you were awaken by the roosters crowing.......at the fort....:goodvibes

I was always awake before the roosters crowed. Brought them their morning coffee to get them going.

It was a 70's thing.... not sure when they plucked them out of the fort?:lmao:

I remember when the pressed pennies at the fort were the ones you left on the train tracks and the passing train would press them flat...:)

I remember when the peacocks woke you up.

Wait a minute, that just happened this morning. While I love having wild peacocks in our neighborhood, and their calls always remind me of Disney, I don't need to be reminded at 4 AM...lol.

As for the roosters, they are missed, but not as much as the peacocks :( At least in Fort Wilderness ;)

And I think BigDisneyDaddy is right, I noticed a severe decline in chicken population once the HDDR got busy (good oneeeeeeeeeee!)

P.S. As far as I remember, the roosters were there up until the 90's to mid 90's at least. They pretty much started to dissapear the same time all the animals at the petting farm started to dissapear.

Happydisnycamper brought me a flash back.....

I remember when the beach was more popular than the pool at the fort...

Wait.... there was no pool....:beach:

Sure do miss it...

I remember when Crockett Travern had great dinners which included steak, off course they still have a great bar. But there dinners use to be separate from Trails End. A little more costly but very enjoyable!

Here is one for the peacock lovers.

I remember when the peacocks woke you up.

Well, there must still be one around because we heard one last week. Wish we could have seen one though. We were in the back of the 300 loop up against the canal and saw a really big buck trotting down the other side of the canal one late afternoon.

...they didn't rent golf carts at the fort and it was nice! ;)

lol, bah! Our familes greatest memory is me driving the golf cart into a tree stump in the 70's as a 4 year old! Ok, it was the 70's! ;)

...you could drive the golf carts on the jogging path all the way to where you could see the Contemporary.

I wish they would allow the golf carts to go all over the Fort in those areas again, it was so nice :(

...they sold milk, doughnuts, etc. by cart throughout the loops :)

I think they could have used golf carts back then but they prolly needed the exercise...

I spend my early Disney years in a non-camping family but I just wanted to say that I LOVE this thread! It's fun to imagine what things were like "in the good old days". Thanks for sharing! (And for starting the thread tellnotails)

... the trams that take you to the parking lots at the parks were used at Fort Wilderness instead of busses. The open air rides back to your loop at the end of a long hot summer day were marvelous!

I went to the fort in 81 with my uncle and his family tent camping. I was miserable lol because it was hot and I seemed to stay sweaty the whole time. I've been going with DD for almost 3 years now and I don't have any 'remember when" memories yet but I do know that she has had a blast each time we go and she couldn't wait til we go again. So I guess I'm doing my remember when now. The memories like you all know are somehow magical and we just love the atmosphere. I hope when my daughter grows older and has a family she takes ol dad to the fort for old times sake lol:sad1: . I never thought when I bought my toy hauler to go 4 wheeling that we would find the fort and go there more than we do 4 wheeling now. I think anybody who has ever gone loves the fort.

I crack up when OP put pics from their childhood on here when they visited the fort. It just goes to show you that taking your kids camping and spending quality time with them goes a long way.
