I know many people have problems when they rent, and we have had a few of our own, but our fridge died sometime last night. The fans went, so it is just barley cold. I called, they called back and we now have 2 fridges in our kitchen. The new one, getting cold, and the old one, holding everything until we can swap it all over. They guys were super nice that came, they didn't complain at all when they had to lug it up to the top floor on a Sunday even!

We want to look at houses in a few years, boy will I miss someone else dealing with things like this, leaky faucets, paying the heat and all those other things!

You have an awesome rental manager!

I prefer renting too, sometimes I wish for a place of our own then I start to think of all the stuff I would need to buy for a house.. and all the work involved with upkeep..and what if this breaks?.. and what if.... and what about???

In my perfect world, I would have a ground floor apartment with a patio where I could have a little grill, some lawn chairs and some plants to kill. No stairs to worry abut lugging groceries or my husband's medical supplies. Plenty of sunshine and fresh air just a step out the door... :lovestruc

It could happen, though just the thought of moving again makes my head hurt. :headache:

Sorry but the benefits of not having to share walls far outweigh having a management company fix your faucet.

That sounds very wonderful, except the ground floor part. I like not hearing people above me all the time. I also like being able to leave my windows open all the time. The rest sounds wonderful :cloud9:

I agree, especially as I sit here listening to the dog upstairs bark for the last hour and a half. Good times!

I had to open this thread to see why someone loves renting. I can't say I feel the same way.

We rent a house.

We've always been very blessed with our landlord's as well - and have always been able to 'improve' our (their) home (paint, floors, etc etc) and get reimbursed for it.

I also really like renting. :)

We had always liked renting as well. Then we bought our first house a month ago. There are PITA already with things that we are going to need to take care of but DH feels such pride in paying the mortgage that it far outweighs the downsides. We just made our first mortgage payment online last night and he feels sooo good about it. Just knowing that we are settled is worth it's weight in gold. Prior we had moved every year or less for about 6 years. It feels good to get stuff, decorations etc. and know that next year they will still work!!

you don't have to rent a place where you share walls. you can rent houses. We own, but still say we miss renting, I hate being responsible for the pool that will soon need fixing the roof that I am sure within the nest few years will need replacing, and so on. We have friend that rent a great house with a pool and they don't have any of those worries.

If you live in a well-constructed, well-insulated building, you have the best of both worlds. I'm on the top floor, have been here for more than a year, and have only heard my neighbors a handful of times, all of which when they happened to be in the landing area and basically right outside my door. I have never heard anything else from them, and 2 of the families on my floor have young, very active kids who can make quite a bit of noise (I've heard them out in the courtyard.) So I have all the quiet I want or need, yet didn't have to pay a dime recently when my a/c went out or several months ago when the washing machine broke.

ETA: Also, when one of the office managers saw me struggling to heave a rolltop desk up 3 flights of stairs to my apartment, she yelled at me to stop and paged 2 burly maintenance guys to come carry it up for me. She was horrified that I'd tried to do it myself; having come from a complex where it took days to get anyone to come in to fix a backed-up garbage disposal (which was my first maintenace request in more than 3 years), I assumed that not caring about residents was normal. SO happy to learn otherwise!

I'm on the fence about renting. I'd really like a place of our own, but then I have the same worries. What if something major goes and we don't have the money to repair it.

We rent a single family home though w/ a huge yard, 3 bedrooms, all appliances included, and a laundry room w/ washer and dryer included.

We've done the apartment complex thing and I don't know if I could go back to that. We've rented only single family homes for the last 10 years.

Add me to the list of people who love to rent lol. I rent a house with a fenced acre (great for the dogs and girls) and have a wonderful landlady. The thing I love most is that if something is messing up, it isn't my problem to fix it lol..I dread one day owning a house. We recently had an issue with our AC (animals had gotten under the house and damaged the duct work) and she had it fixed the next morning. We also just found out after getting our last elec bill that the AC was hooked up wrong for heat and they will be out this week to fix it (she was out of town for the holiday so I forgive her lol). When we move next year we plan to rent again...I just wish I could take my landlady with us lol.

We live in a community that is mostly retired people. We have had very few issues with noise, and coming from being an RA in the dorms (being responsible to go tell people to be quiet) it is wonderful! With DF deploying next year it is VERY nice to know that if the stove goes (the dishwasher was brand new when we moved in, and the fridge is now brand new) I don't have to 1) pick one out 2) pay for it and 3) transport it

I too love renting but would love to have the security of ownership.

DD and I are living in our very first single fmaily house that we rent (which I would never be able to afford to buy). We both love it! Our landlords (a couple) are nice and easy to work with. I love having a yard for her to play in. The only thing that would make it better if we could get a dog.

When dd was born we lived in a townhome that we owned with dds dad. After he left it became too much of a financial burden for me to keep, so I had to sell it.

I like the fact that I can call my landlord to fix things when they break but I want the security of knowing dd and I can be in one place for years.

Hoepfully in a few years I will be able to own again but in the meantime dd and I are enjoying renting this home.

I used to love renting too. I was always lucky and rented single family homes and with the exception of one landlord I had great ones.

I have owned from time to time during the years but honestly, I enjoyed having someone else be responsible for the leaky roof or the fridge that went out etc. Sometimes I stress so much over little things. The faucet in the bathroom is leaking, I think the potty needs a new ring around the bottom etc and DH is a great man but a handy man he isn't!

I can understand the plusses of renting- stove dies, someone else gets you a new one, furnace goes, someone else gets you a new one........

We haven't rented since my 20 year old was 2 but it wasn't bad. We are 3 years from having this house paid for though....... THAT is a great feeling!

It is a love/hate relationship.;)

I love the fact my parent's rent an apartment because they do not fix or repair things well.

I have to say, I did hate the lack of privacy. But I loved the freedom to leave the apartment and not worry about it. Plus you have less "stuff" to mess with. That was the best part.

We had to rent for 8 months with the kids and dogs 2yrs ago while we sold our house and found a new one.

I think I want to go either land or condo when the kids are outta here. Have to see....

We always rented houses and it was fine! The only major issue I had with it was not having the freedom to have pets. Several of our homes didn't allow it, but the last few we lived in did. I'm so glad we own our own home, but if we ever had to go back to renting it wouldn't be a problem for us because we have had such a positive experience all around.
