I need ammo!!!!!

No offense taken you know I love ya girl:banana:

Aww right bak at ya:)

This is really bothering me I think that it is so stupid to have to upgrade. All they have to do is add fondant.I would call your planner and have her explain to you why????

It's silly.

Okay - I think I am understanding what you are wanting. You want the standard intimate cake - but you want fondant instead of buttercream. Right?

If that is correct - then yes you can do that. I also had Jennifer at the beginning, and while things may have changed since my wedding, I was told by her that I could have fondant on the cake for a $50 fee. However, you DO realize that you will still have buttercream on the cake. Just as much as if you didn't have the fondant, as the bakers need something for the fondant to stick to. So, you will really not be helping yourself with that.

I did upgrade my cake to a custom cake, and it wasn't a $450 fee. It was more like $200. And then I had the white chocolate castle. So in the end, I spent around $350. While we did have plenty left over for everyone to take home and share, it was also the cake of my dreams and I wouldn't have had it any other way....

I think I might just be doing that. I also now own a copy of the pricing guide for all custom cakes (thanks to a very helpful DIS bride) so I am going to look it over & see if there are any other options that might be helpful.....

The $30,000 is for everything, lodging, airfair, attire, etc. We are over the $10,000 in Disney expenditures but under the $15,000 required for November. I did initially inquire about a custom wedding becuase I was intrested in some of the options but I was told our guest count was too low.

Ohhhh. That makes more sense.

But really, they told you your guest count was too low? That's dumb. What do they care as long as you meet the minimums? Sometimes Disney makes that little vein in my head throb.

Sorry to hear about your cake woes. Honestly, for $450? I'd scrape the butter cream to one side and enjoy the cakey goodness within. Mmmm cake.

If your planner's making you bonkers, can you ask for another one?

Thanks for the help - I didn't know they used butter cream to stick the fondant to the cake. So now I need to be searching for other icing options; hmmmm......

P.S. your wedding was GORGEOUS - it was one of the first TR that I read along with Maggie & Tiffany - they are what inspired me:)

Thank you, I hope I was able to help.

I really don't know what else you could use other than the fondant. Have you asked her about a whipped topping instead of the buttercream? Maybe that would work better for you. :)

So, here's what I need:

If you were an intimate/escape bride & had these types of changes could you please post a pic of your cake, your wedding date, your first name & your planner's name. Also, if there was a charge to make any changes if you could please post that as well. I am not opposed to paying a small upgrade charge but paying for a full custom cake is ridiculous.

I haven't had my wedding yet, but I've asked my planner a million cake questions! Here are two cakes I've asked about:

Mickey Wave

This cake (minus the castle topper and only 2 layers instead of 3) was quoted $225. I asked my planner about the intimate cake "base price" or what they apply to the cake costs and was told "The charge for the upgrade is $225.00 (plus tax and gratuity). This is in addition to the cake price that is included in the package. The package cost of the Intimate cake is not $200.00."

I also asked about the smaller Mickey's Delight cake.

This was quoted at $175.

Both of these cakes have fondant. However, as Cinderella Fan mentioned, the fondant just covers the buttercream. When you eat the cake I was told that they remove the fondant. Basically it is just for show. A lot of people don't like fondant... I think I would, but I have a major sweet tooth.

I spoke to one of the people at Boardwalk Bakery regarding cakes. I was told to ask my DFTW planner about a tasting. I did tell the Bakery that we were an intimate (not that it would matter to them). He said they just need to know someone is coming so they can prepare the cake samples and fillings. That seems rather simple to me. It seems to me that DFTW doesn't want Intimate brides having a tasting since it is a "package" deal.

Just to make everyone feel better about the cake prices for intimates...we paid $1200 for our custom cake! We had the fondant and yes they put buttercream underneath, thats what makes the fondant adhere to the cake. I don't think they will use any other type but it doesn't hurt to ask. I can't imagine for just an upgrade to fondant it would be that much money, that doesn't seem right.

I was floored when I started talking cakes with my planner. I paid $450 for a cake and then I had to throw more than 1/2 of it away because I couldn't bring it back across the boarder with me.

