Last weekend I needed my Disney fix...

So, we planned a movie night. We hadn't had a chance to see Princess & the Frog yet, so we made beignets to eat while we watched. I made them with the recipe from Jazz Kitchen and couldn't pass up the chance to make them shaped like my favorite mouse! :thumbsup2

Here are some pics of my attempt:

They were so delicious and were a perfect addition to a very fun movie night!

Oh yeah, here is the recipe if you want to make them yourself:

Beignets
Yields 5 Dozen

Ingredients

1 package Active Dry Yeast
1-1/2 cups Warm Water
1/2 cup Sugar
1 tsp. Salt
2 Eggs, beaten
1 cup Evaporated Milk (undiluted)
7 cups All Purpose Flour
1/4 cup Soft Shortening
Oil for Frying
Confectioners Powdered Sugar

Method: In a large mixing bowl, sprinkle yeast over water; stir to dissolve. Add sugar, salt, eggs and milk. Blend with blender. Add 4 cups flour; beat smooth. Add shortening and beat in remaining 4 cups flour. Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight. Roll out of floured board to 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 2-1/2 inch squares. Deep fry at 360 degrees for 2-3 minutes until lightly browned on both sides. Drain on towel and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve hot!

We do this once a month when we all sit down and watch a movie(depending on whose is home) Addictive

OMGoodness!!! Those are so freakin' cute!!!!!!!!! My boys favorite thing about staying at POFQ @ WDW is having beignets! My husband has made them here at home a few times, but not Mickey shaped!!! I need to show these to him! Thanks so much for sharing!

What a great idea!

I've got some beignet mix, and a Mickey cookie cutter...gonna have to try this out soon!

Those look so yummy! Had my first beignets ever at Cafe Orleans last week and they were fabulous! Of course, they're not the same without that awesome berry puree sauce they had. I need the recipe for that to go with your beignet recipe and then I'll be one happy lady. :)

I just use some blackberry jam as my "puree". It tastes the same to me and adds that delicious Disneyland touch! :cool1:

Thought about that, but I fear it won't be as good as what they had at Cafe Orleans. That berry puree was my favorite thing of all... yum!

Those look wonderful!! I've never had one but plan on it in July! The food raves on this board have me wanting to try a lot of things next trip!

Ah!! Those are fabulous!! Thanks for the pictures!

I had beignets for the first time in Jan, at Jazz Kitchen in DTD. They were amazing and I noticed they had a beignet mix. I wanted to buy it but it was ~$10 so I decided against it. After I got back I mentioned the mix in one of my posts and a kind DISer informed me that World Market sells the exact same beignet mix for $2.49! It comes in a 28-oz box and the brand is Cafe Du Monde, made in New Orleans. It makes 4 dozen beignets and is so easy to use! You mix 2 cups mix with 7 fl oz water, roll and cut. Fry in 370 degree oil and sprinkle with powdered sugar (I use the Jazz Kitchen method of shaking them in a bag). I also vary it sometimes with granulated sugar and cinnamon instead of powdered sugar.

I am sure the real recipe is excellent but if you ever want something you can make very quickly, spur of the moment, try the mix. It's wonderful and easy. My girls LOVE them and their friends beg for them when they come for sleepovers :goodvibes.

I never thought to use my MM cookie cutter to make Mickeys, so thanks for that idea!! :thumbsup2

ETA: the box says it makes 4 dozen, but it all depends on what size you make. I usually use a 2" circle or square so I get quite a bit more than 4 doz/box. With a Mickey shape, it would probably be fewer.

Oh, thanks for that tidbit! I'll make a stop by there soon. We had some at Jazz Kitchen too and thought they were great but they'd make a nice treat to add to my countdown stuff. lol

LOL! My daughter is dying for me to make them now! Thanks for the recipe. :)
