OH BOY. Please draw pictures, or at least type slowly...

What is the difference between "renting" and "transferring" points?

Isn't renting for $ prohibited? Or is that transferring for $ - and what is the difference?

What's the loophole? It seems like it'd be a lifesaver for people who just need a few more points, or people who have "spare" banked points at the end of the second year...

Please educate me - if you're willing!!

What is the difference between "renting" and "transferring" points?

Renting points is usually done by a member for a non member and sometimes by a member who needs more points. For a price per point, the member makes the reservation in the rentees name and the transaction is complete upon payment. The renter mails the reservation form to the rentee. Renting for $ is not prohibited.

When a transfer occurs, it is always between two members. Points go from one member's account to another member's account. Disney says that you are not supposed to do this for $, even though people do. It has been said that Disney says this so that they don't have to get involved in any disputes that may come up.

No loophole but transfering can help a member in need of a few points.

As "Cat" said, renting is not prohibited. In fact--when you stop and think about it--the biggest renter of points is DVC itself. If memory serves, DVC retains 2% ownership at all resorts, and may have additional points in inventory due to ROFR. Those points are used to allocate rooms to CRO for "rental" at Disney's Rack Rates.
