I love credit cards so much!

Need credit card suggestion for our college daughter. She is in an organization that requires fairly substantial spend that is reimbursed. I suggested she might want to sign up for a better earning card and to keep the expenses separate. She has had a Wells Fargo student card for about 18 months with a good credit score. She has also been a AU on one of my cards for years. I am leaning to a CFU. Credit Karma shows she is preapproved for a Blue Cash Everyday. Any other thoughts?

They're both good cards. Is any of her spend in the Discover categories?

If not maybe hold back on that until it makes sense later. BCE is a good earner if she'd use the cash to pay down expenses, but if she might want to start travel points the Everyday card earns MR instead. Then, of course, the CFU is pretty versatile both ways so that'd probably be my first choice if Discover doesn't work right now.

We may be the odd DP. The AF on the Plus posted just a few days before we got the RR anniversary points. The Premier on the other hand was odd. AF posted and no RR posts until the following the month. We got a retention offer on the Premier, so it wasn't an issue.

Speaking of Chase, can someone remind me if they pro-rate AFs if you close the account after 30 days from the AF posting?

For my SW card, the AF posted. Waited and waited for the anniversary points a couple more weeks.

Yes that’s what I’m leaning toward. A good friend in HS sister got in major moped accident in Bermuda on a cruise and had to be mediflighted to FL so I have that in the back of my mind though I know very unlikely
It’s unlikely but clearly within the realm of possibility. I have known a couple people that have had issues out of the country. One’s wife had a stroke in PR and was stuck there for months; another’s husband died in China due to a diabetic reaction. A guided trip I was on is Costa Rica, had one of my fellow travelers slip on wet floor and sustain a head injury. She spend 2 days in the hospital and fortunately was able to rejoin the end of the tour. I always make sure we have a high amount for medivac. Personal insurance and cc will cover most medical costs except medical evacuations are very expensive and generally not covered.

Parts of the CSR coverage includes parents as "immediate family". You're right, the medical part does not though. Do you happen to know if the emergency evacuation does? That section doesn't seem to define immediate family.

Do people think 100K is enough for medical evacuation? I have no idea how much these things cost. When I buy coverage, I like the ones that cover up to 1 million, because in my head, it can't possibly cost more than that?

This sentence in the CSR coverage worries me "The evacuation must be pre-approved by the Benefit Administrator in consultation with a legally licensed Physician". In an emergency, am I really going to have the presence of mind to get it pre-approved?
I found these estimates from 2017 for medical evacuation to nearest adequate facility. This is not to get you back to a US medical facility.

‘• Mexico: $15,000-$20,000
• South America: $100,000
• Germany, France or other developed European nations: $50,000-$100,000
• Russia: $90,000-$150,000 (weather conditions can dramatically increase costs)
• Asia, Australia, and the Middle East: $220,000’

I agree with $1 million but given healthcare today, exceeding that is not impossible.

So you bought direct? (I'm guessing because resales take a while to get approved.) I thought the restrictions were going to apply to resale contracts.

All this chatter about DVC and new restrictions is causing me to experience a serious case of FOMO.
Resale. You just have to get through ROFR by 1/19. Don't need to close by then etc.

Even when outside the U.S.?
Yeah. I just read lots of info somewhere about this very subject and pertaining to cruises. Can’t remember if it was a DCL FB group in on these boards. I honestly have no clue what my personal health does or doesn’t cover. I’m happy taking my chances in combo with the CSR. On the thread I was reading people were calling their insurance and many suprised at the medical evac coverage.

Yep. We left the minimum in each account to waive the fees and then transferred everything out until we could close it. Double check that they haven't changed it, but it was $300 in the savings (or 5k combined in all accounts, but with that interest rate, that wasn't happening after the savings bonus posted.) Checking you can park 1500 min or keep $500 in DD's going each month. We chose to park the 1500 as we had the float at the time.
Thanks!

I think that CFU is a great choice. I advised a co-worker who asked about their college aged child (with similar stats) to look at CFU and they were approved. Having a relationship with Chase could be a good idea AND the 1.5% back is just so simple and a pretty good return.

