I Need to Lose Weight

I need to lose weight. I know going on a diet that limits my food choices, and "bans" certain foods will not work for me, since there is no way I can give up dairy and carbs.

I know what my problems are, actually, it's just one problem, snacking. If I work late, I snack, (usually on junk,) at work. If I don't eat at work, I'm starving by the time I come home, and need to eat then.

My mom and grandmother are always constantly harassing me about my weight also. I don't consider myself fat. Yes, I am a few pounds overweight, but I'm not huge. I am a size 16, which in my opinion is not that huge.

My mom is horrible though, everytime I eat something she has to say something. I mean I once ate a Lean Cuisine panini, and because I ate the whole sandwich, (which is one serving,) instead of just half, she said I was over-eating.

My grandmother is bribing me to go on a diet. I don't get my Christmas present (which she's been holding on to for the last month,) unless I drop a few sizes.

I eat kind of healthy, some days are better then others though. Like yesterday, I had an omelette for breakfast, then a Weight Watchers frozen meal for lunch, and a South Beach diet meal for dinner. I did have a few Doritos in the afternoon, but otherwise I was good all day.

Then I went to work, and while there, ate a whole bag of mini rice cakes, as well as a salad once I got home.

Today wasn't bad either. I had a Soy Joy bar for breakfast, and another Weight Watchers meal for lunch. I don't know what I'm having for dinner yet, maybe a big salad.

I'm also horrible with soda. It's basically all I drink, though I do drink diet 99% of the time, but I know that's not really good for me either with all the artifical sweetners and chemicals.

Like I said, I need help. Actually what I need more of is support, since I did take some nutrition classes in college, and I know when I eat something bad. And I'm not getting any support at all from my family.

good luck with what ever eating routine you choose.

For me, eating several times a day has really helped. I too work crazy hours and often was not eating for 9 or 10 hours at a time or waiting until I got home at 11 pm before I ate a huge meal and went to sleep. no although it takes a little planning, I pack a few good snacks in my bag and take them along with me or a meal like the weight watchers or lean cuisine meals for dinner if I know I'll be at work late. it really helps.

we're here if you need to vent or talk. Its hard when family is more critical of us than anything else.

good luck.

You should come join the Biggest Loosers 4 thread... I'm doing it and have gotten alot of support from the people on there!! Plus you get a buddy you can talk to!
good luck!

Hi! I just wanted to say how sorry I am that you are having such a hard time. Hopefully your family members will never be in the reverse situation and need to lose a little weight and be so overly criticized.

One thing I'm doing is keeping track of calories. It's amazing how little you can eat during the day and be over on calories. Even if I go over I just keep tracking. I learned that at Weight Watchers. I lost and kept off 25lbs doing WW and now I want to lose some more so I'm trying to just keep my calories lower.

Try to keep your mindset positive. Be healthy and weight loss will follow.

Good Luck!

Weight Watchers is a good plan... it really focuses on healthy eating habits. You can do the program online and the price is reasonable.

Good luck- I'd tell my Grandmother I didn't want her present but that's just me.

I would, but it's something I really really want, and I mentioned it last summer, since she never knows what to do for me for Christmas.

The one thread I use is the disappearing peeps thread. The people there are just great.

We have a new thread started. The other was too big I guess.

Come find us! All are welcomed!

Good luck to you. I hope you find the support you are looking for!

wow -- that isn't much!! hopefully you had at least another 700 calories this day? i have met with nutrionists before and always been told never go under 1200 calories a day, or you risk your metabolism going into the 'starvation mode' which is counterproductive. that is when your body thinks you are starving, literally starving, due to the low amount of calories consumed. so it slows down your metabolism in order to survive on lower calorie consumption.

anyhow -- i have been tracking my food on www.sparkpeople.com and i find it very helpful. this way i can plan my day, or keep track if i'm not having an organized day. i like to see the chart on the bottom of the webpage showing consisent days, it gives me a boost.

i'm sorry your family is not supportive -- but :welcome: to the WISH board where there are lots of friends and support for all!! do think about joining our Biggest Loser challenge, it's a great group and you are welcome to join in anytime! if not, there are lots of groups active around here, browse around and hopefully you'll find one specific to your needs! if not, start one up :teeth:

I had a salad for dinner after that, and some chips at work. Then I ate a doughnut, so I went over what I was aiming for as far as calories go.

