Joh congratulations on giving up the fags! I do hope you can mamage to get another job soon. I am lucky I love my job though it has it's moments e.g, working nightshifts at the weekends and having to work at holiday time sometimes even Christmas day!!

Hi Joh

My job was a bit like yours - well paid but not much to do. In the end I had a word with Senior Management and told them that they were paying me to twiddle my thumbs and wouldn't it be better to give me some extra work.

Now I do some extra work directly for our accountant at head office and I'm busy again which I love. I even got a bonus which made me laugh as I was supposed to be doing the work as I was getting paid for doing sod all.

In September I'm looking at increasing from 3 days to 5 days with the 2 extra days working from home.

If you don't ask you'll never know

p.s. well done on the cigarette front. I was supposed to give up bicuits for lent and managed 12 hours -I was asleep! God knows what i'd be like if I ever tried nicotine!

i almost hesitate to saythis...i love my job its great fun i look after a lovely bunch of kids and its very rewarding

childcare isn't for everyone tho

I agree with Janet any chance you can be pro active and create more work for yourself.

I am one of those that love my job working for a local authority in the housing department and can walk to work as only a mile away.

Also never give up looking for jobs. I applied for the job I am in now three times before I got it! There was only one job in the council that I wanted. and was determined to get it. I only finally got it as a job share basis and kept my old job at a Housing Association on a part time basis and was doing two jobs until a year later when my job share partner left and I got it full time (that was 10 years ago). Just keep applying for those jobs no matter what.

Thanks for all the support and advice people. I got a phone call from my boss yesterday evening - basically, one of my colleagues had told him that I seemed a bit upset (understatement!) and he said we would discuss it today.

We had a long chat this morning, he has given me a few very small jobs for now (but better than nothing). However, the biggy is that he spoke to someone in another business area and she is currently trying to get union approval and funding for a new member of staff in her area (which is actually 1 grade higher than me). However, because of my Project Management experience and the fact that the job is putting together a new flexible resourcing project, she has agreed to speak with me to see if we could come to an arrangement whereby I could be seconded to her until such time as she is allowed to advertise the post (possibly 4 months). The advantage is that, if I was already doing the job, it may stand me in good stead for promotion if I chose to apply too

Anyway, I am meeting with her at 1:30 today so fingers crossed the job lives up to my boss' understanding of it and she thinks I would be suitable
