Ok so southwest is going to open flights for when we are leaving on November 14 but i'm not sure if i should go ahead and book then or wait till it gets closer to our departure maybe three months out or something. We aren't leaving till June. I keep telling myself that its still a possibility for us to drive if its ridiculously expensive...uggh i so don't know what to do. Also if i wait too long there is that possibility that i won't be able to get the 7 seats that we need for our group. i know that they offer credits for future flights if the price goes down but we don't fly very often so that would be a waste for us. just need some advice. Thanx

First, you don't choose seats on sw until you get to the plane. If sitting as a group is important buy the early electronic checkin thing. It will check you in at 36 hours instead of 24 so you are ahead of everyone who didn't buy it. I don't fly sw too much but I believe the get away price is usually the cheapest and when it sells out it sells out. I would buy earlier rather than wait.

On SWA, it's best to book as soon as the flights open. You will have the best choice of lower cost seats. Yes, it's possible there will be a Ding (although they seem to be few and far between these days) or a fare sale, but I wouldn't count on it.

We purchased ours the day they went on sale, at the lowest fare. Within a week those fares were all gone, nothing has changed since. For Southwest, I buy the day the flights go on sale.

With SWA it is a gamble. In March 2011 I bought our tickets from Cleveland to Orlando for a May 2011 trip. Then two weeks later the price went down so I rebooked and a $86 credit. Then a week later they went down again so I rebooked yet again. By the time we took our trip we ended up with a $200 credit. I just booked another trip for Feb 2012 using the credit we had with SWA.
