My dd spent 5 1/2 months in England. For the phone, she got a SIM card in England and bought a UK plan for the time she was there. It was soooooooooooo much cheaper than our phone plans back here LOL. For the length of time she was there, the Verizon international plan would not have been at all cost effective, and neither was using wi-fi only. She did quite a bit of travelling and used her phone a lot for directions etc.
For money, she had an ATM/Debit card (wth is the difference???) from her Cap One 360 account. They didn't charge any extra fees for foreign ATMs. Worked out great. As far as the panic, well, not much I can say there. Most of the time I was pretty ok. Once her phone died when I knew she was alone in London after dark, so I freaked a little, till she got back to her hostel and messaged me. The town she lived in was not a huge city like London, so I wasn't too worried there. She did travel alone a few times, Ireland, other parts of the UK, Berlin, but I managed to not really panic for some reason. It was such an amazing experience for her, and she learned so much about being independent, it was wonderful.
On another note, my first Chase BIZ card, my SW Visa, went to approved status this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now if only I could find a way to get a 50k offer on the regular SW cards!!!!
The SW will sit dormant until the end of the year, while I meet the MSR on DH Hilton Biz that's on it's way (oddly, I have an AMEX envelope that looks like a card in informed delivery today in my name (the name I put on the BIZ AU cards only) but no envelope in his name).
