I am a frustrated children's librarian trying to find this book! Patrons tell me it was written by a European author (probably UK), originally published by a small publisher, became a big hit in Britain/Europe, has since been re-issued by a larger publisher, the author was featured on the Today Show and the book is very Harry Potter like. Several patrons have requested that I purchase this book but I need a title, author or an ISBN. Help!!!

Well, this is sad, I've been trying to remember the same thing. I read an article in Entertainment Weekly a few weeks ago. The author was British and I believe he was a member of the clergy. Can I remember his name or the name of the book? Umm...no, I was trying to tell my daughter the other day and the whole thing went out of my mind. I'm not sure if this is the same book you're talking about, but I'm interested in seeing the replies.

The one I can think of is Artemis Fowl.

Artemis Fowl comes to mind, although I don't kno if the author is from Europe.

We have that title and the patrons say that isn't it. :( The problem is there are soooo many "Harry Potter like" titles nowdays.

Is this it? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4954605/

"Fantasy novel catches attention of 'Potter,' Tolkien fans
Action-packed fantasy, "Shadowmancer," by G.P. Taylor, set in the 1700s Yorkshire coast, is a best seller in the U.K. and poised to capture the imaginations of America's youth. "

The one that sued JK Rowling is titled Larry Potter. I don't think it became big though.

I'm guessing it was Lemony Snicket. :)

I just saw a trailer of a movie coming out in November based on the book. It stars Jim Carrey.

I haven't seen the trailer, but I saw a write up in EW. That hairdo!!!

LS is actually a series of books, just like HP, IIRC.

Oh, cool! Glad I was able to help :)

If they want other recommendations like Harry Potter, my DS loves the Pendragon series by MacHale. Alternate worlds, not magic but he loves it!

Artemis Fowl, The Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket), Eragon....are all very popular books at our library. And Harry Potter too of course! Don't forget to ask your children to sign up for the summer reading program at your local public library.

And girls (some boys too!) and enjoying the Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi which is about fantasy and magic. Pendragon is also popular here!
