This is my story. All mine. But I do know how to share (be it Disney magic or otherwise), so with some prodding of my good friends from ANOTHER board (heh. Heh.) I’m going to attempt this trip-writing thing. It may be terrible, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The Cast:

Me…Tara, I’m 19, and I do Disney. Every freaking chance I can. This isn’t that often. Because I’m in college and that means I’m poor. Coffee shop (assistant) manager by early-morning day/ College student by early-evening night. I’m not exactly rolling in the money, but hey, tax returns are nice.
DFi…Steve. He’s 23. has never been to Disney. Sigh. Likes soccer, hockey and basketball, which, due to my oversight (or maybe dislike, hehe) I happened to book our vacation the week of the world cup, NBA finals and NHL finals. Oooo, he’s a prize when his team isn’t winning.
Some others…
A magical CM, Mothers of both sides of the pond, his (un)faithful 2002 Lancer, Kaylie (Dsd5) who is not with us on this trip, oh yes. Alberto. Olly Rock (otherwise known as Olly).

So where do we start? Well, the beginning sounds nice.
It’s all my fault we went to Disney. At least, that’s what Steve told his friends. He had no say in the matter. It’s true, he didn’t. In early February, after I had spent a whole freaking afternoon doing our taxes I decided we were going to go on vacation. That’s because I added up how much we were getting back collectively. And it was a lot. Lets say I could have paid my tuition to my community college for an entire year. New York colleges aren’t cheap kids.
That’s where it began. It just snowballed from there. At first someone said the word Hawaii at work and we said, hey Hawaii sounds good. Yeah, it sounds good. Except I didn’t really want to spend all our money on airfare. Hey, guess what? Flying across the continental US isn’t cheap. Duh. Not to mention that if we left the airport by our house (and, oh, the one that I work at) we wouldn’t get there till the NEXT DAY. Something like 3 plane changes. Ugh. So, I went in pursue of another vacation destination. So fast forward to the next weekend. My totally awesome almost-step-daughter, Kaylie was over at the house and says to me “Can I play on the Mickey mouse site on the computer?”
And it clicked.
(and yes, I let her play)
So I informed Steve that we were going to go to Disneyworld. Yes, in June, before all the little brats here got out of school. He said….

“yeah, okay. I don’t think I’ve ever been there.”

I know I choked on whatever I was drinking because I realized something: in all this time I’ve known him, I’ve always just ASSUMED that he had been to Disneyworld. Until that day, I just figured everyone went. At least once. I mean, who doesn’t take their kid to Disney? There wasn’t a single kid in my town that hadn’t been at least once. I’m so naïve. He said that he didn’t care, but something seemed to bug him. What it was exactly was this:

“yeah we can go there. But what’s the big deal? Couldn’t we just go to Great Escape?” (Great escape is a ‘theme park’ about 30 minutes away from our house. It’s owned by six flags)

I got all fired up and tried to explain that Disney isn’t JUST a theme park. It’s a whole seperate world. But I seem to have problems putting the magic that I feel there into words. I got so frustrated that it wasn’t coming out right that I remember yelling, “YOU’RE GOING SO I DON’T HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHY”
And I booked non-refundable plane tickets. HA. I waved them in his face when he walked in the door from work. We were strapped in now. The rest of the planning followed….Booked at the POP, ADRs, you guys get it.

Let me digress momentarily…
I’ve never planned a vacation. Ever. In my short span of time on this Earth, I’ve never gone on vacation without my mother (obsessive planner). So this is my first attempt. I know at some parts you all are going to start screaming at the computer “OH MY GOD, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!” Kind of like Steve when the team he wants to lose scores. Please keep in mind that even with all my DIS knowledge I’ve acquired, I’m still a newbie vacation planner. In all forms, not just Disney vacations.

Back to the story…
June 13th…it was just 156 days away when I booked. Guess we weren’t eating at the castle. Oh well. I instructed Steve to make sure he put in for his vacation time. Sometime in March we realized that we have a cat, and he’ll probably need to be fed while we’re away. Because we like him and quite possibly would like to have him around after we go on vacation. So my mother says she’ll watch him (I mean, he’ll fit right in with her 3 cats). BUT she wasn’t coming to get him. So I guess we’re driving 45 minutes to bring the cat to the best of the best. That should be fun.
Did you know that those 156 went by really fast? Yeah, they did. It didn’t SEEM like they were gong fast, but in retrospect, oh they did.
So I planned in those days. Around the hours and hours and hours that I spent at work because apparently when Tara announces she’s going on vacation people feel the need to quit/stop showing up. Because I didn’t want to plan my vacation at all. Lets just say I sacrificed sleep for DIS. It was worth every minute, too.

