I need advice on pierced ears-New question p.2

hahah - my first holes were done at my kitchen table when I was in 4th grade. My mom's friend was a nurse and had a gun (the old school stainless steel gun - now they are all plastic). Anyway - they boiled it on the stove for like an hour...when she did my first ear my foot bucked up and kicked the table. NOT from the piercing though - from the gun - it was still HOT!!! hehehe

My DD had hers done for her 10th birthday. We went to a reputable local jewlers (Of course, being in our little community, we know the owners). They did use 14k gold for the piercings. We also bought a couple of good pairs of earrings for her there. We cleaned them 2x a day with peroxide and used neosporin for the first few weeks and they were fine.

However, for my DD using post type earrings led to problems on the backs of her ears. The post clasp thingie rubbed against her ears and they got very red. They weren't infected, but they were sore. We ended up with some pretty expensive hoop type earring that latch closed, but allow air flow. She wears them all the time, and any time that they are out of her ears, they are in my possession.

I got my daughters done when she was 4 months old at Piercing Pagoda and it never got infected. After you get them done they put some stuff on it to stop the stinging and my daughter got a sucker so she was a real pro. My sister got them done at 8yrs and has always got infected but she is allergic to jewlery and thats how she found out.

I think 10 is old enough to get your DD's ears pierced. I didn't want mine done till i was 12, but that's not much older. Can't say anything about having it at Claire's cause I predate that store. But your mall may have a Piercing Pagoda. That's where i got mine done. The earings were good quality and as long as your DD keeps up with the daily solution she'll need to use for the 6 weeks, then she should be fine.
But if you don't want your ears done simply tell her you don't want to get them pierced.

Good luck

Thanks for all the responses. I'm just flying blind here and figured there'd be a few of you here to help me out!;)
New question...The earrings that you get your ears pierced with- Can you were them again later? I've heard the posts are bigger and you can't wear them later. If I get 14k gold I want us to be able to use them again 'cause I'm cheap and I want to get my money's worth!:D

Of course you can - you can leave them in forever if you want.

After the ears have 'healed" (genearll 6-12 weeks), take the earrings out - give them a good cleaning, then file down the pointy part with a file (if you want - you don't have to) and put them back in.

the backing on MOST of the newer stlyed piercing posts cover the pointy part...so you can skip filing if you want.

the posts aren't THAT much bigger then other, cheapy earrings. so it wouldn't really make a difference down the road. (but of course, if she wants to wear 'fish hook' style earrings after the first 6-12 weeks, make sure she puts 'post' earrings back in before she goes to bed.

. What I was surprised at was the cost. I wasn't expecting to pay $25 and that was the cheapest. I know that they say that the piercing is free and I knew that the earrings would cost something but

Kirby: The piercing earings are more expensive a lot of the time than cheap earings. First, they need to fit the gun, and second they need to be very good quality so they can avoid infecting the ears. So $5.00 earrings from Hallmark aint gonna work for pierciings. The good news is your DD will probably keep wearing cheap earrings till she becomes an adult. That's what i did. Heck, some of my earrings only cost me 50 cents. Oh to go back to the 80s

My daughter went to Claires when she was ten. The right ear went fine. The gun jammed on the left ear and they practically ripped her ear lobe off trying to get the darn thing loose. We cleaned them as instructed and never could get them to heal. My daughter must have some metal allergies as we tried everything and could never find a pair of earrings that would not cause an infection. After six months of this I had to put my foot down and made her take out the earrings. She was very upset and cried for a couple of days but then realized it just wasn't meant to be. Now what's really odd is that the left ear that had the worst problem gets the most horrible blackheads (sorry, I know it's gross to talk about). The other ear gets none and I really believe the gun they used had some type of bacteria that is causing this. (They used two people with two guns so they could do both ears at once -- seemed like a good idea at the time!)

Not always... it is very true that the earrings are bigger than an average stud earring. There is NO way I could fit one of those in my ear holes now.

you are absolutely correct...actual piercing/tattoo parlors do a great job...however, for just a lobe piercing, a gun should be fine
I will have to disagree with this remark... there is NO way those guns are steril... to be sterilized you have to heat them to a certain degree and the plastic would melt. Alcohol won't kill everything and I can't imagine how much gunk gets on those guns. Also by using them it allows for more iritations and infections to occur. You aren't "piercing" the skin as much as you are tearing it. It's not a "clean cut" and it can cause more trouble and more bleeding than it should. I've had a needle piercing once and a gun 4 other times. I wouldn't ever do a gun again. Needles are less painful, quicker and healed easier for me. I have read more in to piercing after getting my ears and navel done and I wish I had known what I know then, now!

Go here and look up a good peircer who is certified http://www.safepiercing.org/ by the APP. That way you know you will get someone who is safe, using the right jewelry for the type of piercing and htat you won't be putting anything terrible on a peircing that will cause it to become infected or reject.

Ah, the ear piercing debate. I went to get my third holes when I was 21 and my dad still griped about me getting "another hole in my head." ;) I got mine done for the first time in the 6th grade, but my sister went with me and she was in the 4th. I'd say go for it.

The first time I went to Claire's and had no problem. The second holes I went to Piercing Pagoda. They gave my ears a lot of attention and knew what they were doing. On a whim my sister and I went to get our third ones done at Claire's up at school. Not only were mine uneven, but they were infected so badly I had to pull (literally) the earrings out and let them close up. I think it all depends on the person and the store. I go to school in a very small town and I don't think they have a lot of people to pick from to pierce ears. Ultimately, I'd go with Piercing Pagoda.

Sometimes I still wear my piercing earrings. They're pointy in the back because they have to go through your ear. As long as that's not a problem, it's fine to wear them again.

Good luck!!! Just make sure you and your DD take care of them and they'll be fine. :)

I have two piercings in each ear. The first one I had done when I turned 13...second when I turned 19 or 20. I cleaned them correctly and did everything right. Was able to wear any type of posts in the first hole for years...but after I got the second one done...the first one became infected/irritated no matter what type of earring I put in. So I moved the diamonds my dad gave me to the second hole and they have been there for 6 or 7 years now.....still can't wear anything in the first ones without them getting irritated. So strange.

My ears are pierced. I had them done when I was in 7th grade. I never had any problems. I do have a metal allergy that gives me problems with certain earrings. I suggest checking out earrings at www.simplywhispers.com. My ears don't burn or itch when I wear their earrings and the prices aren't bad.

DD had her ears pierced at age 2 because she was asking for earrings. She never had a problem either. Personally, I am not fond of the guns. I like it better when they mark your ears and just push the sharp earring through. It seems more sterile to me.
