I am invited to a relative's 80th birthday party this coming weekend. I haven't seen some of these family members for a long time, so it should be fun.

The birthday boy loves wine and cooking, according to the invite. He is my mom's first cousin. I am friendly with his two kids but not overtly so.

The invite says things like he's been marinating now for 80 years and alludes to his love of cooking, throwing parties, and wine.

The party is being held in a winery. (I'm getting a hotel room nearby and taking a taxi!) I love wine, too but I won't drink and drive.)

Usually, this part of the family is really great about these things. There is a group gift and this is no different. It is suggested I to write a one-page thing of a story I've had with the birthday boy if I so desire.

The thing is, I am NOT creative and I don't have a memory of him that is write-down-able. He's fun, he dances with his wife at every wedding, and has raised two great kids. That's all I got! But, that isn't a story that would come across well as it isn't a story.

So, I want to go along the route of a "marinating" theme.

What food gifts are wine related, marinated related that could go in a small gift basket? I'm not getting him wine, as his collection is vast and I couldn't hold a candle to it. (I know of his wine collection but didn't know of the joy of cooking.)

I'm thinking some hard cheeses (do they need to be refrigerated?), marinades, and maybe a few choices of stuffed olives (in jars!) that he can use in the kitchen? I know he has all of the wine gear he'd ever need.

Any ideas?

I think your food basket is a great idea. You could also put in some jars of sundried tomatoes in olive oil, jars of peppers, and maybe some fancy crackers too.

My mom still talks about the truffle oil my sil gave her. (she is in that same wine lover foodie category) I think some expensive small items might mean a lot. I wouldn't buy that myself but would love someone to give it to me.

Penzey's Spices - great selection. Cooks can always use fresh spices. They have things for marinades too - plus several gift packs.

Someone gave me a gift certificate from there years ago. I love buying their stuff.
