me a week to get any messages out to let my extended family know that we were all ok.

Get a grip....:surfweb:

I definitely wasn't trying to start anything. I was just saying that, in most cases (nothing is 100%), text messages go through when telephone calls will not (landline or cell). And, that everybody should at least know how to text, whether or not they choose to do so on a regular basis.

Granted, I understand people that prefer to NOT text on a regular basis. I was one of those people until our daughter went away to college. If we ever wanted to talk to her again, we needed to be able to text. She may not answer her cellphone, but she will write back "yes Mom" or "no Mom".
