I may only buy direct from now on

After not buying direct for over a decade, and a strong supporter of buying resale, I may have just done a complete 180 on this thinking…

As I’ve known forever, and read posts about this forever, the convenience of buying direct, is substantial. I’ve ALWAYS supported buying resale as the savings are very substantial and worth whatever the inconvenience. But…

I just bought VGF direct as the incentives were just too good to pass up. I requested and was approved a Dec UY after agreeing on terms with my guide on a few quick phone calls.

Within 1 hour, I received edocs & my new master was loaded into my online account. I’m still shell shocked tbh.

Takeaways from my personal perspective…
1. Dealing with Disney direct is SO much nicer, quicker and better than dealing with brokers.

2. Discussing DVC (which I love doing with anyone & everyone) was absolutely awesome doing so with a CM who was dedicated to giving me the best deal & experience.

3. Not waiting to hear from broker. Not having to deal with brokers passive/aggressively telling me my lowball offers were offensive to seller with no accountability or interest in making my buying experience magical.

4. No waiting for title company to send docs to Disney for recording.

5. No waiting for MS “to get to” entering my contract to set up account after waiting for broker to send it in the first place

6. No waiting for points to be deposited after already waiting for MS “to get to” setting up my account.

7. No ROFR drama or waiting

In short, I basically paid the same, or even less, on my direct contract vs resale (given the current incentives). I’d GLADLY pay up to $3k more buying direct vs resale just for the magical experience not to mention the blue card benefits.

I just might’ve shifted into a “Only buy direct” consumer which I never thought I’d be. Just my .02 for anyone who might be on the fence like I was. I’m so TOTALLY EXCITED to own a direct VGF contract now. My goodness I feel like a kid on Christmas morning!! Literally giddy seeing my new Blue Card in my account ❤️❤️❤️Screenshot 2023-08-27 9.49.55 AM.png

Yep, I 100% agree that buying direct is easier...

That said, it all depends on what the Delta is between direct and resale. Someone buying into SSR or OKW at say $95 per point may have a very different outlook... It comes down to how much is waiting worth it to you and do you really care about VDH/RIV?

Agree 100% on what product one is buying resale. If someone's purchase is $15k+ savings resale vs direct, that is a totally different animal than comparing VGF direct vs VGF resale at present cost. Also, MF's cost for 50 years vs 19 years, and initial cost are major factors. For my current purchase, buying direct vs buying resale at VGF was an absolute no brainer. Now off to add my new banner :)

Agreed, it really is very resort dependent. I'd never buy BCV/BWV or any 2042 resort direct at this point, but for some of the ones with a few more years left on them like Poly, CCV, VGF it makes more sense especially when you add in convenience and benefits.

For RIV, VDH and any resale restricted resorts I'd probably only buy resale if I already had or planned to buy direct points at that resort. This way I can pretty much guarantee full utilization of the points and am not stuck with a random amount of points that is not enough for a room.

New resorts. Sure. 2042, or SSR or another no way unless Disney lowers direct price. As someone that is in the accumulation phase, the less resale buyers the better.

Congratulations! They have me too…I just think it’s worth it over time to have access to it all.

It's the delta. What are the savings for resale in comparison to the effort and the restrictions.

I believe the delta gets wider as more resorts become restricted.

That "convenience," which is over as soon as you get your points, costs a LOT. Not a value add for me. I don't remember the inconvenience when I bought my contracts a dozen years ago. I have direct points too.

Sandi, I'd say that this is also dependent. If you already have enough direct points, adding on via resale won't really matter as you'd already have access with other points to anything that was restricted.

This is such a personal situation dependent matter. For instance, we have 5 direct contracts, so we're pretty much set with anything coming down the road, that said, we stayed at RIV once (a friend invited us to stay with them in the GV) and while it's nice enough, I just don't see the need to stay there that much (not sure why, just isn't my thing) and the TAT not only put us off on buying VDH, it's pushed us into just continuing to stay offsite (which is so much easier at DL).

However, that's just us. We are all different and have different situations, so the new resorts will make a big difference to certain people.

A lot of people use points to book cruises because it's more convenient than renting points out and pay cash.
I'd rather spend the effort and save tons of money. Same with resale Vs direct: I would have never bought in at direct prices.
VGF is an outlier that the difference is not so much and direct points now grant access to all resorts. I can see why that difference might be worth for the certainty of being able to book all resorts in the future.

Yea, be careful saying all that out loud.....
I have had the same opinion for a while and it doesn't always go over well.....
Welcome to the direct side....

For those making future resale purchases...
I believe, the inconvenience of only have a few resort to choice from will get old.

I would never for a millisecond consider a resale purchase of a restricted resort like RIV, as I love having the SSR/OKW 0-7 month “safety valve” when needed, even if I haven’t had to use it very often.

I own both direct and resale. I too would have bought mostly direct if the resorts I wanted had been available and not at an exurbanite price over resale. If it is actively selling or being offered at a special price, I will consider direct in the future.

I find most of resale to be overpriced, but especially the riviera contracts. I'd consider a resale purchase with restrictions, however, not at the price RIV is going for on the resale market.

In essence all the properties are restricted right now when you buy resale, some just have more choices and others have fewer.

We started out with DVC this past winter. We purchased resale (4 contracts) and thought we were done. We had easy transactions, all closed quickly. Then we took the Riviera tour.

We decided to add on there as well but couldn’t bring ourselves to buy resale due to the restrictions. I wanted these points to be good anywhere. So we bought direct and it ruined me. We plan to see what happens at Poly2 but will be adding more direct in the near future. It was SO easy and fast.

I’m choosing to look at the savings we did get buying resale paying for the bulk of our direct contract.
