I just got to work, and it is FREEZING in here. I mean, its about 59 outside, and its about the same in here - no joke. There is one guy in this office that likes it really cold, so he has come in before anyone else, turned on the A/C and frozen the place. And the kicker.... HES WEARING A FLEECE JACKET!!!! My hands are so cold, I can barely write/type! I am colder than most people, so it really affects me, and I do dress warmly to try and counter act it. Today I'm wearing courdorys (sp?) a sweater a shirt under it and a jacket over (because its so cold). I wish I had worn my Uggs.
I just don't think its fair that he does this all the time (though to be fair he is not here every single day).

Anyone else have to deal with bad "weather conditions" in their office? I'd love to hear about people who have HOT offices!!! LOL

Our office is freezing. I never even pack up my winter work clothes because I just keep wearing them all year long and take off layers when I leave work. I can almost never wear anything cute and summery to work in the summer because its too flippin cold once you get in here! The guys in the office right behind me keep their thermostat at 63 which to me is COLD and it makes MY desk cold! They can walk by and see me shivering, teeth chattering, covered in goosebumps and they couldn't care less. Surely there must be some happy medium between my blood freezing and their's boiling?!?!

If only we were allowed to have personal heaters!

I have a corner office that is surrounded by window, in the summer it is ungodly hot, in the winter I am freezing. I bought a personal fan/heater which helps alot.

It's cold in our offices too. They have a "reverse air system" and no matter what time of year it is, I always have my little heater on! This is south GA so in the summer, it is 90s and 100s most days.... I shouldn't need a heater!!!

This was one of the first things I thought of when my company told my division we would start working from home full time... NO MORE THERMOSTAT WARS!!!

My co-worker was just like yours. She was hot ALL the time (and too young for menopause, so that wasn't it) and then wore thick sweaters and other heavy clothes in winter, and then turn the heat off (not down....OFF!) saying she was roasting to death. Meanwhile my boss, other co-workers, and myself were freezing our butts off. If it wasn't for my boss (who had the cubicle by the window and felt the drafts coming in) we'd have frozen to death, because my boss would over-ride my co-worker and at least bump the thermostat up a few notches.

Now that I work from home, I keep my office toasty warm, and my co-worker can wear a parka and keep her apartment at 55, if that's what she wants.

OP, I hear ya!

I 2nd getting a personal heater. I have one by my desk and I really need it. I freeze easily too!

We try and keep it at 78 degrees in our office. We used to have big time "thermostat wars." Now we keep at 78 and everyone has a little fan or a little heater in case they need it.

Seems to be working well.

Yep. In the summer I need sweaters, in the winter camisoles..... Mostly its because the sytem they put in our building is too big for it and pushs too much air but it's partly due to thermostat wars too.

Someone needs to put a locked box over the thermostat and keep it what would be considered a decent temp for an office.

I was laid off in February, but I had the same problem in my office! In the middle of winter - December, January, when we were lucky to have it in the teens and 20s - the people in my area of the office opened the windows AND put on the AC because "it's stifling hot in here!" These were girls in their early 20s, wearing short-sleeved t-shirts, too. I am always cold - I need a sweater when it's 70 degrees - and lucky me, I was right in line with both the windows and AC unit. So I was sitting there...wearing a long-sleeved thermal t-shirt, TWO sweaters, my wool coat, wrapped in a fleece blanket. I kid you not. It's not like I was demanding the heat to be up to 80 degrees; I was more than willing to compromise and put on ONE sweater, but geez, my hands were literally blue...

I tried bringing in a small space heater, but the director of operations came by one day, saw me all wrapped up with the heater going, and told me, "I don't know what the dynamics in this office are, but you need to take that heater home. We can't have those here"

Here's a suggestion! Since "going green" is such a politically correct things nowadays and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon........if you have staff meetings or something like that, then suggest that your company implement some changes to be part of the "greening of America".

Suggest that the thermostat be set at a particular temp in the summer and a particular temp in the colder months. It's not for YOU.......its for the EARTH!

Oh man, this is so my office! LOL The guys are ALWAYS hot, the girls are always cold. I'm sitting at my desk (under the ac) right now with a sweatshirt on! LOL I'm always cold. BUT we are allowed to have personal heaters at our desks so YAY! Hopefully this winter will be better, last winter the heater wasn't working so I would come to work in a tank top, t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, sweater/sweatshirt, a blanket over my legs AND gloves on! LOL The boss had the heater guys out to check the system, walked them to my desk and said "I can't make her work like this, please find and fix the problem" LOL As of last winter the problem was fixed....but the guys still want it set at 68!!!! HUH????? 68????? Are they CRAZY? Good luck OP, see if you can bring in a personal heater, it really does help.

Wow. 78 seems kinda hot. My office is sitting at 74 which feels a little too warm.

My wife keeps the house at 65-66. I know that she would be complaining about 78.

There have been studies that show offices with colder temperatures are less productive than warmer ones. When your body is cold it moves more blood to only your vital functions and that impairs the efficiency of everything else. That includes the brain. Your vital brain functions are given precedence and your less necessary thinking areas become less efficient. It can literally be too cold to think.

Not to mention how much electricity office buildings burn keeping it so cold. Bad for efficiency and bad for the environment. Warm it up, people!

Regarding the bolded bit, I'd be interested in what the study thought was 'cold'. There is quite a difference between 60° and 72°. While I can see how a very cold temp would result in the effects discussed in this study, I rather doubt that we are talking about a 72° office, however.

Conversely, I would imagine that more people would be negatively affected by an office that is typically 78° than one that is 72°. The chilled people can put on a sweater, after all.

I would be sweating if I had to work where it was kept at 78! Uggg!! At least if its cold you can put a jacket on..you can only take off so many clothes when you are to warm!
We keep the A/C on 62 where I work and at home I keep mine at 60, especially when I sleep, I like it cold!

I don't understand why you can't just go in the middle. Some want it 75, some want it 65... go 70.

But personally, I like it to be colder because I can always layer up... there's only so much you can take off when it's hot.

I teach in an old building. Monday the heat was on and we were very hot. Yesterday (48 degrees outside) the blowers were all blowing cold air. I was wearing a long sleeve shirt and a fleece jacket and was still cold. Today, cold air again, but it was a bit warmer out. I was wearing a cami, short sleeve shirt, and a sweater today. There's not a lot to be done about it, but I can't understand why in an office with a controllable temperature someone doesn't set the thermostat to a happy medium. 68 or 72 isn't so uncomfortable that your fingers freeze, and the guys in suits won't melt either.

This is a gripe I've had for as long as I've been working. I don't get why some people have a need to freeze! The last place I worked at was staffed with mostly post-menopausal women who liked the place to feel like a refrigerator. There was one other girl besides me who hated it that cold all the time--we were outnumbered and just bundled up in sweaters.

There is no way for anyone to control the temperature at the office I work in now. It's set by the building's management, and it's generally colder than I prefer in the summer. I keep a jacket or sweater there at all times.

I'm waiting for menopause to hit me so maybe I won't feel so cold all the time.