Sorry if this sounds critical, but I haven't heard you mention much in the way of fruits and veggies. You never mentioned drinking water or milk. You may be eating reasonably low calories, but it still doesn't sound like a very healthy diet. If you aren't actually counting SOMETHING (calories, points, etc) then I don't think that you have any true idea of how much you are eating. For example, when you mentioned having an omelette for breakfast, how many eggs was it?? Cooked in oil or butter?? Cheese, meat or veggies in it? Your omelet could easily be half a days points/calories. You need to find a plan to learn about eating better. I recommend Weight Watchers, but there are certainly others out there.

Do you TRULY write down what you eat, or are you just guessing at the end of the day? It is very easy to forget a snack here or a few bites there. Even things like a quick cup of coffee, that can be easily forgotten, can have lots of calories, depending on the flavorings, cream, and sugar used.

Talk to some friends and look around here on the WISH board. You may find the perfect "system" to help you ! Good luck....................P

Hi there! We are around the same age (I'll be 27 this year :scared: lol) and I'm finally into size 14's.
I'm sorry that your mom and grandmom doesn't support you. I know that has to be hard when you're trying to be healthy.

I do second the sparkpeople.com. It's free, first of all, and it gives you meal plans if you need help with that or don't trust yourself to plan for yourself. There are message boards and articles and exercises too.
I really love it over there!

It sounds to me that you're not eating enough. Like another poster said, if you eat under 1200 calories, your body will hold on to everything, thinking it's going into starvation.
I personally think you need to eat more than just yogurt for Breakfast.. 100 calories isn't enough for the most important meal of the day!

Ok I'm going to stop now before I write a book! I just know how hard of a struggle it is and I have support... Everyone here and on sparkpeople will show nothing but support!

You are a much nicer person than me. If my mother or grandmother tried to pull any of that stuff with me they would have gotten the rough side of my tongue.

Someone recommended sparkpeople.com to you. I would recommend that you plan your meals out in that and stick to it. Also one other recommendation that I have is that you weigh and measure what you are eating. Sometimes what we think we are eating turns out not to be correct and we are actually eating more or less than we should.

One trick that works for snacking is when you're hungry drink a glass of water instead and wait a half hour. Sometimes when we think we're hungry we're actually thirsty.

You also might want to start an exercise program. It would help to tone you and make you feel better. Just toning your body can help shed a couple of clothes sizes.

Good Luck with your quest to be healthy.

Just another vote for Sparkpeople. It truly is a big help for me. One of the keys for me, as the poster above said, was measuring my food. Now I know exactly what I am eating. I tend to eat my breakfast and lunch as I desire. It's often similar things and I know "about" how it falls on the calorie charts. I enter those foods in sometime mid-day and then plan ahead for my dinner. I take what I know I'm fixing for dinner and calculate how much of it I can have.

Another feature of Sparkpeople that I like is the weight loss calculator. Plug in your starting weight, goal weight and whether you want to lose an average of 1 or 2 per week and it will calculate your calorie range. To start, I made it my goal to be in my range every day. After I was comfortable there, I made it my goal to hit the middle of my range and am now working on being in the lower part of my range. I also use the fitness tracking to help motivate myself to add more fitness work to my routing.

I am so sorry that your family is not more of a support to you. I have a grandmother who is somewhat similar. She has never bribed me in anyway, but definitely has comments frequently that she just doesn't realize are more of a hinderance than help. I know it's hard, but do your best to tune them out and do this for you! That is who is most important. Do it for your health, your happiness and your reasons. If you focus on that, I know that you will be successful! Best of luck.

Oh yeah, and I totally second and third the suggestions to join at least one of the support threads here. I joined the BL4 challenge this time around and am definitely seeing a difference in my commitment talking with others working towards similar goals.

Do you exercise?

You eat way too much processed and/or fatty foods.

Your diet should be based on whole grains, beans, veggies, and fruit with not more than 2-3 servings (generally 3 oz, although a serving of fish is a bit larger) of lean meat per day and no more than 2-3 servings of low-fat dairy per day.

Toss out the hot pockets, tacos and doritos and high-calorie dips. Bring a turkey sandwich on whole-grain bread and snack on fruit and veggies, plain or dipped in a low-fat dip or some hummus. :)

The last two days I went way off track, especially last night when my mom had a party, and I got some leftovers.

I have been eating healthier this week, and I lost a pound. Yesterday for lunch I had half a Kashi pizza, which is not as junky as regular pizza. It was made with flax seed crust, and the toppings were organic, plus it was loaded with fiber.
