I remember penny candy..

Does anyone else remember when penny candy cost just that- a penny? We used to get our dime and walk to Ron's Party Store where they had the penny candy behind the cash register. It was great if Ron was there, because you could take all day picking out your candy. But if his mean ole' mom was behind the register, you got what she gave you...boo...

Ben Franklin's was a good place for penny candy, and we also had a good sized "Penny Candy Store" that mom and dad would take us to occasionally. Talk about the good old days..How much does penny candy cost now, about a quarter?

What was your favorite? Mine was sour grape bubble gum balls.

This great and quaint store about 25 miles from me still has it, and for a penny to boot!! They also have food from all nations.

When my children were younger, they loved to get their baskets and shop!!

Wow, that's definitely worth the trip! We know of a couple of "old timey" candy stores, but they charge by the pound. And they charge A LOT!

you bet I remember the penny candies....we used to get a mixture at the store....all in a little brown paper sack...

remember the "flying saucers" with the little hard candies in the middle...the wax little pop bottles...wax lips...the little "dots" on the paper...red hot silver dollars?...

here's what else I remember....we used to pay for them with Silver half-dollars (Ben Franklin)...silver quarters (eagle on the back)...liberty dimes...buffal nickels...wheat pennies..

wish I had the coins now! ...

I can remember walking to 7eleven and getting penny candy! We'd buy the MUCH BIGGER Jolly Ranchers.. my favorite was apple. These weren't the little pieces they have now, but longer and flatter. We'd also buy pieces of Bazooka Gum, and those cinnamon toothpicks! Remember them? Oh, and who could forget POP ROCKS!

Oh yes, I was going to say the little "flying saucer" wafers with the little hard balls in between. And the dots on paper, you always ate some paper.

And I can still picture buying those cinnamon toothpicks..(they were a nickle.) Boy, I got my fiber back then, I used to chew them to a pulp...

And I DO remember paying for them with silver money-some of it from my dad's coin collection...

My folks owned a "Mom & Pop" grocery store (previously owned by my paternal grandparents) for several years when I was in elementary school. They had quite an assortment of penny candy, which I enjoyed most every chance I got.

I remember Necco candy and some kind of little packages that cost 1 cent for about 5 pieces of candy in it that came in chocolate, strawberry, and banana.

I'm only 35 but I remember penny candy, one place near us had it when I was in my teens. They didn't have a huge selection, but it was soooo good!

Of all the "olden days" things I tell my kids about (reel to reel movies instead of dvds; 33 rpm records; no pcs, no vcrs, no wireless phones & cells; Atari; AC/DC, Meatloaf, John Denver; etc) the thing that amazes them above all else and makes their eyes grow wide is the penny candy. That and gumball machines that took a penny and often gave you more than one piece of gum. They are just stunned. I may have to show them this thread so they'll know I haven't been making it all up, LOL!

there used to be a candy store on main street in my town called Smitty's and it had candy behind the counter for like a quarter...I LOVED IT!!
It was right behind my old house so i would walk down there and buy a bunch of candy

I remember when I was in grade school we walked from the school to a church nearby for brownies/girl scout meetings. We went past this little gas station that had penny candy inside. I still remember the name of this litte store...Etters. It's amazing the amount of penny candy they had and how much time it took making your mind up! I loved those little button things on the strip of paper! There were also sour apples and grapes (gum), fire balls, wax jugs filled with some kind of juice, pixie sticks, wax lips, pretzel sticks...and so much more. What a happy childhood memory!

Yup, I remember it too! I use to go to a corner store and they had a large case full of the stuff. My personal favorite was Root Beer Barrels.

This same store sold ice cream cones for 9 cents! and on Halloween they gave them away for free!

I really miss penny candy, we would walk to Dixons Market and they would give you a little brown sack and let you go behind he counter and pick out your own candy. Now my kids walk to the local C-Store and buy a fountain pop for .69. Thats the story they will love to tell their kids when they grow-up!!

We did the same thing..they tasted just like communion wafers, with a little extra "flavor", of course..

We round up pop bottles and turn them in for the deposit on them - 2 cents for regular bottles, 5 cents for the 1 quart or larger bottles. Then with the money we'd get a sack full of candy.