I didn't want a cake initially, but as planning went on I got caught up in the "wedding stuff" and decided I needed one. Looking back I wouldn't have done it. I would have put the money towards a character or something... It was beautiful and very tasty, but really a waste. Oh well... :sad2:

I'm no expert, but I think here in the UK they use apricot jam/jelly to stick the fondant onto the cake rather than buttercream, and most people I know here tend to eat the fondant (or at least some of it). But then again, most wedding cakes here are very rich and heavy fruit cakes often laced with alcohol (or maybe it's changed since I was married 11 years ago???)

yes we have royal icing and marzipan! I love that its the best bit of the cake!! We normally have buttercream inside a sponge with some jam!! Yummy Might go and bake one now actually!!

Yeah, I agree. The icing is usually the best part of the cake:) I never did like fruit cake though, YUK! I love sponge cake with buttercream and jam though!

Yes I hate fruit cake but sponge is the best!! I cant wait till our cake tasting!

I used to do cakes many years ago...there are several types of icings that can be used. However, the better tasting icings (boiled egg white icing) won't hold up well in the Florida humidity, and can be difficult to work with....if the weather is too humid, the icing would melt into a puddle. Royal icing, a dried egg white based icing, also would melt or get "goo-ey". Fondant and buttercream are really the best for the climate, and lend themselves to decorating better in Florida's humidity. Anything with egg whites or heavily sugar based will absorb moisture from the air and loose that "fresh" look.

A whipped cream type icing, mock whipped cream, or a pastry cream may work OK, but it can be difficult to work with to hold peaks and piped decorations.

I'm an aspiring cake decorator and just wanted to chime in on the fondant vs buttercream issue...

Unless Disney is willing to use an apricot jam or something similar underneath the fondant, you will still have buttercream on the cake. It won't necessarily be as much as if you had just a plain buttercream cake, but it will still be there. Keep in mind that the buttercream that Disney will use is NOT the same stuff that you would get on a decorated cake from the grocery store. That stuff is nasty...shortening and sugar. Blech...I can't even stand that stuff! Buttercream made with real butter is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than that stuff!!!

As far as eating the fondant itself, it really depends on how it is made. Some of it is just plain nasty and gross. The brand that I use is actually made from white chocolate, but I don't believe that Disney uses that. According to the wedding specials i've seen about Disney wedding cakes, they peel the fondant off anyway. Again, that's what I saw on, I think, the Unwrapped special on Disney World on the Food Network.

As far as why they might charge more for a fondant covered cake is that it takes more work in order to decorate with it. It's not super easy to work with sometimes. Most cake decorators I know have an upcharge if working with fondant. It's pretty much like playdoh for cakes...it has to be kneaded and rolled out and the hope you got it big enough to cover the dang cake...I hate fondant!! For me, it's frustrating...but I'm not a professional decorator yet. I don't have to work with it on a daily basis. (I'm still in culinary school and only decorate cakes at home for fun right now...hoping to change that soon though!!)

I don't agree with an upcharge of $400 for a relatively small cake though. That is just plain ridiculous!! Here's hoping that you can find a happy medium!! (if the buttercream that they use on their cakes is anything like the buttercream on their cupcakes at the Poly, it is a little taste of heaven!!)

Keep us posted on your battle! I'd love to know what you decide! I love talking about cakes! :)

mystichell - I'm sorry for the cake issues your having. I'm not an intimate bride so I don't really know the guidelines. I too did have cake issues though. We are having a small group (18). At first we ordered the Happily Ever After Cake. When we got our BEO we were shocked to see if cost $785. That was 3 layers. Why do we need 3 layers of cake for 18 people? No clue. So we have been emailing back and forth with our CM and decided on the two-tiered Mickey Wave cake which will be $385. Still crazy expensive for a cake...but well it's Disney.

Good luck!

Hi Ladies,

I'm not really familiar...can someone post what their "buttercream" cake or their "fondant" cake looked like so I can see the difference?

TIA!

Brandie beat me to the punch on the fact that fondant is more labor-intensive than buttercream.

It's also been mentioned that Disney doesn't serve the fondant, this is true. Fondant is really just for show. When they go to cut and serve the cake, they take the fondant off, so you are just served cake with buttercream. I don't know how WDW buttercream is, but the buttercream on my DL cake was the most amazing thing ever. I do not like frosting, btw. It's just too sweet for me. DL buttercream, though, was not sweet at all. Kind of buttery. I could have eaten it straight! But it wasn't like eating a stick of butter. I don't know how to describe it, but I haven't found a recipe yet that even comes close. What don't you like about buttercream?
