Thanks for the link, I've marked it and, will be taking a look this weekend.

As luck would have it, I answered a sales call tonight from SBC, wanting to sell me DSL. $29.95/mo (that's 1/2 what I'm paying now), free installation (more like SELF-installation), free equipment, unlimited use and unlimited dial up use, 11 emails, etc. ONLY charges were $12.95 shipping and $5-$7 Illinois tax, both one-time charges. This lady even told me that DSL won't be as fast as my cable but, I explained my cable has NEVER been fast. She couldn't tell me how close I was to a 'central office' but, she said within 24-72 hours after ordering, SBC will come and "PING" my line and, see if it's viable for their service. Very  about that one. Anyway, they are also my local phone service and, I WOULD like to consolidate as many bills as I can. I have until Monday to decide, for this 'special offer'. Any more opinions?

sorry to bump :o

WE have Yahoo SBC DSL and pay $26.95 per month.... tell her you want a better rate..

That sounds like a very good price. The Telco will tell you if you are close enough for good DSL service.

In all honesty, the speed differences between DSL and cable aren't noticable if you do general web surfing. It's when you download big files or visit graphic rich websites that you'll notice a bit of a difference.

I tend to upload big files for my job and this is the real reason that I wanted to use DSL. Cable is slower uploading than DSL and has a tendency to get slower as the upload progresses. DSL is very stable with uploads.

So I've probably confused the matter even more but if all you do is "casual" websurfing, either DSL or cable will suffice, let price be your guide.

Feel free to email me if you need more info.

Peace

Thank you again! And, I'm not any more confused today than I am any other day! LOL :p I briefly checked the site and, Covad & DirecTv are definately out. ATT also offers DSL, which surprises me since they were the ones that sold the cable business to Comcast .... anyway....

I'm thinking about going with SBC if they give me geffric's price, which is what I saw online also.

Thanks again everyone!

I had DSL and really liked it. Then I moved to another area and discovered it was not available here so have ComCast. I prefered the DSL over the ComCast but have no choice unless I want to go to a dial up and certainly don't want to do that.

We use Optimum Online and love it. It is a product of Cablevision so I don't think it is offered in your area. If it does make it your way, I highly recommend it.

We have 2 computers hooked up with a cable and my laptop is wireless. I still haven't figured out the Wi-Fi network thing yet. Anyway, I can't remember our service being down for longer then 5 minutes.

If Optimum makes its way to your area, I'd say check it out.

Kim, I have Cablespeed thru our cable company but there are many days I question the "speed" part!!! I'd love to get whatever service our school uses. Man! Are their computers fast!!!!::yes::

Good luck!:D

I have to say I have Comcast Cable Internet and I'm thrilled with it. I hope it stays this fast.

I hope it does for you, too. Again tonight my service is slow. It's gotta be the area I'm in. I had no problems at work today.

I decided to go with SBC DSL. They're also giving me a choice between a digital camera or an MP3 player for signing up. Add that to 1/2 the cost I'm paying now and, consolidating my internet & phone bill (via e-bill) and, I'm a new customer..... after I get the stuff mailed to me.

Wish me luck! Thanks everyone!!

Kim

Does that mean you are going to be running around DIS meets with a digital camera now? Can Dan and I leave ours at home? :Pinkbounc

No way! I'll leave the picture taking to the experts! I'll get the MP3 player for Matt instead. ;)

KimRaye, sorry to join this thread so late, but I will tell you that I have SBC service and am quite happy with it. That being said, one of the differences between Cable and DSL is that with the DSL you can get a guaranteed bandwidth. I have a different connection than most (I actually have commercial DSL service). I started with Earthlink, they used COVAD, and I was as far away from the CO as possible without being in the next CO's area (I flunked all of the DSL speed tests) They sold me an IDSL line.
(what most people mean by DSL is ADSL..Up and downloads are at different speeds. Commercial people generally want SDSL...Up and downloads going the same speed IDSL is an ISDN line over a DSL line so you bypass some of the distance problems) I was quite happy with my connection until SBC told me that they could more than quadruple my bandwidth (The located an R-HOP, or remote CO a block away from my house). DW thinks that Earthlink was faster, and I think they were a "Tier 1 provider" but the downloads work great.

As my good and dear friend Alex told you, service really does depend on your area, and as an addition, since the DSL can guarantee bandwidth, you won't have a total slowdown.

IloveDMB, Some people on this thread say a firewall slows you down; I would preface that with it depends on the firewall. I would strongly urge anyone on a cable modem or DSL to have a firewall. At the very least you need a router that runs NAT (Native Address Translation) If you are looking into wireless, linksys makes a broadband router that plugs unto your cable modem/DSL modem, and has a built in 802.11G WYFI access point (if you already have a router or a real firewall then all you need is the access point, but they are both $99 and CompUsa for your choice.) the 802.11G will work with the 802.11B card that is probably in your laptop, and will support the newer higher speeds as well. they come with great documentation; it took all of 20 minutes for me to get mine hooked up, and DW likes to watch QVC and check prices while they are having their scrap booking events, and she doesn't need a phone cord...)

PM me if you want more information; I can tell you that firewalls like Black-Ice that sit in the computer are not nearly as effective as a separate box, Many people call a router a firewall because it changes your internet address to a local address thus making it more difficult to hack into your system.

Sorry for the rambling, 3 other quick things, Get a good Virus Scan program that updates every day. Run a program to remove Ad-Ware (like Gator that Kazaa installs) I use Adware by www.lavasoft.de it is free, doesn't do the best job against the biggies like Gator, but will really speed up most systems. Do a system cleanup to get rid of temporary files and run a Defrag...Again, PM me for More detailed instructions...

end of rant....
Clap, Clap, Clap!
