We wanted to move to iphones, but still had too much time left w/ our US Cellular contract--and we do love their service. So we had Dad take my line & I tried this out.
I bought an iphone 4 for about $250 from Cowboom.com, a division of Best Buy for used phones. I liked this as I could return w/in 30 days if any issues. I couldn't find a seller I was comfortable with on ebay & they were selling for closer to $500!
The iphone had to be originally activated by AT&T.
I then bought a SIM card from Straight Talk for $15. I now play $45/month for unlimited talk & text...supposedly data as well, but the word is really about 2GB/month without issues. This works fine for me--I don't download movies, the real data-zapper.
Fees are only a couple of dollars, so it was like $48/mo--you can save even more by paying for 3 mos. ($130), 6 mos. ($255) or 12 mos. ($495).
I have had the occasional dead spot issues (NEVER do w/ US Cellular), but they are few & far between.
I love my iphone & the price is RIGHT. (though it is true--sound quality on the phone is poor compared to other phones; no biggie)
One thing, I had to get a new number, as keeping your old one is such a pain in the rear it isn't worth it.
