I need some Pixie dust please...

I have been looking forward to this vacation for sooo long. Then, my husband hurts his back(herniated disks.) He was healing really well. We will be in the park in a week. We thought he might need a wheelchair but then he was healing great. Today...he re-hurt it. Cancelling is out of the question. He doesn't want to ruin the trip for us. I love him for that. However, we will now need a wheelchair. I got that covered. It just puts a damper on things. Then today I found out the family we are going with got a comp upgrade from PPH standard to GCH suite! As happy as I am for them, it just adds to my sadness with our issues on this trip. I didn't mean to pour out a sob story here. Just want some Pixie dust please. Hopefully once I am there I will feel the magic.

I have lived this. My Husband had a herniated disk(s). He kept going until it ruptured, then he had no feeling in one leg. It (his right leg) just sort of drug along with him like a tripod. He had surgery, but did not get relief. Then a second surgery as disk material was left behind causing his loss of feeling and function. The second surgery worked. He still has daily pain, but re-gained most of the function of his leg. He has numbness on his right shin. Because of his surgery his vertebrae (sp?) are so challenged he could step off the curb wrong and end up in a wheel chair for life. Please don't take this lightly. This is potentially serious. Life changing. Absolutely sending pixie dust your way.

Thanks for the hugs and dust. I am worried about him. I am glad he has an appointment tomorrow with his nerologist. It was originally a follow up appointment already scheduled. He is young and this is taking its toll mentally and physically. He is active. I think the hard life of a hard working man caught up to him early. He lost muscle control in one calf that was just starting to come back. Oh boy..do I need the magic.

Sending you and your family get well wishes. I can totally relate, as I am going through back pain issues myself. (I had surgery in 2009) I had an MRI on Friday, and will be seeing a pain specialist this week. I've been on an LOA since the end of August and in PT.three times a week. Just remind your husband to take it easy, and not to push it too much. I know you will still have an amazing time.

I have two degenerated discs in my lower spine, and have had to use a wheelchair most of the time for the past 6 years. I still love Disneyland, and I still feel the magic. I miss getting to ride some of the rides I used to love (and I REALLY wish I could see the new Star Tours!), but it doesn't spoil my trip; I don't let it.

In the 18 years I have been married, my daughter has been diagnosed with autism, and we were told that she likely would not speak, nor ever graduate high school. Imagine my joy that this year, she will not only graduate high school a year an a half early, she is taking two college classes, including the hardest science course her college offers. She's 16. Looking forward to seeing her walking around Disneyland with her "Just Graduated" pin.

My husband has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and severe coronary artery disease, but he is still working at a great job with a great company.

We found out that my father and mother were drinking from horribly contaminated wells at Camp Lejeune while he was serving during Vietnam. I now have several, very serious ailments, including cancer, in addition to the injuries to my discs. But I am still alive; so many are not.

The sad fact of life is that you only have so much control over what happens to you, you can only control how you react. Love your family, and hug your husband, and reflect on the fact that you are in the happiest place on Earth. Then the pixie dust will come, and Tinker Bell will be you.

Give your husband a big hug, and tell him how much you love him. Then he'll be happy just to be with you. Have a wonderful trip.

We once received an upgrade to GCH a well but I told them I would not go without the rest of our party - we had 3 rooms booked. They upgraded us all. Wishing you an upgrade!!!

I totally understand how your husband is feeling. I had a ruptured disk that ended up going undetected for so long I now can not balance on my left leg. I have to hold on to a counter or place my hand on the wall for support. Nice thing is when I am walking it would take an expert to notice my weak left leg. It is numb but after 11 years I can fell a lillt bit so the nerves are rewireing down my leg. If he has not ruptured the spine the hernia may move back into the spine and wham he feels better right away -- fast like when the back statred hurting. Lots of rest--laying out will help lots. You hear the story of the person with a bad back that cann't move -- that was me -- I could crawl but could not stand or sit. I could lay flat though.

Try to be happy for your friends. I know you wish it were you . You are going to be happy with PPH hotel no matter what room. Even the regular rooms are quit large.

Have a good time. You can always have a re-do at a later date.

At the end of the day. It is just a room. Being at DL makes up for everything else.

I'm so sorry things are tough. I hope your DH isn't in any pain that can't be managed with meds (that would put a huge damper on enjoying DLR!). If you can, I'd recommend renting an ECV, as pushing an adult man in a wheelchair will be exhausting for you. DH initially refused the ECV last year on our trip despite already having hip surgery scheduled for shortly after our trip (don't worry, his surgeon said he couldn't make it worse by going to Disneyland!). But after I finally got him in an ECV, he kept saying how great it was to NOT be in pain and to actually enjoy watching our girls' eyes light up.

I hope you have a WONDERFUL trip that lifts your spirits!

I'd second that suggestion--I know there is a place at the Ramada Maingate that rents them by the week, and would probably be cheaper than at Disneyland.
