I love the self-checkout lanes at Walmart

I lovew them too, but for the opposite reason. I know how to work them, so I get in and get out while others have to sit and wait.

1. They are taking jobs away from people
2. You don't get a discount for checking yourself out

I agree with your husband, especially on #1. The only time I will use it is when I go to my local Kroger early in the morning because that's the only register they have open. And it annoys me every time I have to use it.

2. You don't get a discount for checking yourself out

That's my beef.

If I am doing the work myself, I should get a discount, even if it is only 1-2%.

Locally, they are encouraged by the use of cranky, barely competent, sometimes non-english speaking cashiers.

Unforunately, I use them some times to avoid having to deal with the high quality Wal-Mart & Home Depot personnel.

AND I HATE THOSE ITTY_BITTY PLASTIC PIECE O' CRAP PLASTIC BAGS THEY USE!!!!!!!

I do use the express check out most of the time, but ONLY if all my items have the bar codes and/or stickers on them.

Unmarked item is a hassle getting someone to help you.

herc.

For the most part, I love self-checkout. The ones at BJ's work incredibly well. The ones at Wal-Mart--what a nightmare. I was there the other day buying gift wrap, some cards, bows, and tissue paper. Oh my god. Neither the bows, tissue paper or cards weighed enough to register in the bagging error and it kept telling me to "place item in bag". If I pushed down on the bag then it went over the weight of what the item was expected to be. I swear it took me well over 5 minutes to ring up 10 items. I understand the Home Depot's work the same way and if you are going there to buy small parts, it's bad.

I'm headed to my local wal-mart in about 15 minutes to buy a pack of light bulbs.

(that's all I need...I better not leave with more.)

If you hear of some crazy lady smashing her purse against a self-check-out-register....that would be me.

I have only used them twice but i haven't had problems with them. There was no wait so i went to them and was in and out--i guess i would use them again!

I hate the self-checkout lanes and refuse to use them. If I wanted to be a cashier, I would be. If they were giving me a discount on my order, I'd use them.

The only purpose they serve is saving the company money in hiring and training employees.

LOL!!! Yes, that is SO TRUE!! I have definitely noticed that the regular lanes with a cashier are often faster than the self-checks due to all the problems that arise with them!! ::yes::

Oh man, I avoid those lanes at all cost! Don't get me wrong, I love the concept of them, it's just EVERY time I use one, something goes wrong... a product won't scan, or can't get the right code, etc... so now I just avoid them! LOL

You can hit the "skip bagging" button and it will shut the stupid thing up.

The ones at Kroger are the worst here. They are extremely sensitive and just a PITA

Every time an employee at a store with self checkout lanes tries to steer me towards them, I just ask how much of a discount I'm getting by checking myself out.
That just about sums it up for me, too. I don't want to be forced to use one and I could see a store trying to charge extra for "personal" service the same way some banks do.

i don't mind using self-checkout if i have a limited number of items and if there is no one ahead of me in line.

Locally, they are encouraged by the use of cranky, barely competent, sometimes non-english speaking cashiers.
What our local Kroger does is put the slowest, or newest, employee on the express lane, and only opens two of the three remaining full service lanes no matter how busy it is.

"please remove items from bagging area"
"please put item in bagging area"

over and over and over...I finally start yelling at the machine...IT IS IN THE BAGGING AREA!!!

So glad to hear I'm not the only one!

I had a stack of single tic-tac packs to buy the other day. They were so light they weren't registering and I kept trying to go too fast I guess.

I know I too said "IT IS in the bagging area!!!" more than once - until my dd grabbed my arm and begged me to quit talking to the machine!

Teens can be so sensitive when they're out in public with a crazy parent! ;)

There's not many times you get to hear Dan say piss and crap in one sentence!

 I was a little surprised at that myself!

I have a love/hate relationship with Walmart's SCL's. I love not having to deal with a cashier, but as others have mentioned, you have to have someone help you anyway. If you have anything like a greeting card or package of Koolaid, forget it. I have found that when I get the "please move item barcode over the .... "after I already have, if I push "Skip Bagging" it will let me do that 3 times before it stops until the cashier comes over.

What I don't understand is if she is overriding all these warnings all the time, how much stuff is actually being stolen through these machines? It's like the little boy who cried "Wolf".

:crazy2: I hate Walmart's self-checkouts. They are awful and everytime I use them all of the checkouts are having issues. It takes forever to get any help. Kmart's are aweful too. The only self-checkouts that are worth a crap at Krogers. I don't know if they use different software or what. If there is a problem the employees just override it at their station instead of coming over and wasting a bunch of time. At Kroger they are more convenient, anywhere else they are a pain and I avoid them.

I honestly do believe they use a differnt software and yes in most cases the Kroger Cashier just overrides the problem. I know this stuff b/c my DH is a kroger employee

I luv those things!!!! everytime we go i want 2 checkout @ them, but my mom hates them, mostly b/c she doesn't know how 2 use them, lol!!!!!:Pinkbounc :bounce: :jester:  pirate: ::yes:: :teeth:
