I miss the old Community Board

I started on DISboards when I worked at TDS and after my first trip to WDW. I don't visit the trip planning boards as often because I love coming to the CB. Does that make me not "DISboard" material??
And... I dont' think its right to 'research' what other posters are doing.. that's a bit creepy in my opinion, but CF, sadly, isn't the first to do it.

well, I guess I am not the only one who feels that way... The whole idea of saying someone isn't a true dis'r ...as stated in this thread, was really quite insulting. would be a good debate topic though..

There are plenty of other places to have these discussions. Why do people feel they MUST take place on the DIS as well?

It would still be a problem for the moderators.

Once the disBoard moderators got their candidate elected, they changed the policy so criticism of their candidate cannot happen.

If a peaceful, fair board was what they wanted, they would have changed the board policy in early 2008. But no, they waited until after the election when their guy got elected. The timeline tells the truth about the DisBoard moderators.

Also, after the change in policy, I don't see Steve in Brooklyn posting anymore. It was almost like he was just on the board to promote the moderators views.

Interesting theory, but way off base. The idea that the moderators as a whole have a common political vision and agenda is pretty amusing...

The truth is that the political threads very often devolved into ugly name-calling and fighting threads. I don't recall many civilized "debates" here, mostly arguments and attacks.

And if we pulled the trigger on these threads later than you would have liked, it's only because we tried really hard to ride the ugliness out, and were hoping that things would quiet down when the election was over. When that didn't happen and the nasty political threads continued to dominate the Community Board, we decided that we had to make a change.

A political debate board (or any sort of argument or debate board) is not something we're interested in moderating or hosting. There are LOTS of other places on the web where those discussions are welcome.

I agree.

Back when I lived in New York I would have spent a lot more time on the othe boards as part of planning my annual vacations to WDW. I still pop in from time to time to get an idea how others enjoy various parks, resorts and dining and to offer my opinion and knowledge if I can be of help. I now live an hour away so I don't really plan, I just go.

Still, we all have a common interest in all things Disney and yet we are a diverse sort. That makes adult conversation about a lot of things a good thing. I find the CB a great place to get information on all sorts of topics and issues from people I have at least something in common with. Heck, sometimes I get breaking news here before it shows on some of the leading news sites.

When we discuss anything, I think it's okay for it to get spirited and thought-provoking. The problem is when normally good people just can't agree to disagree in the end. Politics and religion will always raise issues that people will never agree on, they have for centuries. It would be nice to have a format for that here, but if it causes too many problems for the owners of the DIS I understand their position. Perhaps we can agree to disagree on that!

The problem with all of your posts on this subject is that you make it seem as if you are entitled to talk about these subjects. You act as if your freedom of speech has been trampled on.

The owners decided not to allow political and religious discussions. Maybe they truly did have a hidden agenda or maybe it was just a giant pain in the butt to moderate. Heck, maybe they did it just for fun so they could sit back and watch posts like this. The point is, it doesn't matter. They make the rules. I don't like it either. I enjoyed reading the opinions of others on hot topics but I really don't find things to be "scary" now and I don't feel the owners have any obligation to let us post about these topics.


It blows me away how many people took this whole thing so personally. A rule was made and some of you really haven't been able to deal with it months later. I find that to be very scary!

That you would ask the question concerns me. I posted this because I wanted to see if others missed the old CB board. What I learned is I'm not the only one. Will I still pop over to read posts? Yes. But I won't lie. I still miss the good debates we had here. It's okay that we discuss what we liked or didn't like about the old board. This offers a little feedback. In a good way.

I've gone on record as saying I miss the political and religious threads. Its not the "heat and snark" that I miss - its the content. I really enjoyed discussing these topics (some of them anyway - if I didn't like the topic I just didn't read or respond) with people from all over the country and the world; people who weren't necessarily political or religious - at least not enough to seek out those kinds of boards. The appeal was that this isn't a political or religion board - simple a board about one of my favorite places that has members with all types of diverse opinions.

I miss the political threads, too. I really learned a lot, and it was fun as well. But for me, those threads being gone isn't enough for me to not like the CB anymore.

I've seen threads WAY less controversial discussing "policy" on the CB go to heck in a handbasket WAY faster. I'm amazed that this one is still up. Your reply reflects common sense, a process not known to be prevalent in this place.

The board became very vanilla, slow moving, predictable and boring. I don't visit as often but do still enjoy popping in on occasion.

Again, this shows how people can read the same boards and see them very differently.

I don't feel it is an entitlement. As a whole I don't like the idea of entitlements. And it should be the owners right to determine what is allowed. As far as the hidden agenda theory, I kind of find that hard to believe, more like it was drowning out the other subjects. If there was an agenda I don't think the discussions would have gone as long as they did. I think they were fair about it. The moderators do a pretty good job and should be commended.

The problem with most controversial topics is that they typically start out in a civil manner and then disintegrate. The mods need to become babysitters for those few posters that always seem to be involved in a thread going up in flames. Rather than police every thread it is much easier to just not allow certain topics that are sure to cause issues. Political and religions threads seldom end nicely. Emotions are too high for some.

I may not always like what the CB has evolved into but I certainly understand why things had to be handled this way.

Earlier I had mentioned that the original poster had 98 of the last 100 posts to the Community Board. A few people challanged me on why did I look that up.

Anybody can click on a person's name and see links to their last several hundred posts. I am clearly not doing anything wrong; if the webmasters did not want to give all members access to this information they could set certain switches so that nobody, or only webmasters and/or moderators could see that information.

I stand by my opinion that a person who only posts to the Community Board is not really a member of the DisBoards Community. Another quick check shows that there are over 100 forums and subforums. Again, in my opinion I feel that a person should participate in several forums that discuss Disney and not the one main forum that generally does not discuss anything Disney.

And just for kicks, I looked myself up on the Post Search and found that my last 100 posts were spead out to seven forums with only 11 to CB. And there are at least four others I generally check but have not had posts to within my last 100 posts.

Could I as the OP let you in on something. I posted for at least three years with my daughter's screen name. She never used it and I got hooked. She was sick of me always on this site that she changed her password and would not tell me. I than created my own. I will say I stay on the community board more than others but I do go to the resort site. I guess whatever appeals to me I click on. But the biggest love I have is for Disney. I have been going to Disney since it opened. I'm now 43 and I have been their every year of my life. Sometimes twice in a year. I know that place like the back of my hand. The thought of going is the biggest thrill. This is what qualifies me to visit any Disney site I want. I told my family when I die I want my ashes taken to Disney. Maybe that will be my only hope of staying at a deluxe resort. Then I hope to retire to the Big Disney in the sky. My dad past away young. I think because of such wonderful memories Disney will always be close to my heart.To talk about Disney gives me chills. Wierd I realize but what better place in the world is there!

I have complaints about the board as much as anyone but I have to at the idea that any of those political threads were debates at all. I rarely saw any debating going on - it was arguing, mudslinging, exchanging of insults, misinformation, and immaturity. If there was a true debate going on I think it likely would have been allowed. It was nothing more than a moderating nightmare.

Do I wish other things weren't done? Sure, but it's not my board. Do I think the traffic is a little slower? Sure, but at least the politics are gone.

Have you looked up where the poster reads? Is one only a member of the community if one posts? Someone could spend hours here daily reading all the different subforums, trip reports, etc., and feel very connected to the site... and only write within one or two subforums, because they don't feel they have anything to add that hasn't already been said.

By your rationale, somebody could rack up posts by a multitude of and posts, "That looks delicious" posts on the food threads, etc. and be a more "legitimate" member of the community?
