I went to an SCBWI conference this past weekend. One of the speakers was Alex Flinn (Alexandra). She wrote the novel Beastly. It is a modern day version of Beauty and the Beast. It is being released as a major motion picture this summer starring Neil Patrick Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer and Mary-Kate Olsen.
She was very nice and her description of the story was very intriguing. I haven't read it yet, but plan to get a copy. If you like the Beauty and the Beast idea and want to hear the back story in a modern setting, check out this book.