What am I missing on registering DH for his PNC account? I created a pin number when I applied for the account, and the email said "you will receive a debit pin number if you have not already created one." Just tried to login using the pin number I created, account number, and social and it says it does not recognize it. Any ideas?

Does anybody else enjoy watching their SW flight price go up and down I'm guessing you do @amalone1013 :P I'm glad I struck earlier today on the $115 price as it's back up to $142 and showing only "3 left at that price". I'd love to see the innerworkings of flight pricing. It's gotta be fascinating to know the computer models that are driving these prices up and down daily less than 3 weeks from the flight!

I'm pretty sure CSR would cover hotels using URs. But I'm not too sure about hotels using the hotel chain's own points.

As for other travel insurance, I know there's insurance that will cover timeshare maintenance fees. And also ones that will cover airline award change or redeposit fees. So maybe there are ones that'll cover hotel points. If you wanted to find one, I'd start with the chat feature on Insure My Trip.

The relevant sections for CSR under Trip Cancellation/Interruption:

(page 47):
If any or all of the Covered Trip was paid for using redeemable
Rewards, the Company will reimburse the Insured Person for
Rewards used. The Company’s reimbursement shall equal the
monetary value of the redemption through the Common Carrier,
Tour Operator, Travel Agency, or Travel Supplier up to the Benefit
Amount. If the monetary value of the redemption does not appear
on the Insured Person’s itinerary or redemption confirmation
issued by the Common Carrier, Rewards program manager, Tour
Operator, Travel Agency, or Travel Supplier the Company will
reimburse the Insured Person ($.01) per point redeemed up to
the Insured Person’s Benefit Amount.

Thank you for your reply!
I should have been clear, yes, I think CSR insurance should cover hotels booked with URs. For our upcoming trip I booked the air with URs and Chase said insurance applies to the trip booked with UR points. But they were not clear on the hotels booked with other program points.

I think I have never seen any reservation confirmations booked with points showing the monetary value. I guess it is reasonable, but makes me wonder about using free night certificate. My email confirmation shows "Free" for the cost.

I have used Insure My Trip before, but did not know they have chat feature. Good to know!

BTW, it's good to talk to you again, wanderlust7! :wave2:

^^ good build up and then get the CSR when ready and blow all your points at once!!!

You have to wait for the debit card to arrive. If I remember from my reading, logging in before then may require a call in to unlock your acct.

blasted government shutdown :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:
(I think some of this was in my last update, Beat of Hawaii tends to just update the page)

HAWAII UPDATE

Southwest Hawaii flights are to be cleared for takeoff this month. That according to airline officials. They warned, however, that the federal government shutdown may well impact their obtaining final approval. Approximately 18,000 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees are currently on furlough.

1. We were told that last week, Gary Kelly, CEO, advised employees that ETOPS certification would be completed in January.

2. Many aspects of the FAA have been curtailed during the government shutdown. That, plus Gary’s comment, lead us to believe that new certifications will await reopening of the federal government.

3. Anticipated schedule for Hawaii flights below has just been updated, but will remain flexible pending resolution of the shutdown.

4. In December the first partial test flight took place. That according to FlightAware (their image below), which observed the flight out of Oakland on December 18. The multi-hour flight was undoubtedly the necessary precursor to complete end-to-end testing for Southwest Hawaii flights.

5. The next test flight could happen at any point. We’re waiting for this and will report as soon as it occurs.

6. The FAA is said to have approved Southwest’s ETOPS plans and procedures, and the company is in the final approval phase. Table-top exercises and proving flights across the Pacific, plus staff training, are the last things to be completed.

7. Ground crew in Hawaii is still expected to report to work later in January.

How long ago were you approved? If I remember correctly you have to wait a day or so to be able to create an online account. I did it the same as you tried about 2 days after approval since I created my own PIN and it worked. Otherwise have to wait for the debit/PIN to arrive.
