Okay, these "start" at $3,000 :earboy2: but if you have a family member or friend who is handy with a hammer, saw, & paint they could probably make something similar for a fraction of the cost. Can't you just visualize those beds done with Disney themes...the castle bed with any of the princesses & the ocean bed with Ariel. I was thinking that they could probably be done with those stick-on mural type designs if you don't have the skills to paint the designs.

I found the above link from this newspaper article.

We built our DS an underwater themed bed a couple of years ago, complete with a nice trundle for when he has friends over. It cost us about $700 total including the mattresses, paint and lumber materials. We got the idea from a website that sells fantasy beds for thousands of dollars!

Wow, those beds on both sites are unbelievable!! But I agree that if you're handy they probably wouldn't be too hard to make, at least the ones on the site foxfire posted. The carriage and castle beds on the other websites might be trickier. If someone had the money to spare to indulge in these I could see buying them, but in my house I don't think it would be practical with the way kids' interests change, it's much easier to buy something nice, but plain and dress it up with the bedding, canopies, etc.

ITA-however, we have one son who has loved underwater theming since he was very little. We decorated it and designed the bed in a way that allows the outer shell (looks like a mini sub in an underwater area with fish, an octopus,etc...) to be removed and the bed would still be fine without it. He has used it for a little over 3 years and since he has a double bed with a double trundle underneath he shouldn't outgrow it for a while. :fish:

The fancy beds can be made, you just have to use your imagination and try to get the design planned out on paper first. Most of the fancy cut boards are particle board which is finished off with a sander on the edges and then primed & painted. The reason ours was so much money was because we made it a double bed/trundle. IIRC a single bed & trundle plus materials would have cost us about $450 or so with the mattresses/boxsprings-still not that bad.

In our area we priced out a simple mattress/boxspring and headboard/footboard (no special designs) and they wanted over $500 just for that alone. For a little more we have a really cool bed that he plays in all the time, plus we can remove it and redesign it if he really wanted us to down the road.

Hmm, now if I could only get DH to make me that carriage bed! :cloud9:

Welovedis, can you post a pic online of your bed? I'm curious to see it. Thanks!

Thanks for the links!! I think I will be making the castle from foxfire's post!! It's better than the JCPenney/Ward's fabric covered castle beds for $800!! I really think I can do it too, it's just finding the time!
