We just bought a new (to us) trailer but it is higher off the ground than our old trailer. It will be parked year round in a summer trailer park. We are moving our old deck into place, but since it is higher we now need to put a railing on the deck. This is an expense we had not budgeted for. We thought of lattice, but we have a wonderful view of the lake so we would rather not block the view. Can anyone suggest something affordable? Glass is far too expensive.

Try a Pinterest search for "inexpensive deck railing" or "clever deck railing". You'll find lots of ideas including metal tubing, fencing, wire, etc... One of them had a wood frame, but instead of spindles they hung old eight-pane glass windows, turned on it's side so you could see through it. Here's the picture.

There is a glass company near us that sells all kinds of windows. My Dad paid $50 for a large window that is approx. 30 x 72. That would be neat to incorporate on its side like the PP's picture.

Thick rope was the first thing I thought of.

I've seen folks use heavy gauge wire that doesn't disturb the view too much. I've seen it used both vertically and horizontally. I've also recently seen rebar used as spindles which was interesting. Whatever you decide to use, be SURE to okay it with your building code folks before you invest your time and money into it.........P

I would never use anything but safety glass for something like that. It looks nice, but just wait until a pet or person trips into it. Very dangerous.

Look for a Habitat ReSale store in your area - someone might have donated used railing material.

Aren't there rules about railings & such (for safety?)
