Hey! I could really use some input from you folks.

I am writing a book. It is a fantasy directed toward young adults (10 to 16 age range). One of the main characters is British. He is supposed to be 19 years old.

In one conversation, the female character thinks what he is telling her is insane. I want him to deny it. If he was from around here, I have him say something like "Crap, Dorsey. I'm not crazy!". I just don't know if that is way a kid that age would say it in the UK.

Anyone care to give me some input? Thanks!

Trying to really analyse how I talk now!

I think the "I'm not crazy" part is fine - I am sure we have all said at some point :rolleyes1 But we wouldnt use the word "crap" in a sentence like that. "Crap" is regarded as profanity in the U.K. What about Dorsey I'm not crazy?

Thank you! I had no idea that it was considered profanity there. It is used all the time here by everyone. It is these little things that have me concerned. I appreciate your input!

I think I would say mad instead of crazy - so something like "Hey, Dorsey, I'm not mad you know"

I hate to complicate matters but I also think a lot would depend on where in the UK the character is from.

Also depends on class! I was thinking, 'Dorsey, I'm not a nutter, you know!' or 'What do you think I am, mental?' Is it said jokingly or with angry conviction? 'crazy' makes me think of a jokey exchange.
