I have 3 old hoppers with 7 unused days on each of them. 4 of us (DH, DD16, DD10 and I) are going down this summer and plan to do 3 days in the park. I could just buy myself a 3 day hopper, but is it more economical to buy a 7 day non-expiring so we all have the same number of days to use in the future? The problem is I don't really want to lay out the money now.

Using regular Disney prices (you can find some discounts):

3-day hopper is about $279
4-day hopper for next trip is about 286.50
7-day non-expiring hopper is about $413

It does save some money, particularly if you want hoppers for both trips (you have to pay 53.25 to hop, regardless of the number of days).

Ticket prices are approximate and include tax (taken from mousesavers.com, but I rounded the math when adding hoppers and no-expiration).

If you use the undercover tourist link from the mousesavers newsletter, you can save a bit more off the 7-day hopper.

Personally, I would get the least espensive ticket I could get away with. So, if your family is going to the parks for three hopping days, get a three day hopper.

I just don't see the value of "investing" in tickets with the MYW policies. You don't know what the future will bring, but you do know that your current financial situation makes it uncomfortable to lay out extra money.

But that's just me - I'm a bit of a tightwad.

We had the same dilemma for our trip in July. We've opted to purchase just what we need also. It came down to not wanting to put out the money now.

I think I'd purchase a 4-day non-expiring and add to it later when money was better...less i've got to spend later.

Magic Your Way tickets used more than 13 days ago may no longer be added to. Those without non-expiration and used more than 13 days ago may no longer be used, either.

A 4 day non-expiring is probably a bad choice. You would need to make up your mind about what you wanted to add during your upcoming 3 day vacation. And, you would need to do something as one leftover non-expiring day has limited usefulness, namely for another vacation with no more than 3 days.

A 7 day non-expiring is psychologically a good choice because it matches you to the rest of the family and induces you to plan your trip after this one accordingly. But, should your vacation after this one really be for 5 or more days, either nobody uses the remaining 4 days on his ticket, or you use up the old tickets and go to Universal or Sea World for the 5'th and succeeding days.

You can go with 3 days to start with, add a 4'th day while you are there and suddenly decide to stay longer, and before you go home, convert to 7 day non-expiring if you wish to.

This might actually work. If I buy a 3 day hopper which expires, I could add another 4 days and non-expiring before I leave. That would get me even days with the rest of my family and break up the expenditures into two parts (app. $270 now and another $200 in two months). Sounds like a plan.
