I am going to a renaissance festival this weekend and it's PIRATE weekend! My mom and brother and I are going to dress up.

I don't want to spend a fortune and I don't want to buy a premade costume.

I am going to the mall and a costume store (for accessories).

Any ideas on what I can buy to kinda of piece this together myself? I may have a skirt I can use....

What shoes though?

I made my son a homemade pirate costume for Halloween without a pattern. I got red and white striped fabric from Walmart and stiched up some loose pants and then cut the bottom of them in a ragged design. You could make a skirt with the same type fabric and cut.

He wore a white tshirt and I made a vest out of black suedelike fabric. You could tie a head scarf on with scraps of the fabric.

For shoes, I would go to a thrift store or the Salvation Army store and see if they have those high-topped leather boots that were fairly popular back in the 80's.

Or big stompy boots, either one. :)

Too bad you don't live closer or I'd lend you the bodice from my pirate costume. I handmade the chemise, skirt and apron and got the bodice at a garage sale for a song. All I had to do was alter it slightly so it would fit properly (and I could breathe).

Lol yea too bad...I didn't know we were going Pirate weekend or I would have been more prepared.

Thanks though :)

We made ours for the pirate & princess party.

Husband and I both got white dress shirts a size or two too big. I cut off the collars and cuffs and sewed the edges under - made the sleeves about mid-forearm length. Then I had a few yards of some dark red silk so I cut strips about 7 or 8 inches wide and we wrapped those around our waists. I wore a pair of wide tan capris and my husband wore a pair of dark brown knits pants (from the Walmart ladies dept - he's such a trooper, lol). Did basically the same for my daughter but she had a pair of brown gaucho pants.

We looked better than the people in the store bought cheapo costumes and spent less money!

oh, and don't forget black eyeliner for everyone!:rotfl2:

Check around and see if your local dollar stores (or heck even WalMart) might have some big, gold-looking hoop earrings. I know one of our local HobbyLobby's already has Halloween stuff out, so check out the craft stores and see if you could pick up maybe a hat too. :)

Wow that sounds great!

Just wanted to add that our goodwill has TONS of vests. I used one from there last year for a piirate costume. Paired it with a couple of long skirts. A black *flowy* gauze like shirt. (The vest covered all the important parts and it was in the summer, so the gauzy fabric worked great!) I had ankle boots which I took off after a few mnutes cause the aprty was at my house. So technically I was a barefoot pirate. ;)
