Well our laptop has officially died and I only have an iPod touch to use the Internet so I definitely need a new computer. I need a recommendation on a "cheap" one laptop, pc, mac, etc I have no preference or atleast a great brick and mortar place to buy one. As far useage I really only browse the Internet upload pics and allow my kindergartener to play learning games.

My dd just bought a new Acer laptop at Best Buy and paid less than $500. Very happy with it so far. We have 2 Acer laptops and one desk top and have no complaints.

Check your local Wal Mart - they had a $398 laptop.

I think laptops are almost disposable anymore- I would look for a Pentium processor (Duo, i3, etc.) and be sure it has a wireless card installed (most do now).

Many of the word processing/data programs are preloaded as samples now, so you may have to purchase Microsoft software, unless a full version is loaded.

We've gotten our best deals on a desktop then a laptop at Staples of all places. We bought our laptop last August. It's a Toshiba ($449) with a 17in monitor and I don't know all the bells and whistles. We had gone in for an HP that was $398 but they were out of it.

We've liked the Toshiba but we did run into a fluke thing with the motherboard in Dec (yeah-only 4 months) but their repair depot sent us a box, picked it up UPS, replaced the motherboard and had it back to us in about 10 days and we were able to track it's progress online the entire time they were working on it.

While deals can be had at brick and mortar stores, you have to know what you are looking for. You are usually better off buying online (and hopefully saving sales tax) especially when stack-able coupons appear.

There are sites devoted to finding such deals for you. gotapex.com is one such site, telling you the deal, when it expires, coupons codes to apply, and suggested upgrades that are value priced. Others to look at are techdeals.net and slickdeals.net. But you have to act fast, companies will raise the price if an item is selling fast.

When comparing deals you need to be aware of the processor. Here are the processor names in order of power.
Atom, Celeron, Pentium, Pentium Dual Core, Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7.

3GB of memory is also the minimum you should get as well as Windows 7 Home Premium.

Common tricks to lower the price of the laptop are to install Windows 7 Starter or Basic edition and include 2 GB of memory.

When you have to pick between one or the other, always take more memory over a larger hard drive. Always take a 2 processor category improvement over memory. (So a i3 with 2GB memory is better than a Pentium Dual Core with 3GB memory for the same price)

There are other items to consider such as video cards, but you aren't doing anything with the laptop to dictate having that sway your choice as the included options will most likely always be just fine for you.

Thanks everyone. Great advice atleast now I have a starting point as to what specifications to look for and not just a price.
