Never used one. All I know is that you get one, and come back at the time on the ticket.

I also know that there are some rules on how many you can collect at one time?

What is the best strategy for collecting them?

http://www.wdwinfo.com/disneyland/fastpass.htm

also it is best to collect fastpasses for the rides that have them (ie..buzz, space mountain)in the morning and stand in the lines that dont have them (ie..matterhorn, peterpan). saving the fastpasses for afternoon. when the lines are longer. and you will already have done the ones with no fastpasses.

fastpasses can be used at anytime after their valid time starts. does not have to be in the window of time that is listed on the fastpass.

dl fastpasses are on a separate system than ca so can have fastpasses for both parks.

fastpasses list when you can get your next fastpass. be sure to pick one up.

When you are at a fast pass machine don't forget to take a look at some of the void fast passes left on top of the machine. Last year we found a number of them and they enabled our kids to go on their favorite rides more often.

We used Hydroguys information last year in March and it worked great. We had a pile left over after 4 days because we had so many.

Another bit of advice is to check standby if it is 15 minutes you can use the fastpasses later. We did that on Indiana Jones, the fast pass works well later in the day but in the morning the que for fastpass only gets you a little ways into the inside section. Other rides you get up closer pretty quick.

We did the same thing for BTMRR. Used the fastpasses when it got busy and rode 3 times as much.

We also take turns and make sure that whenever the time is valid we go get another fastpass. In the morning while the girls were riding at fantasyland with daddy I ran and got Buzz, visiting cinderella I got SM, etc. You just have to run a little. Luckily for us DH doesn't like to ride a lot so he organizes the fastpasses for us.

We also were given fastpasses by people after they walked on the ride. One for Space mountain was the nicest.
