I got a Beagle 2 wks ago and she is 8wks old. I have been crate training her but she still "goes" in her crate every night.(the crate is small-cat size). She has also been peeing on the floor no matter how much we take her out. When we take her out she seems to pee in at least 2-3 different spots. Could it be the food I'm feeding her(purina puppy chow)? I know she is young and it will take time. Just trying to figure out if I'm doing everything I should be doing.

With a puppy you need to be patient but stern. 8 weeks is probably a little young to ask them to be totally trained. It will take some time, but she/he will get it. They are very bright puppies. We had a beagle when I was growing up. A present from my grandfather who raised hunting dogs.

little bladders that have to go every two seconds.....see how often she does pee on the floor and take her/him out a few minutes earlier then you did before.....and listen to any signs of the whimpering...sometimes little puppies make a sort of mmmmm mm noise.....good luck and keep at it.....our dalmatian took a few weeks before she was going more often out side and sleeping longer at night....

I had a beagle several years ago and I agree that it's probably to early to be completely crate trained but to keep her from going potty in the crate....put blankets or sheets down that will only belong to her. Puppies don't like to soil their beds so that might help.

I don't think it is the food, she's still just a baby. (But they're so cute at that age that just about anything is forgivable..)

Our beagle was actually 6 weeks when we got him. (Young, yes, but his mother was really sick so the breeder gave him to us early.) Puppies have tiny, tiny bladders and they don't always speak very well at young ages. I would just make sure you take her out every couple of hours, maybe more often.

Is she peeing in the same spots? If so, I'd clean them with Nature's Miracle. That takes out smells even to a beagle nose, and worked very well with ours.

My beagle puppy always had a small bladder.......I took her out every hour the first week and then slowly weaned her to 2 hours and then moved to three....but in the night it was a very LONG time before she could make it through the night.....

my beagle is 2 and still wakes me up at night to go out .. and sometimes still has accidents ! best of luck to you . Michelle

My Beagle puppy is now 13 weeks old, I can't believe how fast the time has gone since I picked her up at 8 weeks! She is adorable, black & white with a few spots of brown on her face. She has one ear that looks like a Dalmation's....it's white with many black spots. Her other ear is brown! Then she has several black spots on her belly also. What does your beagle look like?

As far as potty training, it is finally now falling into place. She will walk to the back door & whimper, which started last week. For the first 4 weeks I was taking her out quite often......after eating, after playing, after napping, and usually 2x per night. I also take her for 2 walks/day. Now she is going to sleep in her crate around 11p & not whimpering to go out until 6:30a-7a. I keep her crate in my bedroom at night, that is my best suggestion for eliminating any night time accidents. She had several potty accidents in the house those first few weeks, my vet recommended pet cleaner that had enzymes to kill the odor. It worked great. Just try to take her out as often as possible & don't worry too much about the accidents! It will get better.

My Vet recommended Iams Puppy food, she loves it. I'm sure the Purina brand is good, I just have my Lab on the Iams & wanted to stick with the same brand.

Has your Beagle howled at anything yet? My husband & I laugh every time......she will howl/bark at something, then run behind our legs to hide. That nose of hers is always on the ground.....sniffing away. My Lab will push her with her nose to get her moving sometimes!!

Well, hang in there & congrats on your new addition!

For every month of age, you should only expect one hour of waiting to pee/poop.

If she is 8 weeks old, she need to go out every two hours. Unless she has eaten or drank something that doesn't agree; then you need to pay attention to the whimper.

Thanks for the suggestions and good wishes!

First of all beagles are very stubborn and not easy to house train. It takes a lot of positive reinforcement and a lot of patience.

I have 2 beagles - a 3yr old and a 5yr old. They both pee every 4-6hrs . Jipsy is right about them peeing every hour for each month old they are.

You need to make sure that you take her out immediately after feeding her and keep her out until she goes. Praise her each time she goes and don't free feed her - it's much harder to potty train them when they have food out all day long.

