I need help from the board hairstylists please :-).

My daughter wants me to dye the tips of her hair purple. Her hair is a red/brown color and I need some guidance of what to do. I am assuming we need to bleach the ends before we color for the best results. The ends will cut off before school starts so I am not too worried about the damage. There have been too many unexpected expenses lately to do it at a salon, but I am ok with buying supplies and doing it at home if I can get some guidance. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
