Morning all!

I am in charge of getting a gift (or gifts) for a friend for her shower, and three of us decided to go in together on something for around $60.00 and I went into her baby registry and she had nothing anywhere close to that range! She has one item for $90 and I think we are all too broke to pitch in $30.00 each then the remaining 10 items or so are around 10 dollars each.

She said she has lots of summer clothes for the baby, though I think if anyone has seen winter clothes still on clearance that might be a good idea!

Does anyone have anything they thought was just the best for thier baby that might be a good idea? This is a second child.. so all the regular stuff might be covered!

Thanks ahead!

In that situation, I think I'd be inclined to buy a $10 toy and a $50 gift card so she can get whatever it is she needs that she didn't receive.

diapers diapers and more diapers... skip size 1 go for size 2 everyone buys size 1

That's what I'd do, too, especially since it's a second shower and she's most likely set on the basics. She can put the gift card towards anything she needs but didn't get.

A case of diapers and a case of wipes. You know you can't have enough of either! (I agree with the PP who said to buy a Size 2.)

We rarely do second showers here (but my gf is hosting one for a friend who is having her 3rd, who has a 6 and 7 year old, but is calling it a celebration dinner, no mention of gifts, so it's up to the individual). How about $60 worth of restaurant gc's in the area?

I would do a laundry basket filled with the neccesities: diapers, wipes, Dreft or All Free Clear, etc. Baskets are about $3-4 at the dollar stores and you can use the $3 printable Huggies coupons (facebook or http://*******.com/y3zhy69 ) to stretch the $60.

I'm definitely one for the necessity basket. I tend to do gifts that moms to be don't typically think of for their registry. And even if this isn't their first, a lot of these things are still needed because they run out. I'm due in a few weeks with my second, and was thrilled when a woman gave me these little essentials because I definitely needed more. Here are some ideas...
-outlet covers
-cabinet locks
-Boogie Wipes (I LOVE those things)
-travel kit of shampoo/wash/etc
-nail clippers
-diaper sack dispenser (and refills)
-teething feeder
-mylicon drops
-infant tylenol
-bottle cleaning brush
-baby orajel (I get the regular and nighttime combo)
-diaper rash cream

Hope that helps.

Kmart has all their winter apparel for $1.99. I got a bunch of sweaters and long-sleeved onesies for my 2 boys for next winter. :)

...and ditto on the necessities. I love the idea of the laundry basket, I can never seem to find one...

I'd go with 6 of the $10 items and put them in a pretty basket with a bow.

Thank you all for the great ideas! Will check out KMart and am thinking about doing a necessity goody bag!

If you haven't shopped yet, here's an idea if you choose to buy a variety of items for a gift basket.

Find one item to represent each letter of the alphabet. For example:

B-baby bath tub (which would be used as the "basket"
C-cup
D-desitin
P-diaper pins
etc

Be very creative in finding something for each letter so that there's some fun in looking at what all is in the basket. When mom opens the gift, she will have to figure out which item goes with each letter, as some items might fit for more than one letter.

This could also be a shower game with all the guests looking at the items and trying to figure out which item for which letter so that everything matches up correctly.

We usually spend about $50-70 when we do this as a shower gift.

I'd stay away from desitin and other items like that. We decided to go the organic route and I got tons of desitin, lotions, and shampoos that I won't use.

Also baby orajel was strongly discouraged by our pediatrician. It can be overused and numb the baby's gag reflex, plus it is just a very short term fix. I'm sure it works for lots, but if she gets the same advice, it'd be a shame to go to waste.

Not saying its wrong to use any of these, just that many moms don't so unless you know she'd want them, I'd stick to items like the outlet covers, bibs, etc.

Also try not to get caught up in a "gimic". We got gifts like that and they spent money on junk just to complete a basket idea. The baskets were cute, but I always feel bad not using gifts.

Size 3 diapers are also awesome. Seems like DD has been in those forever. We got lots of 1s and 2s. I was so happy to have those 3s stashed away for the day I realized the 2s just weren't going to cut it, especially overnight.

Some inexpensive "gadgets" I got that I love.

-a reusable placemat that sticks to the table. We take it to restaurants all the time
- Lots of Links LOVE LOVE LOVE these. You can use them to attach toys to car seats, strollers, high chairs or they can be toys on their own. And they are cheap. They are little rings with a notch so they can link up. I always get these for friends and am surprised at how many people have not heard of them.
- Gift card for a website with photoprinting

If you go the necessity route I would also leave off orajel- we would never use that!
We also never used Mylicon.
Its also a second child so they may not need cabinet locks or outlet covers (my daughter is 10 and I still have a bunch tossed in a drawer for when little ones come to visit.)
They may also still have a diaper sack disenser from their first child.
Diapers are a good if you know for sure if they are using cloth or disposable. Some people gave me cloth at my shower which I did not use. Some people use them for burp cloths but I did not.

Bibs. A lot of my bibs got stained so I needed all new ones. Crib sheets and the changing table covers are also something else than can get stained that she might need new of. I also second the placemats as a pp mentioned, they are great and you could get some bibsters to go with them.

What about the Pampers 1/2 size diapers that they sell at Sam's (maybe Cosco too?) they are bigger than a 1, but smaller than a 2. Also both of my kids are skinny so the larger diapers would have been in the closet for years. My DD went from size 3 to pullups.

You could also do big/little (brother or sister?) sibling shirts if the sibling is young still. My kids are pretty close in age, but are a boy and girl so I needed clothes and was trying to think of the other things I needed.

okay, Butt Paste is a good gift, diapers work great. If the baby is the opposite sex, then clothing in a larger size is good. Maybe a snowsuit for next winter ? J&J baby wash is great and maybe some lotion since I loved lotioning my kids up. Most people are not organic (depends on where you live0 and would be happy to use whatever you give to them. Don't worry, anything you decide to get will be welcome. She may have stuff left from her first child but it depends on the age difference. If the child is young, take about $10 and spend it on them on a "new big brother/sister" gift.

Once I bought a gift certificate for a portrait place and a frame. The momma LOVED this gift. It was very creative and unique.

And I fully admit stealing the idea from the very creative woman who gave it to the new momma at the shower I attended previously.

....I think one thing that NEVER is overrated is a new diaper bag - they go through a lot and, the mom can have different ones to go with different circumstances (ie: extended visit, one that matches the stroller, 'shopping' diaper bag, etc.) ...then, you can fit it with some 'essentials' - bottles, travel-size wipes, change-of-clothes, onesie, bib, etc....good luck!

See I'm a simplest.. I dont even own a diaper bag! I just throw an extra diaper in the car and we are off!

OP I'm sure what ever you get her will be appreciated!
