I need HELP! Trick-or-Treat...

This will be the first year that we live in an area that will have trick - or - treaters. I am not sure what I am going to do. I don't trust myself around candy....so maybe pencils ?

No kids ever got fat from eating candy once a year. I can see this argument if Halloween was every day but not due to one holiday.

Ugh, what a shame for the kids. And believe me kids know what they like. DS always threw most of the stuff he got because it was either cheap candy or little doodads that he had no use for. He really went mostly for the fun of going anyway.

Sorry if this is a tangent.

I agree no kid will get fat or become obese from one day a year. BUT seriously, do they eat all that in one day?

OP i like the drink ideas. And kids usually love anything that glows because its dark around 5pm east coast time.

Sheesh - just turn out the porch light.

I am wondering - what political/economic commentary is the OP trying to communicate by "voting with her dollars?"

Here's my stand - candy is one of the few things you can give out that is still made in America. Almost all of the other trinkets are manufactured in China. (As if kids cared one way or the other.)

And what's up with the potato/onion lady - does she ask for an ID or birth certificate to determine a kid's age? Talk about a Scrooge.

We love Halloween around here, with all the fun and costumes and yes, candy..... However, we live in a small rural town and my kids do their "trick or treating" at down town establishments on Halloween afternoon. The door-to-door thing is done in some of the bigger neighborhoods but not ours. We are lucky to get five kids a year, sometimes we get a big ol' goose egg. We usually buy candy, but I am really enjoying the ideas of Capri Suns or glow sticks. Maybe we'll mix things up this year!

I do, however, get to make up goody bags for the kids in the class where I am an ed assistant. I usually try to steer toward things that the kids can use right in class - pencils, erasers, stickers.....but I can't resist throwing one sweet treat in there. If one Tootsie Roll sucker is wrong, then I don't want to be right! :upsidedow

I could give boxes of raisins too maybe...

Is $0.25 a person (in dimes and nickles) a good idea? Or is that weird....?

I always throw out anything like a box of raisins that isn't sealed.

I vote for a mega-pack of something at Oriental Trading. Or McDonalds $1 gift certs-- always available around Christmas time.

I like to give out bouncy balls, squirt rings, mini playdough cans, tatoos, and those flinging frog things. I also have a bowl of candy and the kids get to choose one from each container.

I was thinking of maybe doing fortune cookies (if I can find some individually wrapped) to throw in with the candy this year.

So, you all know that hydrogenated oil is trans fat, right? If I had known what I know now about most all candy that is out there, I would NEVER have eaten it. You better believe that I won't be giving MY child this crap... 'just because it's Halloween'. Artificial colors?! Do you think that chewy candy is naturally blue or pink?? It's more than just fat and calories, people! :headache:

This is the OP, and THIS is what I mean by voting with my dollars. I simply will NOT support these companies that are putting all of this CRAP into our so-called food system. It's ridiculous. I hope I open the eyes of at least one Dis'er on here.

Stepping off soap box. Have a good evening. :goodvibes By the way, I'm loving all of these alternative ideas!!! Thanks everyone!! :yay:

Oh, by the way, if you haven't seen Food, Inc. you really should... it'll open your eyes.

And if you don't want to, don't. I'm not pushing anything on anyone.

Obviously there are different strokes for different folks. Thanks to everyone for offering ideas and opinions. Unfortunately, it appears that this thread is taking a negative turn and needs to be closed.

Happy Halloween, everyone!
