I need to paint my whole house inside before I have a graduation party for my son. Does anybody have advice? I'm going to do this by myself.

I last painted a bathroom 20 years ago.

I'm looking for advice on what kind of brushes to use and what kind of paint. Flat? Shiney, or in between?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The last time I painted a wall indoors (less than a year or so ago) I used semi-gloss (my dad wanted it shinier) or I know I've used Satin as well for other rooms. But I stick to rollers and not paint brushes... I might have a 2" for edging, but I much prefer the big and small rollers for the work... I just like the texture of it better.

Should I use a different gloss for the bathrooms and the other areas of the house (living room, dining room)?

I am in the process of doing my whole house too.

I hav been using semi gloss because ofthe kids, Dutch Boy makes a dirt fighter paint that is just awesome!
They also make a special paint just for bathrooms and kitchens.

What kind of a look are you going for? They make a cool double roller now that makes the wall look sponged, of course there are sponge rollers too and rag rollers and just about any kind you could imagine....

Have fun! Let us know what you did!

I'm just looking for something that looks neat and clean. I'm not a big decorator, I just don't have the talent for that. I just know that my walls look like they have handprints and that somehow makes the house look not so clean, even though I feel like I'm cleaning all the time!

I'm a good painter, meaning that I pay attention to detail (no splatters on the sink and other things.) I'll never have a show house, but I want it to look neat and clean.

Binny, that looks fantastic! Want to come and visit me for a couple weeks?

I would suggest Eggshell, no flat. I just painted my house, the eggshell is wonderful.

You bet Jingle, your tag says youre in Wisconsin? Havent been there in ages! :)

I really do appreciate the advice!

Hey, it's Wisconsin! Maybe we should have a Dis Meet at Summerfest in Milwaukee this summer! Oops, I guess that changed the subject.

I like eggshell too.

Over the last 2 weeks I've painted 4 rooms in the house. 3 with rollers and 1 using a brush and colorwash technique. Only 2 rooms left to paint......

The bathrooms would need a different type of paint. I believe its an alkyd type of paint that you need due to the moisture. Latex paint is not recommended for bathrooms unless you covered it with a coat of something else to protect it..I forget what it is though.

I like eggshell, too.

Home Depot has some really good paint and you can pickup paint tip brochures there.

My DH and I have two different friends who are both professional painters, and they recommend nothing but Benjamin Moore paint. I will painting my house inside soon as well, as soon as renovations are finished. You can go to benjaminmoore. com and they have this thing where you can pick the paint color and see it on the wall of the room you are painting. They have kind of like generic rooms(bathroom, bedroom etc).

Last time we painted we used semi-gloss on all the walls, but in the kitchen and bathroom we used an oil-based paint for easy cleaning. I will say though that oil based paint is harder to apply, and smells!!!!It does wipe clean much more easily though, with regard to grease etc in the kitchen.

Definately go with a semi----gloss for easy cleanups. I have painted most of the interior of my house. Avoid white(except for trim). Eggshell is nice or a linen(just not plain white). Tape everything off first, move everything to the middle of the room and begin. I also like to use rollers because I think it is faster. I would look for tips at a home improvement store. I had my sons graduation party last year and re-did my dining/living area. We papered the top half of the walls and added a chair rail and painted the bottom of the wall. Made a huge difference in the room. Good luck!