Annie68- I added Sophie's picture to my signature. She is adorable and we love her!
Jenzebelle-Thanks for the advice. We take her out about every hour and right when she wakes up and immediately after she eats. She is good about going to 1 spot in the yard and going right away when we take her out. I feed her 3x a day(per vet) and we take away her food and water after meal time(we do offer her water throughout the day but stop by 5:30pm.
Jipsy- She seems to go more often than every 2 hours when she is awake. She has been napping during the day after running in the yard so she holds it for a while during naptime.

Guess I was looking for some reassurance that she is fine and things will get better. We have only had her for 2wks and I know it will take anoter couple of months to get her on more of a schedule with less potty breaks. In the meanwhile, I guess we will just enjoy her!

She looks adorable! :) What a sweet face! I bet she has that great puppy breath and who cares what she does when you can have that! LOL

We take her out about every hour and right when she wakes up and immediately after she eats.

Some of the best advice I got from a dog trainer: Take the pup out as soon as YOU wake up in the morning. Then, let the pup roam free in an area you have chosen for her (like the kitchen while you are fixing breakfast). Feed the puppy AFTER YOU have eaten, then take her out again. Then crate her again.

If possible, come home at lunch and let her out.

Repeat the same type of morning routine at night after you get home from work.

The important thing is to get her on a definite schedule for peeing/pooping/eating and also that she feels secure in her crate. Also that her schedule fits yours, not the other way around.

My pup now goes to sleep in his crate on his own, because he knows it is "his". We haven't had an accident in a very long time. He is 10 mos old and weighs nearly 70 lbs.

Sophie is so cute!

If you think beagles are bad about having a tiny bladder, try Chihuahuas. lol I have had beagles that trained much easier than one of my Chihuahuas did, but we got her at close to 9 months old and she had been abused. Our boy was 9 weeks old when we brought him home and we had great success with him.

We found that it worked well to buy a baby's playpen and make 1/2 the pen into the pad/potty area and the other half was for blankets and chewies. My honey would walk the pup at 5:30am and I would walk him again before I went to work at 7:30am and then, I would come home at lunch to walk him at 12:30pm and then my honey would be home at 3:30pm to walk him again. Overall, our somewhat staggered schedules really helped get him through it. He still lets me know that I'm oversleeping....lol. He also knows that "Nite-Nite Walk" is his last chance to potty for the night.

We were much happier with the results we got from this than we were from our attempts at crate training in the crate. For the first couple of months, it was literally every 2 hours that we were home that we walked the pup. After that, we had some good 4-6 hour stretches where we had dry times. By the age of 4 months, he was totally housebroken. I can count the number of accidents he had on one hand. It takes a lot of patience and the knowledge that if the floor gets decorated, it's more than likely Mom's fault, not the pup's.

Good luck with that beautiful beagle baby. Mickey

wdwnutze it sounds like you are doing exactly what the vet says you should do :) You also might want to look at your local Petsmart's offerings on training. Mine has one for potty training
(it's also a really good idea to get beagles into puppy kindergarten as soon as possible - mine are going to repeat it because they definitely need a refresher :p)

and I hope you know you got me into a lot of trouble with DH. I saw that picture of your baby's adorable little face and now I want another ;)

jipsy - is that 70lb pup a Beagle ??? mine is fat but only about 45 or so pounds and the vet freaks.. Just wondering Michelle

Congratulations! She's ADORABLE!! :teeth: My little one is now 6 months old. He'll jump on the door during the day to go out, but as soon as it's dark he won't! He just pees on the floor. I'm trying to just take him out in the evenings even though he's not asking. The last two nights I also had him out at 1:30 and 1:45 a.m.! The nurse in the vet's office said it will be a while until he has it down pat. Good luck!

There's no way mine will wait 6 hours to go! Only if I'm out of the house and he's in his crate. But if I'm home, he's constantly outside.
