I melted my Crocs

I ran out of gas the other day. Yep, even idiot lights don't work for me. So I had to go get one of those red tanks to fill my car. Well, while pouring it in the tanks, I spilled a bit.

The bottom of my shoes melted instantly. I quickly got into the grass and wiped my feet. Now on one of my shoes there is no tread.

Learn from my mistake.

I don't get the whole croc fad. First let me tell you, I think Crocs are very ugly, but I was willing to give them a try because at 43 comfort means more then style. When I went to try them on I couldn't believe how uncomfortable and hot they felt. I was thinking of buying them for my August trip to Disney and my wife was saying no they are ugly, but I was willing to wear them if they were as comfortable as some people say.

My toes hurt and my feet were so hot just trying them on in the store. I don't understand the whole comfort angle on these. They are ugly and they make my feet hurt. The whole thing is one big croc.

Do you think you may have had the wrong size? They should have about 0.25" gap all the way around and your toes shouldn't be at the front. If they were too small they would make your feet hot. They are supposed to feel like they are floating on your feet.

I wear mine all the time (even in Winter) and they don't make my feet hot at all.

In actual use, the ones with vents (beach model) are fairly cool. I was surprised myself. I live in Florida, and they aren't too hot for me.

Not sure about what you mean about your feet and toes hurt? They have to be fairly loose.

I know this is a little bit passed when you posted this... but I have extremely flat feet, and I love my crocs. I will admit I used to think they were ugly and didn't want a pair because "everyone" had them, and I am not one to get something just because "everyone" has it. However, one of my friends made me try some on and I fell in love with them! My boyfriend ended up buying me a pair! But they work extremely well for me.
And I know some people who just can't wear crocs... they don't like them. I wish you the best of luck!

I bought some of the "el-cheapo crocs" from Walmart and they were surprisingly comfy. Even to feet that had been in work shoes and been on hard tile floor at work for 7 hours....

To the OP--I don't know if your "melted" croc is still wearable, but be warned...no tread = SLIPPERY. My mom wore a pair of her crocs pretty constantly and wore the tread down. She was walking along and happened past a fountain where water was splattered on the ground. Once the tread bare crocs hit that water, poor mommy slipped and fell. She said she thought she'd hit an oil slick or something! It was THAT slippery.

at the gas prices as high as they are , no longer one could run out !!

sorry to hear about your crocs. honestly, i wonder if there is something with them and the chemistry / something in them that would cause them to melt ? a couple of times, i have gotten a little tiny bit of gas , on hands / clothing when i used to pump the gas and it would overflow. i do not have many overflows these days since it's sooo expensive. anyway the gas had a horrible smell, even after washing with soap a few times. my skin did not melt though ... i wonder what is up with those crocs ?

thankfully, your feet were okay.

i would write the company , as this could possibly be a safety issue. maybe they could identify IF anything is wrong with them and modify future designs. i have not worn these yet ... but i meet a lot of people who wear for casual and swear by them. i can't get used to the design/ idea that they look like a surgical sort of clog or garden clog.

I hear you about the slippery. I have worm my daily since I bought them. I think that was April. I was wearing down the tread on my own before the gas incident. I'm sure by my Disney trip in Sept that I will need a new pair.

To PP who comment about calling the company.
I don't think that would make a difference. Crocs are made from a foam polymer. I doubt anything could be changed to keep gas and foam from causing a chemical reaction.

I would hate to be the reason the company has to put an IDIOT disclaimer on thier product. WARNING: Do not soak Crocs in gasoline.

Of course if you ever do see this on your Crocs tag or box, you will know exactly who they were talking about.

Gasoline is a strong solvent for non-crystalline plastics, so I'm not surprised that it would dissolve Crocs.

Acetone (nail polish remover) will dissolve a Nalgene bottle (in addition to permanent marker ink and several synthetic fabrics).

The styrafoam just basically melts in the gasoline becoming a goo. We used the stuff on brush and camp fires to keep it buringing longer, little did we know its not exactlly enviromentally safe to burn the stuff. ;(

Dang, you beat me to it! I wanted to tell the OP 'hey, wanna know what you just did? You made napalm!'

The day we bought our crocs, DH warned me to be uber careful at gas stations when I was wearing them. As it happens, I only wear them when I'm fixing hot tubs and pools, so I can jump in and out of the water easily.

But yeah. Crocs + gas = crazy flammable goo of doom.

I live in Florida and wear my crocs daily to work (drs office) they are much cooler than sneakers! I tried wearing sneakers the other day and my feet felt suffocated!! Some people dont like the feeling of them without socks, so try that. The only advice I have is, when wearing with socks, remember to take them off when walking outside in the rain! or your socks will get soaked. During summer I wear little footy socks and they are really cooler.