And anyway it was June 12th before I knew it….

Yay, TaraLee!! :cool1: Great start to your trip report. I can't wait to read the upcoming chapters! Go LIME GREEN!

My DH had only been to Disney once...and it was when he was a kid, and of course, he didn't do it RIGHT. But, luckily for him, he married me, and I fixed him!!!

Can't wait to read more...

Great beginning to your TR. I'm subscribing so I can read the rest.

As far as going to WDW when I was a kid... I went ONCE, for part of 1 day. My youth choir went on choir tour when I was in the 8th grade. We left Memphis and stopped each day at a church to perform and spend the night. We made our way to Orlando where we spent a few hours at the MK. Then did the same thing on the way back home.

My parents, unfortunately, didn't believe in going on vacation. Their idea was sending us to our grandparents' in Murray, Kentucky for 2 weeks each summer.

My parents did take us to Opryland in Nashville one weekend. And we made it over to Knoxville for the World's Fair. Oh, and they took us to Florence, Alabama to see where they eloped to and were married.

That's it, though.

Maybe that's why I like to travel so much with my family.

We've taken my DD to WDW twice already and she's only 6. And we're going again in May.

Oh, and last May when we went to WDW, I took my parents. :thumbsup2

Anyway, again, great TR! Looking forward to the rest of it!

Great start :thumbsup2 Can't wait to hear more.

I'm with you, I have a co-worker that has never been to Disney (he's 48!) and he doesn't feel the need to go to another amusement park for kids :confused3

I keep trying to tell him it is NOT a six flags and there is so much more than kid stuff. He can't figure out why I keep going back!

Hard to believe some people just don't get it??

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

YES I want/need more story! :bounce: Great start up, very funny!!! :rotfl2:
Knew you had it in ya! :teeth:

Conrats! :wizard:

Lovin your report! :) I think you're me , but 25 years ago!!!! :hourglass

DH and I started going to Disney with Tax return money, back in the day - when we were in college and engaged. Did tent camping off site! :scared1:

Now we've been married 22 years, :bride: :groom: have 3 DDs (2 are now expert swipers!) and having been going back to Disney ever since the camping trip. We've finally worked our way up to 11 days at the BWI next month!!! :woohoo:

I even understand what you mean about Great Escape. :rotfl2: I was supposed to chaperone a girl scout trip to Great Escape tomorrow, with DD(10). I was not looking forward to this. I can't stand the place except for the wave pool! Lucky :shamrock: me- rain and high wind advisories for the weekend so we are postponed until next Saturday!!!! (I'm so hopin' for a huge storm! Snow would even be acceptable!!!) DD(14) nearly had a coronory when she read about your DFi's reaction to the great escape idea. :crazy2:

When people don't understand how I can be a disney fanatic but not like Great Escape, I try to explain that there is a huge, incredible, phenominal difference between a mere amusement park and DISNEY!

Those six flags parks are what make me afraid of :dancer: reminds me too much of the old dude on the commercials last year!

As for sports nuts we had our honeymoon (In DISUNC's territory) during the Stanley Cup finals. Not everyone spends their honeymoon watching the playoffs. Some couples do this :jumping1:

Well, great report so far, can't wait for part 2.

Lets just say I sacrificed sleep for DIS.

I so know how that goes...

I do that all the time. Isn't it funny how Disney effects time?

Great start to your limey trip report!

I can't believe he wanted to go to Great Escape  :faint: Good thing you came along and saved the poor fellow

Ready for more of your report! :thumbsup2

Awsome story, I'm glad I clicked the link from the secret green club.

I, for one, was as unlucky as Steve because I never vacationed before my husband took me around. He took me to DL (Spring Break) and WDW for our Honeymoon back in 1993 and I was hooked:)

I just didn't get what all the fuss was about until I saw it with my own eyes and now its my favorite place to be.

Great start! Can't wait to read more.

Hey Tara!
I looked and looked everyday for you but especially at Epcot - my DH even got in on it. Everytime we saw a guy with khaki's he'd say "look for the lime" :lmao: I'm sure that people thought we were a little weird! I'm going to start my trip report, too! Great start to yours- can't wait to read more!
Melissa

Can't wait to read more. I'm one of "the group" that can't believe why people think its "odd" to continually go to DW. But maybe we shouldn't try to convince them (other than immediate family members) after all, why let them in on a good thing when they don't really want to know!

Enjoying reading your report ~ Thanx for sharing.
