I am trying to plan a trip for the 2015 Christmas season. I mainly want to be able to enjoy the decorations at the parks and the special holiday ride overlays, Christmas fireworks/world of color would be nice to see too. If I can go any week from Nov - Jan, which week would you choose and why? I originally thought the week of 12/13 is when I would go, but now I'm wondering if another week would be better. We would likely go to the parks for either 3 or 4 days; Mon-Wed or Thur.

Thanks for your help!

I always pick December over November. Why are you second guessing your 12/13 date?

The reason I pick December (or, at least, from Thanksgiving on) is because DLR is in full holiday mode at that point (including gingerbread houses at the GCH hotel, Santa and carolers at all the hotels, holiday entertainment and music in Downtown Disney, etc.). The whole 9 yards. Sometimes, pre-Thanksgiving, certain things are not up and running yet. People may think that everything is in full holiday mode, but they may not realize that certain things are missing.

I would stick with the December dates. At this rate, we have no idea if the holiday fireworks and Christmas parade will be happening due to whatever is happening for the 60th anniversary, but there should be some sort of holiday World of Color going on (whether it's called Winter Dreams again or not will be anyone's guess).

Otherwise, if you don't care about holiday fun at the hotels, then maybe go during the week of 11/16 - 11/20. You'd miss Santa Claus and carolers at the hotels, and you might miss some of the gingerbread houses, but you'd probably see the 3 hotels' Christmas trees.

Well, I was originally picking the 12/13 dates because my son's finals would be over. He says he doesn't think he'll be able to go with us because of his job, so I'm not really tied to those dates anymore. I thought I better consider all options now. :)

it sounds like you really like going during that time frame! Thanks for your quick response to my questions! I think I'm starting to obsess over it!

You're welcome! While December is still my personal preference, you might hit a slightly less crowded (not by much) window of time after the Avengers marathon and before Thanksgiving (which would be the November dates I mentioned).

We get a lot of questions about holiday season dates, and I always maintain that I prefer December -- but there is no denying the fact that December is getting more crowded now. A lot of people prefer November, and they don't mind if they miss a few things.

Yes, you could say that I like going during the holidays! Disneyland during the holidays is a longstanding tradition for me. That's my main area of interest and expertise (for lack of a better word) here on the Disneyland forum of The DIS -- the holiday season (with Halloween Time in second place). That's why I have the Christmas/Holiday Season Superthread, and help people plan or figure out their holiday trips all year long (along with help from the wonderful participants of that thread).

Here is my advice from a fairly new- DIS'er- we went last year the second week of December, we are going this year most likely the same time as you- the second week of December. I recommend after Thanksgiving for the same reason- all the Christmas glory! However, I would stay away from the Thanksgiving break time (too busy) and of course any school break time in December (usually the week of Christmas through the first week of Jan). However, I might recommend the first week of December if you can swing it because last year on the second week of December a LOT of people took their vacations early- when I say a lot I mean on a Monday, a week before the school breaks should have started we were at the parks and the CMs were talking about the park possibly being close to capacity that day- the weekend before that Monday they weren't quite as busy, but close. This was NOT a special weekend/week for conventions or events, no candlelight procession, nothing- just a typical week, with school, but in holiday mode. Hopefully, if you could go a little earlier you could beat that crowd if it happens again (we don't have that option or we would too) and the less crowded the more enjoyable of course

We just booked the Dec. 13 week, so I guess that is what I would suggest.
Love all the decorations

Hello all! We are still debating which dates to do a 4 day trip during the time the parks are decorated for Christmas. We are no longer tied to my son's college break, so now I'm considering 11/30 - 12/4. What do you think about that week? My main goals for the week are somewhat lower crowds (haha!), Christmas decorations in the parks, and the holiday ride overlays. Any thoughts? Thanks again for all the help!

The parks should be in almost full holiday mode after Thanksgiving. F! might be only thing that is still on a weekend-only schedule, although we don't know what other changes will be coming to this holiday season because of the 60th. If you leave on Friday, 12/4, you'll most likely miss most of the Candlelight Processional crowds. Last year there are a few conventions and unofficial events that increased crowds on the weekends around that time, but the weekdays will probably be okay. My general experience is that December gets more crowded as it goes on, but the weekdays (Mon-Thu) of the first two weeks are generally okay.

Thank you for your reply! I am aiming to avoid the weekends! We would plan on only being in the parks possibly Monday night (depending on our flight time) and Tues, Wed and Thurs of that week. Unless we get a better flight out on Sunday, then it would be Sun night followed by Mon-Wed park days. Thanks for your insight, it really helps!

I think your dates are good! I don't know if the crowds will be substantially lower (I suppose we have to see how popular the new events of the 60th anniversary turn out to be), but if they are going to be lower at all while the holiday season is in full swing then that would be the time, as it is right after Thanksgiving break and before Christmas break.

I'm just clarifying/expanding on this so that no one (lurkers, etc.) gets the wrong idea if they are contemplating holiday trip dates based on when things are in full swing---

The 2 parks are usually in 'just about full' holiday mode when the holiday season officially starts (mid-November-ish), or with a couple of days after (for example, if Viva Navidad starts a day or two late -- even though it soft launched early last year). I'm not counting the late start of Frozen Fun -- which didn't begin until 12/20 -- because I don't know if that is technically going to be considered part of the holiday season going forward. I think it will be back -- and that it will probably start much earlier than 12/20 this time around -- but we'll see. I don't know if the Storybook Land Canal Boat ride will get tiny Christmas decorations again this year but if it does, they usually appear closer to Thanksgiving.

The rest of the Resort (the hotels and some things in Downtown Disney) begin to gradually get into full holiday mode after the season officially begins. Last year, the hotels' Christmas trees began appearing about 9 days after the holidays officially began. The GCH gingerbread house, as you remember, was being constructed the week before Thanksgiving (but not right when the season began), and I guess that the little area where the snacks and beverages were sold opened on Thanksgiving Day. The small gingerbread house in Storytellers Café was there on Thanksgiving (but not when the season began), but the gingerbread house in White Water Snacks appeared after Thanksgiving.

Santa Claus and the carolers begin appearing at the hotels on Thanksgiving. Santa is there through 12/24, and the carolers, I believe, are there through Christmas Day and then they leave -- though there could be exceptions if Christmas falls on a Friday or weekend day.

Olaf's Frozen Ice Rink and the Winter Village were open in DTD when the holiday season began right before the Avengers marathon weekend, but because they stayed open for a much longer period of time this time around I wonder if they will open quite as early in November. However, certain other decorations around DTD (in the assorted restaurants, etc.) did not appear until closer to Thanksgiving.

In any case, short of any new, pop-up events or special, unexpected things that Disney has in store for the 60th and/or for the holidays that could take place in December (for example, Elf Days was a pop-up, limited event that took place in December 2013 only), everything -- meaning all of Disneyland Resort -- should be in full holiday mode from Thanksgiving going forward.

To be clearer, I should have said that parks will be operating on almost full peak-season mode after Thanksgiving. Meaning fairly long operating hours (twelve plus hours), although it ramps up throughout December. Most entertainment (e.g., fireworks, WoC, etc.) was running nightly, but F! did not start running nightly until 12/12.
